Satyavrata, from childhood, due to the force of future events, harbored greater anger against Vasiṣṭha than Vasiṣṭha himself.
When his father, weeping, abandoned his own son from the kingdom, the sage Vasiṣṭha did not prevent it, for a reason.
The culmination of the marriage mantras is at the seventh step; thus Satyavrata performed them at the seventh step.
Knowing the dharmas, Vasiṣṭha did not wish to recite the mantras; thus, Vasiṣṭha harbored anger in his mind toward Satyavrata.
The venerable Vasiṣṭha, the guru, acted with wisdom at that time; but Satyavrata did not wisely observe the upāṃśu vow.
When he departed, whoever was of great mind in his father's place, for twelve years Indra withheld the rains.
Therefore, now, that initiation—having become weak and manifold on earth—serves as atonement for the family and for oneself.
Then the venerable Vasiṣṭha prevented him, who had been rejected by his father, saying, 'I will consecrate him to the kingdom later.'
But he, strong in resolve, bore the period of initiation for twelve years, while the great-souled Vasiṣṭha had no meat available.
The prince saw the cow that grants all desires; driven by anger, delusion, fatigue, and hunger, he acted thus.
Seeing that he had taken to the conduct of bandits, the best of the strong slew her; he himself, along with the sons of Viśvāmitra, ate the flesh.
When Vasiṣṭha heard of this, he cast him off; and the venerable Vasiṣṭha spoke to that prince.
'Cruel one, O cruel one, let your body be pierced with three iron spikes, unless you are not the lowest of men.'
By failing to please your father, by killing the cow of your teacher, and by eating what is forbidden in exile, your transgression is threefold.
Thus, seeing those three spikes, the great ascetic called him Triśaṅku; from then on, he was known as Triśaṅku.
Viśvāmitra, having returned to provide for his family, then, being pleased, granted a boon to Triśaṅku.
When urged to choose a boon, the prince asked his teacher, for at that time there was a twelve-year drought and fear of famine.
Having consecrated him in his ancestral kingdom, the sage caused him to perform sacrifices; in the sight of the gods and Vasiṣṭha, Kauśika then raised him bodily to heaven.
As Vasiṣṭha watched, it appeared wondrous; and here too, people versed in the Purāṇas recite these two verses.
By the grace of Viśvāmitra, Triśaṅku shines in heaven, together with the gods, through the favor of that wise and mighty one.

His wife, named Satyaratā, born in the Kekaya lineage, bore a son, the sinless Hariścandra.
That king, Hariścandra, is known as the son of Triśaṅku, famed as the performer of the Rājasūya sacrifice and as a universal sovereign.
Hariścandra's son was the mighty Rohita; Harita was the son of Rohita, and Caṃcu Hārīta is said to be his descendant.
Vijaya and Sudeva became the sons of Caṃcu; Vijaya, who conquered all the warrior clans, is thus remembered by that name.
There, Ruruka, the son, was a king skilled in righteousness and wealth; from Ruruka came Hṛtaka as his son, and from him Bāhu was born.
The king, afflicted, was overthrown by the Haihayas and Tāla-jaṅghas, as well as by the Śakas, Yavanas, Kāmbojas, Pāradas, and Pahlavas.
He was not exceedingly righteous, even in the righteous Satya Yuga; Sagara, the son of Bāhu, was born together with the poison, and, reaching Bhṛgu's hermitage, was protected by Turva.
Having obtained the fire weapon from Bhārgava, King Sagara killed the Tāla-jaṅghas along with the Haihayas, after conquering the earth.
The unwavering one expelled the Śakas and Pahlavas from their righteous ways; likewise, the knower of dharma expelled the Kṣatriyas and Pāradas from their proper duties.
