वारि शुश्राव योगेन महोदधिरिवोदये। सोमस्य सोमपश्रेष्ठ धारोर्मिकलिलो महान् ।। २६.
Through yogic power, he heard the sound of water, vast as the ocean at its rise, a great tumult of waves, O foremost of Soma-drinkers.
तस्य पुत्रास्तु निर्द्दग्धास्त्रिभिरूनास्तु राक्षसाः। ततः स राजातिबलो धुन्धुबन्धुनिबर्हणः ।। २६.
His sons, save three, were consumed by the Rākṣasa's fire; then that exceedingly powerful king destroyed Dhundhu's kin.
तस्य वारिमयं वेगमपिबत् स नराधिपः। योगी योगेन वह्निं वा शमयामास वारिणा ।। २६.
That lord of men drank the rushing water, and by yogic power subdued the fire with water, as a yogi would.
निरस्यत्तं महाकायं बलेनोदकराक्षसम्। उत्तङ्कं दर्शयामास कृतकर्म्मा नराधिपः ।। २६.
With his strength, he cast down that great-bodied water-demon, and, his task accomplished, the king presented him to Uttaṅka.
उत्तङ्कश्च वरं प्रादात्तस्मै राज्ञे महात्मने। अदात्तस्याक्षयं वित्तं शत्रुभिश्चाप्यधृष्यताम् ।। २६.
Uttaṅka granted a boon to that great-souled king: inexhaustible wealth and invincibility even against enemies.
धर्म्मे रतिञ्च सततं स्वर्गे वासं तथाक्षयम्। पुत्राणां चाक्षयाँल्लोकान् स्वर्गे ये राक्षसा हताः ।। २६.
He granted him constant delight in righteousness, eternal residence in heaven, and for his sons who were slain by the Rākṣasa, everlasting worlds in heaven.
तस्य पुत्रास्त्रयः शिष्टा दृढाश्वो ज्येष्ठ उच्यते। भद्राश्वः कपिलाश्वश्च कनीयासौ तु तौ स्मृतौ ।। २६.
Of his sons, three remained: the eldest is called Dṛḍhāśva; Bhadrāśva and Kapilāśva are the younger two, so it is remembered.
धौन्धुमारिर्दृढाश्वस्तु हर्यश्वस्तस्य चात्मजः। हर्यश्वस्य निकुम्भोऽभूत् क्षत्रधर्मरतः सदा ।। २६.
Dhundhumāri is Dṛḍhāśva, and his son was Haryaśva; Haryaśva's son was Nikumbha, who was always devoted to the warrior's duty.
संहताश्वो निकुम्भस्य श्रुतो रणविशारदः । कृशाश्वश्चाक्षयाश्वश्च संहताश्च सुतावुभौ ।। २६.
Saṃhatāśva, renowned and skilled in battle, was Nikumbha's son; and Kṛśāśva and Akṣayāśva, both sons of Saṃhatāśva.
तस्य पत्नी हैमवती सतां मतिदृषद्वती। विख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु पुत्रस्तस्याः प्रसेनजित् ।। २६.
His wife, Hemavatī, steadfast in the wisdom of the virtuous, was renowned in the three worlds; her son was Prasenajit.
युवनाश्वः सुतस्तस्य त्रिषु लोकेष्वतिद्युतिः। अत्यन्तधार्मिको गौरी तस्य पत्नी पतिव्रता ।। २६.
His son was Yuvanāśva, whose brilliance surpassed the three worlds; he was supremely righteous, and his wife Gaurī was devoted to her husband.
अभिशस्ता तु सा भर्त्रा नदी सा बाहुदा कृता । तस्यास्तु गौरिकः पुत्र श्चक्रवर्त्ती बभूव ह ।। २६.
But she was cursed by her husband and became the river Bāhudā; her son Gaurika became a universal monarch.
मान्धाता यौवनाश्वो वै त्रैलोक्यविजयी नृपः। अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमौ श्लोकौ पौराणिकी द्विजाः ।। २६.
Māndhātā, the son of Yuvanāśva, was a king who conquered the three worlds; here, too, the learned recite these two ancient verses.
यावत्सूर्य उदयति यावच्च प्रतितिष्ठति। सर्वं तद्यौवनाश्वस्य मान्धातुः क्षेत्रमुच्यते ।। २६.
As far as the sun rises and as far as it sets, all that is said to be the domain of Yuvanāśva's son Māndhātā.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमं श्लोकं वंशविदो जनाः । यौवनाश्वं महात्मानं यज्वान ममितौजसम्। मान्धाता तु तनुर्विष्णोः पुराणज्ञाः प्रजक्षते ।। २६.
Here, too, those who know the lineage recite this verse: Yuvanāśva, the great-souled, powerful sacrificer; and Māndhātā, the ancient knowers declare, was an incarnation of Viṣṇu.
तस्य चैत्ररथी भार्य्या शशबिन्दोः सुताऽभवत्। साध्वी बिन्दुमती नाम रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ।। २६.
His wife was Caitrarathī, daughter of Śaśabindu; she was the virtuous Bindumatī, unmatched in beauty on earth.
पतिव्रता च ज्येष्ठा च भ्रातॄणामयुतस्य सा। तस्यामुत्पादयामास मान्धाता त्रीन् सुतान् प्रभुः ।। २६.
She was devoted to her husband and the eldest among her ten thousand brothers; from her, Māndhātā, the lord, begot three sons.
पुरुकुत्समम्बरीषं मुचुकुन्दञ्च विश्रुतम्। अम्बरीषस्य दायादो युवनाश्वोऽपरः स्मृतः ।। २६.
They were Purukutsa, Ambarīṣa, and the renowned Mucukunda; Ambarīṣa's heir was another Yuvanāśva.
हरितो युवनाश्वस्य हारिताः शूरयः स्मृताः । एते ह्यङ्गिरसः पुत्राः क्षात्रोपेता द्विजातयः ।। २६.
Harita was the son of Yuvanāśva, and the Hāritas are known as heroes; these are sons of Aṅgiras, brāhmaṇas who have taken up the kṣatriya path.
पुरुकुत्सस्य दायादस्त्रसद्दस्युर्महायशाः। नर्मदायां समुत्पन्नः सम्भूतस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। २६.
Purukutsa's heir was Trasaddasyu, of great fame, born on the Narmadā river; Sambhūta was his son.
सम्भूतस्यात्मजः पुत्रो ह्यनरण्यः प्रतापवान्। रावणेन हतो येन त्रिलोकीविजये पुरा ।। २६.
Sambhūta's son was Anaraṇya, mighty in valor; he was slain by Rāvaṇa long ago during the conquest of the three worlds.
त्रसदश्वोऽनरण्यस्य हर्य्यश्वस्तस्य चात्मजः । हर्य्यश्वात्तु दृषद्वत्यां जज्ञे वसुमतो नृपः ।। २६.
Trasadaśva was the son of Anaraṇya, and Haryaśva was his son; from Haryaśva, on the Drṣadvatī river, was born King Vasumat.
तस्य पुत्रोऽभवद्राजा त्रिधन्वा नाम धार्म्मिकः। आसीत् त्रैधन्वनश्चापि विद्वांस्त्रय्यां रणप्रभुः ।। २६.
His son was the righteous king Tridhanvan; and Traidhanvana, learned in the three Vedas, was a master in battle.
तस्य सत्यव्रतो नाम कुमारोऽभून्महाबलः। तेन भार्य्या विदर्भस्य हृता हत्वा दिवौकसः ।। २६.
His son was the mighty prince Satyavrata; he abducted the wife of Vidarbha after slaying the celestial beings.
पाणिग्रहणमन्त्रेषु निष्ठां सम्प्रापितोष्विह। विष्णुवृद्धः सुतस्तस्य विष्णु वृद्धो यतः स्मृतः । एते ह्यङ्गिरसः पुत्राः क्षात्रोपेताः समाश्रिताः ।। २६.
He was excluded from the marriage rites; his son was Viṣṇuvṛddha, called so because he was increased by Viṣṇu; these are sons of Aṅgiras, brāhmaṇas who have taken up the kṣatriya path.
कामाद्बलाच्च मोहाच्च सङ्कर्षणबलेन च। भाविनोऽर्थस्य च बलात् तत्कृतं तेन धीमता ।। २६.
Out of desire, strength, delusion, and the force of Saṅkarṣaṇa, and by the power of destiny, that deed was done by the wise one.
तमधर्म्मेण संयुक्तं पिता त्रयीगुणोऽत्यजत्। अपध्वंसेति बहुशोऽवदत् क्रोधसमन्वितः ।। २६.
His father, endowed with the three Vedic qualities, abandoned him because he was joined with unrighteousness, and repeatedly said in anger, 'Depart!'
पितरं सोऽब्रवीदेकः क्व गच्छामीति वै मुहुः। पिता चैनमथोवाच श्वपाकैः सह वर्त्तय ।। २६.
He repeatedly asked his father, 'Where shall I go?'; and his father replied, 'Live among the outcastes.'
नाहं पुत्रेण पुत्रार्थी त्वयाद्य कुलपांसन। इत्युक्तः स निराक्रामन्नगराद्वचनाद्विभो ।। २६.
I am not one who desires a son through my own son, O stain upon the lineage; thus addressed, he departed from the city at the command of the lord.
न चैनं धारयामास वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः। स तु सत्यव्रतो धीमाञ्छ्वपाकावसथान्तिकम्। पित्रा मुक्तोऽवसद्वीरः पिता चास्य वनं ययौ ।। २६.
The venerable sage Vasiṣṭha did not restrain him; Satyavrata, wise and steadfast, freed by his father, dwelt near the abode of the outcaste, while his father went to the forest.
