कनीयसी तु या तस्य पत्नी परमधर्मिणी। अरिष्टनेमिदुहिता रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ।। २६.
The youngest among his wives, supremely virtuous, was the daughter of Ariṣṭanemi, unmatched in beauty upon the earth.
और्वस्ताभ्यां वरं प्रादात् तपसाराधितः प्रभुः। एका जनिष्यते पुत्रं वंशकर्त्तारमीप्सितम्। षष्टिपुत्रं सहस्राणि द्वितीया जनयिष्यति ।। २६.
Urva, having been worshipped by them through austerity, granted a boon: one wife will bear a single son, desired as the creator of the lineage; the second will give birth to sixty thousand sons.
मुनेस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा केशिनी पुत्रमेककम्। वंशस्य कारणं श्रेष्ठा जग्राह नृपसंसदि ।। २६.
Hearing the sage’s words, Keśinī chose to bear one son, the best, as the cause of the lineage, in the assembly of kings.
षष्टिपुत्रसहस्राणि सुपर्णभगिनी तथा। महात्मनस्तु जग्राह सुमतिः पोषणे नृपः ।। २६.
The sister of Suparṇa, likewise, accepted the nurturing of sixty thousand sons, and the king Sumati undertook their care.
अथ काले गते ज्येष्ठा ज्येष्ठं पुत्रं व्यजायत। असमञ्ज इति ख्यातं काकुत्स्थं सगरात्मजम् ।। २६.
Then, as time passed, the eldest wife gave birth to her eldest son, known as Asamañja, the son of Sagara, of the Kakutstha line.
सुमतिस्त्वपि जज्ञे वै गर्भन्तुम्बं यशस्विनी। षष्टिपुत्रसहस्राणि तुम्बमध्याद्विनिःसृताः ।। २६.
Sumati too gave birth, the illustrious one, to a womb shaped like a jar; from its midst emerged sixty thousand sons.
घृतपूर्णेषु कुम्भेषु तान् गर्भान् न्यदधत्ततः। धात्रीश्चैकैकशः प्रादात् तावतीः पोषणे नृपः ।। २६.
She placed those embryos in jars filled with ghee; the king provided a nurse for each, for their nourishment.
ततो नवसु मासेषु समुत्तस्थुर्यथासुखम्। कुमारास्ते महाभागाः सगरप्रीतिवर्द्धनाः ।। २६.
After nine months, those noble sons arose comfortably, increasing Sagara’s delight.
कालेन महता चैव चौवनं प्रतिपेदिरे। षष्टिपुत्रसहस्राणि तेषामश्वानुसारिणाम् ।। २६.
In due course, those sixty thousand sons, followers of the horse, entered the forest.
स तु ज्येष्ठो नरव्याघ्रः सगरस्यात्मसम्भवः। असमञ्ज इति ख्यातो बर्हिकेतुर्महाबलः ।। २६.
The eldest, a tiger among men, born of Sagara, was known as Asamañja, mighty and bearing the sacrificial crest.
पौराणामहिते युक्तः पित्रा निर्वासितः पुरा। तस्य पुत्रोंऽशुमान्नाम असमञ्जस्य वीर्यवान् ।। २६.
He, though fit for ancient tradition, was expelled by his father; his son, named Aṃśumān, was valorous, born of Asamañja.
तस्य पुत्रस्तु धर्मात्मा दिलीप इति विश्रुतः। दिलीपात्तु महातेजा वीरो जातो भगीरथः ।। २६.
His son was the righteous Dilīpa, renowned; from Dilīpa was born the mighty and heroic Bhagīratha.
येन गङ्गा सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा विमानैरुपशोभिता । ईजाऽनेन समुद्राद्वै दुहितृत्वेन कल्पिता। अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमं श्लोकं पौराणिका जनाः ।। २६.
By whom the best river, Gaṅgā, adorned with celestial vehicles, was brought forth; by his sacrifice, she was conceived as a daughter from the ocean. Here, the Purāṇic people recite this verse.
भगीरथस्तु तां गङ्गामानयामास कर्मभिः । तस्माद्भागीरथी गङ्गा कथ्यते वंशवित्तमैः ।। २६.
Bhagīratha brought Gaṅgā by his deeds; therefore, Gaṅgā is called Bhāgīrathī by those who know the lineage.
भगीरथसुतश्चापि श्रुतो नाम बभूव ह। नाभागस्तस्य दायादो नित्यं धर्मपरायणः ।। २६.
Bhagīratha’s son was named Śruta; Nābhāga, his heir, was always devoted to righteousness.
अम्बरीषः सुतस्तस्य सिन्धुद्वीपस्ततोऽभवत्। एवं वंशपुराणज्ञा गायन्तीति परिश्रुतम् ।। २६.
His son was Ambarīṣa; from him came Sindhudvīpa. Thus, those who know the ancient lineage sing, as is well known.
नाभागेरम्बरीषस्य भुजाभ्यां परिपालिता। बभूव वसुधात्यर्थं तापत्रयविवर्जिता ।। २६.
By the arms of Nābhāga and Ambarīṣa, the earth was well protected, becoming entirely free from the threefold suffering.
अयुतायुः सुतस्तस्य सिन्धुद्वीपस्य वीर्यवान्। अयुतायोस्तु दायाद ऋतुपर्णो महायशाः ।। २६.
The valorous Ayutāyu was the son of Sindhudvīpa; Ayutāyu’s heir was Ṛtuparṇa, of great fame.
दिव्याक्षहृदज्ञोऽसौ राजा नलसखो बली। नलौ द्वाविति विख्यातौ पुराणेषु दृढव्रतौ ।। २६.
He is the king, Nala's friend, mighty, knower of divine dice and hearts; the two Nalas, steadfast in vows, are renowned in the ancient texts.
वीरसेनात्मजश्चैव यश्चेक्ष्वाकुकुलोद्वहः। ऋतुपर्णस्य पुत्रोऽभूत् सर्व्वकामो जनेश्वरः ।। २६.
One is the son of Vīrasena, the other, the foremost of the Ikṣvāku lineage; Ṛtuparṇa's son became the lord of people, fulfilling all desires.
सुदासस्तस्य तनयो राजा हंसमुखोऽभवत्। सुदासस्य सुतः प्रोक्तः सौदासो नाम पार्थिवः ।। २६.
Sudāsa was his son, the king with the face of a swan; Sudāsa's son is known as Saudāsa, the ruler.
ख्यातः कल्माषपादो वै नाम्ना मित्रसहश्च सः । वसिष्ठस्तु महातेजाः क्षेत्रे कल्माषपादके। अश्मकं जनयामास इक्ष्वाकुकुलवृद्धये ।। २६.
He is famed as Kalmāṣapāda by name, and also as Mitrasaha; the great sage Vasiṣṭha, of immense brilliance, begot Aśmaka in the field of Kalmāṣapāda, for the growth of the Ikṣvāku lineage.
अश्मकस्योरकामस्तु मूलकस्तत्सुतोऽभवत्। अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमं मूलकं वै नृपं प्रति ।। २६.
Aśmaka's son was Urakāma, and his son was Mūlaka; here, they cite this story concerning King Mūlaka.
स हि रामभयाद्राजा स्त्रीभिः परिवृतोऽवसत्। विवस्त्रस्त्राणमिच्छन् वै नारीकवचमीश्वरः ।। २६.
That king, out of fear of Rāma, lived surrounded by women; desiring protection, the lord wore women's armor, unclothed.
मूलकस्यापि धर्मात्मा राजा शतरथः स्मृतः। तस्माच्छतरथाज्जज्ञे राजा चैडिविडो बली ।। २६.
Mūlaka's son, remembered as righteous, was King Śataratha; from Śataratha was born the powerful King Vaiḍiviḍa.
आसीत्त्वैडिविडः श्रीमान् कृतशर्मा प्रतापवान्। पुत्रो विश्वमहत्तस्य पुत्रीकस्य व्यजायत ।। २६.
Vaiḍiviḍa was glorious, accomplished, and renowned for his prowess; Viśvamahat, son of Putrīka, was born to him.
दिलीपस्तस्य पुत्रोऽभूत् खट्वाङ्ग इति विश्रुतः। येन स्वर्गादिहागम्य मुहूर्त्तं प्राप्य जीवितम्। त्रयोऽभिसंहिता लोका बुद्ध्या सत्येन चैव हि ।। २६.
Dilīpa was his son, known as Khaṭvāṅga; he, coming from heaven to earth, attained life for a moment, and by wisdom and truth, united the three worlds.
दीर्गबाहुः सुतस्तस्य रघुस्तस्मादजायत। अजः पुत्रो रघोश्चापि तस्माज्जज्ञे स वीर्यवान्। राजा दशरथो नाम इक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनः ।। २६.
His son was Dīrghabāhu, from whom Raghū was born; Aja was Raghū's son, and from him was born the mighty king Daśaratha, delight of the Ikṣvāku lineage.
रामो दाशरथिर्वीरो धर्मज्ञो लोकविश्रुतः। भरतो लक्ष्मणश्चैव शत्रुघ्नश्च महाबलः ।। २६.
Rāma, son of Daśaratha, was a heroic, righteous man, famed in the world; Bharata, Lakṣmaṇa, and the mighty Śatrughna were his brothers.
माधवं लवणं हत्वा गत्वा मधुवनञ्च तत्। शत्रुघ्नेन पुरी तस्य मथुरा सन्निवेशिता ।। २६.
Having slain Mādhava and Lavaṇa, and gone to Madhuvana, Śatrughna established the city of Mathurā there.
