Seeing him engaged in fierce austerity, Sahasraksha, Purandara, himself eternal, became capable of granting him a son.
Purandara himself ordained that he would become his son; thus, Gadhi, known as Kaushika, was born, the son of Pakaśāsana.
Gadhi's wife was of the Paurukutsa line, and from her Gadhi was born; previously, a most blessed daughter named Satyavati, auspicious, was born. The lord Gadhi gave her to the sage Rcika, son of Kavya.
In her, the Bhargava, descendant of Bhrigu, her husband, begot a son; and for the sake of a son, he also prepared a sacrificial oblation for Gadhi.
Then Sudhriti Rcika, the Bhargava, summoned and said: 'This oblation is to be used by you and your mother, O auspicious one.'
In her will be born a radiant son, a foremost Kshatriya, unconquered by Kshatriyas in battle, a destroyer of Kshatriya heroes.
O blessed one, you too will have a son—steadfast, rich in austerity, peaceful in nature, and a foremost Brahmin; he will be born from this charu.
Having thus spoken to his wife, Ṛcīka, descendant of Bhṛgu, ever devoted to austerities, entered the forest.
Then Gādhi, together with his wife, went to Ṛcīka’s hermitage, under the pretext of a pilgrimage, to see his daughter.
Satyavatī, ever attentive to her husband’s command, joyfully took the two charus of the sage and reported them to her mother.
By divine arrangement, the mother gave her own charu to her daughter; and, unaware, the daughter consumed her mother’s charu.
Then Satyavatī conceived a radiant and fearsome son, destined to bring an end to the kṣatriyas.
Seeing this and discerning it through yoga, Ṛcīka, the foremost of Brahmins, spoke to his beautiful wife.
O gentle one, because of the exchange of charus by your mother, your son will be born cruel in deed and exceedingly fierce.
But your mother will give birth to a son endowed with ascetic power; for I have dedicated all my austerities to that purpose.
Thus addressed by her husband, the noble Satyavatī sought to appease him: 'Let not my son be such; let another, not of the Brahmin class, be so,' she said. The sage replied:
O gentle one, this was not my intention, nor was it yours; but due to the actions of both father and mother, your son will be fierce in deed.
Again, thus addressed, Satyavatī said: 'O sage, if you wish, you could create even worlds—why not a son?'
'O husband, you ought to grant me a son who is peaceful and upright; let such a son be mine, if you so desire, O lord.'
O best of Brahmins, it is not possible for me to alter this in your case; yet, by the power of your austerity, he granted her a favor.
'O beautiful one, I make no distinction between son and grandson; as you have spoken, so it shall be, O gentle lady.'
Therefore, Satyavatī gave birth to Bhārgava Jamadagni, devoted to austerity, self-controlled, and peaceful in nature.
Long ago, due to the exchange of charus between Bhṛgu’s line—the fierce and the Vaiṣṇava—Jamadagni was born from the Vaiṣṇava fire.
Gādhi, son of Kuśika, having obtained Viśvāmitra as his heir, accompanied by the Brahmarṣis, departed, surrounded by the Brāhmaṇas.
That virtuous Satyavati, devoted to truth and righteousness, became known as Kaushiki, and thus this great river began.
The renowned and illustrious river Kaushiki spread far and wide; in the Ikshvaku lineage, there was a king named Suveṇu.
His greatly fortunate daughter was Renuka, also called Kamali; from Kamali, endowed with asceticism and steadfastness, R̥cīka begot Jamadagni, fierce in power.
He, supreme among those who know all knowledge and master of the science of archery, was Rama, destroyer of Kshatriyas, blazing like fire.
Thus, from Aurva's son R̥cīka and Satyavati, the great-minded Jamadagni was born by virtue, foremost among knowers of Brahman; Shunahshepha was the middle son, and Shunashpuccha the youngest.
Vishvamitra, righteous in soul and known as Vishvaratha, was born by the grace of Bhrigu, the enhancer of the Kaushika lineage.
