From Suhotra was born Jahnu, who originated from the womb of Keshika; and then, having returned, Ganga was engaged in the sacrificial rites.
Because of the manifestation of future purpose, she flooded that land; seeing the sacrificial enclosure entirely inundated by Ganga,
Suhotra's son, Varada, angry and with bloodshot eyes, said to Ganga, 'Immediately receive the fruit of your arrogance, O Ganga!'
'All this of yours is now fruitless; I will drink up the water,' he said. Then, seeing that the royal sage had drunk up Ganga,
The great and blessed sages presented Jahnavi as his daughter; and Jahnu took Kaveri, the granddaughter of Yuvanashva, as his wife.
By the curse of Yuvanashva, Ganga was thus produced; and Kaveri, the best of rivers, became Jahnu's blameless wife.
And Jahnu begot a beloved and righteous son named Suhotra through Kaveri; and Ajaka was his son.
Ajaka's heir was Balakashva, renowned and illustrious; and his son was Gaya, virtuous and remembered as Kusha's son.
Kusha had four sons, all possessing the glory of the Vedas: Kushashva, Kushanabha, Amurttarayas, and Vasus.
Kushastamba, the best of kings, performed austerities desiring a son; when a thousand years were complete, he beheld Shatakratu.
Seeing him engaged in fierce austerity, Sahasraksha, Purandara, himself eternal, became capable of granting him a son.
Purandara himself ordained that he would become his son; thus, Gadhi, known as Kaushika, was born, the son of Pakaśāsana.
Gadhi's wife was of the Paurukutsa line, and from her Gadhi was born; previously, a most blessed daughter named Satyavati, auspicious, was born. The lord Gadhi gave her to the sage Rcika, son of Kavya.
In her, the Bhargava, descendant of Bhrigu, her husband, begot a son; and for the sake of a son, he also prepared a sacrificial oblation for Gadhi.
Then Sudhriti Rcika, the Bhargava, summoned and said: 'This oblation is to be used by you and your mother, O auspicious one.'
In her will be born a radiant son, a foremost Kshatriya, unconquered by Kshatriyas in battle, a destroyer of Kshatriya heroes.
O blessed one, you too will have a son—steadfast, rich in austerity, peaceful in nature, and a foremost Brahmin; he will be born from this charu.
Having thus spoken to his wife, Ṛcīka, descendant of Bhṛgu, ever devoted to austerities, entered the forest.
Then Gādhi, together with his wife, went to Ṛcīka’s hermitage, under the pretext of a pilgrimage, to see his daughter.
Satyavatī, ever attentive to her husband’s command, joyfully took the two charus of the sage and reported them to her mother.
By divine arrangement, the mother gave her own charu to her daughter; and, unaware, the daughter consumed her mother’s charu.
Then Satyavatī conceived a radiant and fearsome son, destined to bring an end to the kṣatriyas.
Seeing this and discerning it through yoga, Ṛcīka, the foremost of Brahmins, spoke to his beautiful wife.
O gentle one, because of the exchange of charus by your mother, your son will be born cruel in deed and exceedingly fierce.
But your mother will give birth to a son endowed with ascetic power; for I have dedicated all my austerities to that purpose.
Thus addressed by her husband, the noble Satyavatī sought to appease him: 'Let not my son be such; let another, not of the Brahmin class, be so,' she said. The sage replied:
O gentle one, this was not my intention, nor was it yours; but due to the actions of both father and mother, your son will be fierce in deed.
Again, thus addressed, Satyavatī said: 'O sage, if you wish, you could create even worlds—why not a son?'
'O husband, you ought to grant me a son who is peaceful and upright; let such a son be mine, if you so desire, O lord.'
O best of Brahmins, it is not possible for me to alter this in your case; yet, by the power of your austerity, he granted her a favor.
