Therefore, Satyavatī gave birth to Bhārgava Jamadagni, devoted to austerity, self-controlled, and peaceful in nature.
Long ago, due to the exchange of charus between Bhṛgu’s line—the fierce and the Vaiṣṇava—Jamadagni was born from the Vaiṣṇava fire.
Gādhi, son of Kuśika, having obtained Viśvāmitra as his heir, accompanied by the Brahmarṣis, departed, surrounded by the Brāhmaṇas.
That virtuous Satyavati, devoted to truth and righteousness, became known as Kaushiki, and thus this great river began.
The renowned and illustrious river Kaushiki spread far and wide; in the Ikshvaku lineage, there was a king named Suveṇu.
His greatly fortunate daughter was Renuka, also called Kamali; from Kamali, endowed with asceticism and steadfastness, R̥cīka begot Jamadagni, fierce in power.
He, supreme among those who know all knowledge and master of the science of archery, was Rama, destroyer of Kshatriyas, blazing like fire.
Thus, from Aurva's son R̥cīka and Satyavati, the great-minded Jamadagni was born by virtue, foremost among knowers of Brahman; Shunahshepha was the middle son, and Shunashpuccha the youngest.
Vishvamitra, righteous in soul and known as Vishvaratha, was born by the grace of Bhrigu, the enhancer of the Kaushika lineage.
Vishvamitra's son was the sage Shunahshepha, who was assigned as a sacrificial victim in the sacrifice of Harishchandra; since he was given by the gods, he became known as Devarata.
Among the sons of Vishvamitra, Shunahshepha is regarded as the eldest; Madhuchchhanda, Naya, Kritadeva, and Dhruvashtaka are also named.
Kacchapa and Purana are also sons of Vishvamitra; from them arose the many lineages of the great-souled Kaushikas.
Among them are the Parthivas, Devaratas, Yajnavalkyas, Samarshanas, Udumbaras, Udumlanas, Tarakas, and those released by Yama.
The Lohinyas, Renavas, and also the Karishavas are remembered; the Babhravas, Paninas, and those devoted to meditation and recitation as well.
From Shalavati came the Hiranyakshas, Syankritas, and Galavas; also the Devalas, Yamadutas, Shalankayanas, and Bashkalas.
Dadati, Badaras, and others are also descendants of the wise Vishvamitra; many others, born from other sages, are known as the Shoushikas.
The Kaushikas, Oshrumas, and also the Saidavayanas; all these are descendants of the virtuous sage Kaushika.
The son of Drishadvati, as well as Ashtaka from Vishvamitra; and the son of Ashtaka, who is said to belong to the Jahnu lineage.
The sages said: By what characteristic, by what righteousness, by what asceticism or learning, did kings such as Vishvamitra attain Brahminhood?
By what means or lineage did Kshatriyas attain Brahminhood? I wish to know the distinction, whether by asceticism or by giving.
Thus addressed, he spoke these meaningful words: One who, desiring righteousness, performs sacrifice with wealth acquired unjustly, does not obtain the fruit of righteousness.
After explaining this dharma, a person of sinful soul and lowest character gives gifts to the Brahmins for the sake of ostentation among people.
Having performed intense recitation, driven by unchecked greed for wealth, and filled with passion and delusion, he gives gifts at the end for the sake of purification.
The gifts given by such a person, who is engaged in dharma but is cruel and wicked, indeed become fruitless.
Thus, when one acquires wealth through delusion and gives or sacrifices with impure actions, the gift of such a wicked person does not endure.
But one who offers rightfully acquired wealth at holy places, without desire for personal gain, who sacrifices and gives in this way—
He attains the fruit of giving, and that gift brings forth happiness; by giving he obtains enjoyments, and by truth he goes to heaven.
By well-performed austerity, he upholds the worlds; having established himself, that radiant one attains endlessness among the worlds.
Sacrifice is superior to giving, austerity is superior to sacrifice, renunciation is superior to austerity, and knowledge is declared by the wise to be superior to renunciation.
