इक्ष्वाकुर्नहुषश्चैव धृष्टः शर्यातिरेव च। नरिष्यन्तस्तथा प्रांशु र्नाभागोऽरिष्ट एव च। करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च नवैते मानवाः स्मृताः ।। २३.
Ikṣvāku, Nahuṣa, Dhṛṣṭa, Śaryāti, Nariṣyanta, Prāṃśu, Nābhāga, Ariṣṭa, Karūṣa, and Pṛṣadhra—these nine are remembered as the sons of Manu.
ब्रह्मणा तु मनुः पूर्वं चोदितस्तु निबोधत। स्रष्टुं प्रचक्रमे कामं निष्फलं समवर्त्तत ।। २३.
Formerly, Manu, prompted by Brahmā, began to create; but his desire turned out fruitless.
अथाकरोत्पुत्रकामः परामिष्टिं प्रजापतिः। मित्रावरुणयोरंशे मनुराहुतिमावपत् ।। २३.
Then, desiring a son, Prajapati performed a supreme sacrifice; into the portion of Mitra and Varuna, Manu offered the oblation.
तत्र दिव्याम्बरधरा दिव्याभरणभूषिता। दिव्यसन्नहना चैव इडा जज्ञे इति श्रुतिः ।। २३.
There, adorned with divine garments and decorated with celestial ornaments, and equipped with heavenly armor, Ida was born—so it is declared in the tradition.
तामिलेत्यथ होवाच मनुर्द्दण्डधरः स्मृतः। अनुगच्छामि भद्रन्ते तमिला प्रत्युवाच ह ।। २३.
Then Manu, known as the bearer of the staff, addressed her, saying, 'I will follow you, O blessed one.' But Ida replied to him in return.
धर्म्मयुक्तमिदं वाच्यं पुत्रकामं प्रजापतिम्। मित्रावरुणयोरंशे जातास्मि वदतां वर ।। २३.
'This, O best of speakers, is what should be said in accordance with righteousness: I am born from the portion of Mitra and Varuna, O Prajapati who desires a son.'
तयोः सकशं यास्यामि मा नो धर्मो हतोऽवधीत्। सैवमुक्त्वा पुनर्द्देवी तयोरन्तिकमागमत् ।। २३.
'I will go to them; let not righteousness be destroyed for us.' Having spoken thus, the goddess again went to those two.
गत्वान्तिकं वरारोहा प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् । अंशेऽस्मिन्युवयोर्जाता देवौ किं करवाणि च ।। २३.
Having approached them, the noble lady, with joined palms, spoke: 'O gods, born in your portion, what shall I do?'
मनुनैवाहमुक्तास्मि अनुगच्छस्व मामिति। तथा तु वदतीं साध्वीमिडामाश्रित्य तावुभौ ।। २३.
'I have been told by Manu himself, "Follow me."' Thus, as the virtuous one spoke, both of them took Ida under their protection.
देवौ च मित्रावरुणाविदं वचनमूचतुः । अनेन तव धर्मज्ञे प्रश्रयेण दमेन च ।। २३.
And the two gods, Mitra and Varuna, spoke these words: 'By this humility and self-restraint of yours, O knower of righteousness—'
सत्येन चैव सुश्रोणि प्रीतौ स्वो वरवर्णिनि। आवयोस्त्वं महाभागे ख्यातिं कन्या प्रयास्यसि ।। २३.
'And by truthfulness as well, O lovely-hipped one, and by your own devotion, O beautiful one, you, O greatly fortunate, will attain renown as our daughter.'
सुद्युम्न इति विख्यातस्त्रिषु लोकेषु पूजितः। जगत्प्रियो धर्म्मशीलो मनोर्वंश विवर्द्धनः ।। २३.
'He will be known as Sudyumna, honored in the three worlds, beloved of all, righteous in conduct, and the enhancer of Manu's lineage.'
मानवः स तु सुद्युम्नः स्त्रीभावमगमत् प्रभुः। सा तु देवी वरं लब्ध्वा निवृत्ता पितरं प्रति ।। २३.
That Sudyumna, born of Manu, assumed the form of a woman; and the goddess, having obtained her boon, returned to her father.
बुधेनान्तरमासाद्य मैथुनायोपमन्त्रिता। सोमपुत्राद्बुधाच्चास्या ऐलो जज्ञे पुरूरवाः ।। २३.
Having met Budha, she was invited to union; from Budha, the son of Soma, a son was born to her—Pururavas, of the Aila lineage.
बुधात् सा जनयित्वा तु सुद्युम्नं पुनरागता। सुद्युम्नस्य च दायादास्त्रयः परमधार्म्मिकाः ।। २३.
Having given birth to Sudyumna from Budha, she returned again; and Sudyumna had three heirs, supremely righteous.
उत्कलश्च गयश्चैव विनताश्वस्तथैव च। उत्कलस्योत्कलं राष्ट्रं विनताश्वस्य पश्चिमम् । दिक्षु वातस्य राजर्षेर्गयस्य तु गया पुरी ।। २३.
They were Utkala, Gaya, and also Vinatashva; Utkala's kingdom was Utkala, Vinatashva's was in the west, and Gaya, the royal sage, had the city of Gaya.
प्रविसृष्टे मनौ तस्मिन् प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा दिवाकरः। दशधा तद्दधत् क्षेत्रमकरोत् पृथिवीमिमाम् ।। २३.
When Manu was thus established, the Sun, having created the people, divided this earth into ten regions.
इक्ष्वाकुरेव दायादानन्यान् दश समाप्नुयात्। कन्याभावात्तु सुद्युम्नो नैनं भागमवाप्नुयात् ।। २३.
Ikshvaku alone obtained ten heirs; but because Sudyumna was a woman, he did not obtain that share.
वसिष्ठवचनाच्चासीत् प्रतिष्ठानो महाद्युतिः। प्रतिष्ठा धर्मराजस्य सुद्युम्नस्य महात्मनः ।। २३.
By the instruction of Vasistha, Pratishthana, of great splendor, was established—the city of the righteous king Sudyumna, the great-souled.
तत् पुरूरवसे प्रादाद्राष्ठ्रं प्राप्य महायशाः। मानवेभ्यो महाभागा स्त्रीपुंसोर्लक्षणं प्रति। मानवः स तु सुद्युम्नः स्त्रीभावमगमत् पुनः ।। २३.
That illustrious one gave the kingdom to Pururavas, having attained it; and to the descendants of Manu, the greatly fortunate, regarding the mark of both woman and man—Sudyumna, the son of Manu, again became a woman.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु ऋषयः पप्रच्छुस्तदनन्तरम् । मानवः स तु सुद्युम्नः स्त्रीभावमगमत् कथम् ।। २३.
Hearing this, the sages then immediately asked: How did that son of Manu, Sudyumna, come to take on the form of a woman?
सूत उवाच।। प्रोवाच वचनं देवी प्रियहेतोः प्रियं प्रिया । स मे ममाश्रमे देव यः पुमान् संप्रवेक्ष्यति। भविष्यति ध्रुवं नारी सा तुल्याप्सरसां शुभा ।। २३.
Sūta said: The goddess, out of love for her beloved, spoke these words: 'O god, in my hermitage, whoever is a man and enters here, he will surely become a woman, beautiful and equal to the celestial nymphs.'
तत्र सर्वाणि भूतानि पिशाचाः पशवश्च ये। स्त्रीभूताः सह रुद्रेण क्रीडन्त्यप्सरसो तथा ।। २३.
There, all beings, including spirits and animals, together with Rudra, became women and played with the celestial nymphs.
उमावनं प्रविष्टस्तु स राजा मृगयां गतः। सह पिशाचैर्भूतैस्तु रुद्रैः स्त्रीभावमास्थितः ।। २३.
The king entered the grove of Umā for hunting, and together with the spirits, beings, and Rudras, he took on the form of a woman.
तस्मात् स राजा सुद्युम्नः स्त्रीभावं लब्धवान् पुनः । महादेवप्रसादाच्च गाणपत्य मवाप्नुयात् ।। २३.
Therefore, that king Sudyumna again obtained a woman's form; but by the grace of Mahādeva, he attained manhood once more.
सूत उवाच।। निसर्गं मनु पुत्राणां विस्तरेण निबोधत। पृषध्रो हिसयित्वा तु गुरोर्गावमभक्षयत् ।। २४.
Sūta said: Now listen in detail to the lineage of Manu's sons. Pṛṣadhra, having slain his guru's cow, ate its flesh.
शापाच्छूद्रत्वमापन्नश्च्यवनस्य महात्मनः। करूषस्य तु कारूषः क्षत्रियो युद्धदुर्मदः ।। २४.
By the curse of the great-souled Cyavana, he became a Śūdra. Kārūṣa, son of Karūṣa, was a Kṣatriya, fierce in battle.
सहस्रक्षत्रियगणविक्रान्तः संबभूव ह। नाभागारिष्टपुत्रस्तु विद्वानासीद्भलन्दनः ।। २४.
He became renowned for his valor among a thousand Kṣatriya clans. Nābhāga's son was the learned Bhalandana.
भलन्दनस्य पुत्रोऽभूत् प्रांशुर्नाम महाबलः। प्रांशोरेकोऽभवत् पुत्रः प्रजानिरिति विश्रुतः ।। २४.
Bhalandana's son was the mighty Prāṃśu; Prāṃśu had a single son, well-known as Prajāni.
प्रजानेरभवत् पुत्रः खनित्रो नाम वीर्यवान्। तस्य पुत्रोऽभवच्छ्रीमान् क्षुपो नाम महायशाः ।। २४.
Prajāni's son was the powerful Khanitra; his son was the illustrious Kṣupa, famed among men.
