"Tell me, what should I do?" she asked. Saṃjñā then replied: "I will go, with your blessing, to my father's own house."
"You must remain here in my place, without fear, in this house; these two sons and my daughter of excellent complexion are entrusted to you."
"This must never be revealed to the lord, my husband, by you." Thus instructed, the earth-born woman spoke to Saṃjñā.
"O goddess, from grasping the sky, one never attains the goal; I will follow your instructions. Go, goddess, to your own abode."
Having agreed to this, Saṃjñā, thus addressed by her, went to Tvaṣṭṛ, the ascetic, feeling ashamed.
Her father, seeing her arrive, angrily said to Saṃjñā: "Go to your husband; do not despise the radiant one."
Thus addressed and repeatedly instructed by her father, she dwelt in her father's house for a thousand years.
Again and again commanded to return to her husband, she became a mare, concealing her form, and went to the northern Kurus, where she grazed on grass.
From the second Saṃjñā, let it be considered thus, the Sun begot two sons endowed with the radiance of the Sun.
Both were equal in likeness to the elder Manu; one was Śrutaśravas, wise in righteousness, and the other was Śrutakarman.
Śrutaśravas is Manu, who will be known as Sāvarṇi in the future; Śrutakarman is to be known as the planet Saturn, called Śanaiścara.
He indeed became Manu, known as Sāvarṇi; and Saṃjñā, the earth-born, at that time showed greater affection for her own son.
She showed more affection to him than to her earlier children; Manu accepted all this, but Yama did not accept it.
Often scolded by his stepmother, greatly distressed, out of anger, childishness, and the force of future destiny—
Yama threatened Saṃjñā with his foot; then, out of wrath, Savarṇā, his mother, cursed Yama.
"Because you threatened your father's illustrious wife with your foot, therefore this foot of yours will surely fall off—there is no doubt."
Yama, whose mind was greatly troubled by that curse, together with Manu, who was righteous, reported everything to their father.
Greatly disturbed by fear of the curse and overcome by words of reason, whether from childhood or from delusion, I am worthy of being saved by you.
O lord of the world, best among those who suffer, I have been cursed by my mother; may your favor indeed protect us from this great danger.
Then Vivasvat, thus addressed, spoke to Yama: 'Without doubt, my son, there is a great cause behind this.'
By which anger entered you, who know righteousness and speak the truth; it is not possible to make your mother's words false.
Worms, taking your flesh, will go to the earth; after that, O greatly wise one, you will regain your foot and happiness.
Thus, your mother's words will indeed come true; by the removal of the curse, you too will be protected.
But the Sun said to Saṃjñā: 'For what reason, even though your children are equal, do you show greater affection to one?'
She, wishing to avoid that, did not tell Vivasvat; but he, concentrating himself, saw the truth through the power of yoga.
The blessed lord, wishing to curse her and angry, sought to destroy her; but she told Vivasvat everything as it truly was.
Then, having heard that, Vivasvat, angry, went to Tvaṣṭṛ; and Tvaṣṭṛ, according to custom, honored the blazing one.
Desiring to burn him in his wrath, he gently appeased him: 'This form, endowed with excessive brilliance, does not suit you.'
Unable to endure that, Saṃjñā wanders in the green forest; today you will see her, your own wife, who conducts herself virtuously.
Praiseworthy, endowed with youth, having resorted to yoga, O protector of cows, let it be favorable thus, if the time is deemed proper.
