एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु ऋषयः पप्रच्छुस्तदनन्तरम् । मानवः स तु सुद्युम्नः स्त्रीभावमगमत् कथम् ।। २३.
Hearing this, the sages then immediately asked: How did that son of Manu, Sudyumna, come to take on the form of a woman?
सूत उवाच।। प्रोवाच वचनं देवी प्रियहेतोः प्रियं प्रिया । स मे ममाश्रमे देव यः पुमान् संप्रवेक्ष्यति। भविष्यति ध्रुवं नारी सा तुल्याप्सरसां शुभा ।। २३.
Sūta said: The goddess, out of love for her beloved, spoke these words: 'O god, in my hermitage, whoever is a man and enters here, he will surely become a woman, beautiful and equal to the celestial nymphs.'
तत्र सर्वाणि भूतानि पिशाचाः पशवश्च ये। स्त्रीभूताः सह रुद्रेण क्रीडन्त्यप्सरसो तथा ।। २३.
There, all beings, including spirits and animals, together with Rudra, became women and played with the celestial nymphs.
उमावनं प्रविष्टस्तु स राजा मृगयां गतः। सह पिशाचैर्भूतैस्तु रुद्रैः स्त्रीभावमास्थितः ।। २३.
The king entered the grove of Umā for hunting, and together with the spirits, beings, and Rudras, he took on the form of a woman.
तस्मात् स राजा सुद्युम्नः स्त्रीभावं लब्धवान् पुनः । महादेवप्रसादाच्च गाणपत्य मवाप्नुयात् ।। २३.
Therefore, that king Sudyumna again obtained a woman's form; but by the grace of Mahādeva, he attained manhood once more.
सूत उवाच।। निसर्गं मनु पुत्राणां विस्तरेण निबोधत। पृषध्रो हिसयित्वा तु गुरोर्गावमभक्षयत् ।। २४.
Sūta said: Now listen in detail to the lineage of Manu's sons. Pṛṣadhra, having slain his guru's cow, ate its flesh.
शापाच्छूद्रत्वमापन्नश्च्यवनस्य महात्मनः। करूषस्य तु कारूषः क्षत्रियो युद्धदुर्मदः ।। २४.
By the curse of the great-souled Cyavana, he became a Śūdra. Kārūṣa, son of Karūṣa, was a Kṣatriya, fierce in battle.
सहस्रक्षत्रियगणविक्रान्तः संबभूव ह। नाभागारिष्टपुत्रस्तु विद्वानासीद्भलन्दनः ।। २४.
He became renowned for his valor among a thousand Kṣatriya clans. Nābhāga's son was the learned Bhalandana.
भलन्दनस्य पुत्रोऽभूत् प्रांशुर्नाम महाबलः। प्रांशोरेकोऽभवत् पुत्रः प्रजानिरिति विश्रुतः ।। २४.
Bhalandana's son was the mighty Prāṃśu; Prāṃśu had a single son, well-known as Prajāni.
प्रजानेरभवत् पुत्रः खनित्रो नाम वीर्यवान्। तस्य पुत्रोऽभवच्छ्रीमान् क्षुपो नाम महायशाः ।। २४.
Prajāni's son was the powerful Khanitra; his son was the illustrious Kṣupa, famed among men.
क्षुपस्य विंशः पुत्रस्तु प्रतिमा न बभूव ह। विंशपुत्रस्तु कल्याणो विविंशो नाम धार्मिकः ।। २४.
Kṣupa's twentieth son was Pratimā, and Pratimā's son was the virtuous Viviṃśu, who was noble.
विविंशपुत्रो धर्मात्मा खनिनेत्रः प्रतापवान्। करन्धमस्तस्य पुत्रस्त्रेतायुगमुखेऽभवत् ।। २४.
Viviṃśu's son was the righteous and mighty Khaninetra; his son was Karandhama, born at the beginning of the Tretā Yuga.
करन्धमसुतश्चापि आविक्षिन्नाम वीर्यवान्। आविक्षितो व्यतिक्रामत् पितरं गुणवत्तया ।। २४.
Karandhama's son was the powerful Āvikṣi; Āvikṣi surpassed his father in virtues.
मरुत्तो नाम धर्मात्मा चक्रवर्त्तिसमो नृपः। संवर्त्तेन दिवं नीतः ससुहृत् सह बान्धवैः ।। २४.
His son was Marutta, righteous and equal to a universal monarch; he was taken to heaven by Saṃvartta, along with his friends and relatives.
विवादोऽत्र महानासीत् संवर्त्तस्य बृहस्पतेः। ऋद्धिं दृष्ट्वा तु यज्ञस्य क्रुद्धस्तस्य बृहस्पतिः ।। २४.
There was a great dispute between Saṃvartta and Bṛhaspati; seeing the prosperity of the sacrifice, Bṛhaspati became angry.
संपर्त्तेन हृते यज्ञे चुकोप सुभृशन्तदा। लोकानां स हि नाशय दैवतैर्हि प्रसादितः ।। २४.
When Saṃvartta took away the sacrifice, Bṛhaspati became greatly enraged; he was pacified by the gods, for he could destroy the worlds.
मरुत्तश्चक्रवर्त्ती स नरिष्यन्तमवाप्तवान्। नरिष्यन्तस्य दायादो राजा दण्डधरो दमः ।। २४.
That universal monarch Marutta had a son named Nariṣyanta; Nariṣyanta's heir was the king Daṇḍadhara, also called Dama.
तस्य पुत्रस्तु विक्रान्तो राजासीद्राष्ट्रवर्द्धनः । सुधृती तस्य पुत्रस्तु नरः सुधृतिनः सुतः ।। २४.
His son was the valiant king Rāṣṭravardhana; his son was Sudhṛti, and Sudhṛti's son was Nara.
केवलस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु बन्धुमान् केवलात्मजः। अथ बन्धुमतः पुत्रो धर्मात्मा वेगवान् नृपः ।। २४.
He alone had a son, who was called Bandhumān, the son of Kevala; and the son of Bandhumān was a righteous and swift king.
बुधो वेगवतः पुत्र स्तृणबिन्दुर्बुधात्मजः। त्रेतायुगमुखे राजा तृतीये संबभूव ह ।। २४.
Budha was the son of Vegavat, and Tṛṇabindu was the son of Budha; at the beginning of the Tretā Yuga, in the third age, he became king.
कन्या तु तस्य द्रविडा माता विश्रवसो हि सा। पुत्रश्चास्य विशालोऽभूद् राजा परमधार्मिकः ।। २४.
His daughter was Draviḍā, who was the mother of Viśravas; and his son was Viśāla, a king of supreme righteousness.
विशालस्य समुत्पन्ना विशाला नयनिर्मिता। विशालस्य सुतो राजा हेमचन्द्रो महाबलः ।। २४.
From Viśāla was born Viśālā, created by his vision; and the son of Viśāla was the mighty king Hemacandra.
सुचन्द्र इति विख्यातो हेमचन्द्रादनन्तरम्। सुचन्द्रतनयो राजा धूम्राश्च इति विश्रुतः ।। २४.
After Hemacandra, Sucandra became renowned; and Sucandra's son, the king, was known as Dhūmrāśva.
धूम्राश्वतनयो विद्वान् सृञ्जयः समपद्यत। सृञ्जयस्य सुतः श्रीमान् सहदेवः प्रतापवान् ।। २४.
Dhūmrāśva's son was the learned Sṛñjaya; and Sṛñjaya's son was the illustrious and powerful Sahadeva.
कृशाश्वः सहदेवस्य पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः। कृशाश्वस्य महातेजाः सोमदत्तः प्रतापवान् ।। २४.
Kṛśāśva, a supremely righteous son, was born to Sahadeva; and Kṛśāśva's son was the mighty and radiant Somadatta.
सोमदत्तस्य राजर्षेः सुतोभूज्जनमेजयः। जनमेजयात्मजश्चैव प्रमतिर्नाम विश्रुतः ।। २४.
Somadatta, the royal sage, had a son named Janamejaya; and Janamejaya's son was the renowned Pramati.
तृणबिन्दुप्रसादेन सर्वे वैशालका नृपाः । दीर्घायुषो महात्मानो वीर्यवन्तः सुधार्मिकाः ।। २४.
By the favor of Tṛṇabindu, all the kings of Vaiśālī were long-lived, great-souled, powerful, and truly righteous.
शर्यातेर्मिथुनं त्वासीदानार्तो नाम विश्रुतः। पुत्रः सुकन्या कन्या न भार्याया च्यवनस्य तु ।। २४.
Śaryāti had twins, of whom the famous son was Ānarta, and the daughter was Sukanyā, who became the wife of Cyavana.
आनार्त्तस्य तु दायादो रेवो नाम्ना तु वीर्यवान्। आनर्त्तो विषयो यस्य पुरी चापि कुशस्थली ।। २४.
Ānarta's heir was the valiant Reva by name; Ānarta was the land whose capital was Kuśasthalī.
रेवस्य रैवतः पुत्रः ककुझी नाम धार्मिकः। ज्येष्ठो भ्रातृशतस्यासीद्राजा प्राप्य कुशस्थलीम् ।। २४.
Reva's son was Raivata, a righteous man named Kakudhmī; he was the eldest among a hundred brothers and became king, obtaining Kuśasthalī.
