By her austerity, she gave birth to Manu, the eldest son of Vivasvat; and again she bore the twins, Yama and Yamunā.
That goddess, assuming the form of a mare, went to the land of the Kurus; and from the nostrils of Savitṛ, who had taken the form of a horse, those two were remembered as born.

She, the illustrious one, gave birth in the sky to the Aśvins—Nāsatya and Dasra—both sons of Mārttaṇḍa.

The sages said: Why is Vivasvān called Mārttaṇḍa by the wise? For what reason did she, in the form of a mare, give birth through the nostrils? We wish to know this truth; please explain it to us who ask.
Sūta said: When the egg, long conceived, was split apart by Tvaṣṭṛ, seeing the embryo destroyed, Kaśyapa became distressed out of fear.
When the egg was divided in two, seeing this, he said to Tvaṣṭṛ: 'Surely, this is not the egg; you are Mārttaṇḍa, O sinless one.'
Out of affection, the father said, 'He is not dead in the egg.' Hearing those words, the name was given accordingly.
Because the father said, 'You are Mārttaṇḍa,' when the egg was split in two, therefore Vivasvān is called Mārttaṇḍa by those who know the ancient lore.

Vivasvān, of great fame, was born from Kaśyapa and Dākṣāyaṇī; his wife was the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ, the great goddess of Vivasvān, known as Sureṇu and later as Saṃjñā.
She was the wife of the blessed Mārttaṇḍa, of immense brilliance, but though endowed with beauty and youth, she was not pleased with her husband's form.
For the form of Āditya, Mārttaṇḍa, by his radiance, was restrained among the lineages and did not appear very pleasing.
Out of affection, the father said, 'He is not dead in the egg'; Kaśyapa, out of ignorance and affection, is said to have called him Mārttaṇḍa.
The radiance of Vivasvān was always excessive, by which the son of Kaśyapa caused the three worlds to burn.

Seeing that tranquil form, Vivasvat lost consciousness; unable to endure her own wife, Savarṇā was created again.
That woman, composed of earth, arose from her shadow; with joined palms and devotion, she again addressed Saṃjñā.
"Tell me, what should I do?" she asked. Saṃjñā then replied: "I will go, with your blessing, to my father's own house."
"You must remain here in my place, without fear, in this house; these two sons and my daughter of excellent complexion are entrusted to you."
"This must never be revealed to the lord, my husband, by you." Thus instructed, the earth-born woman spoke to Saṃjñā.
"O goddess, from grasping the sky, one never attains the goal; I will follow your instructions. Go, goddess, to your own abode."
Having agreed to this, Saṃjñā, thus addressed by her, went to Tvaṣṭṛ, the ascetic, feeling ashamed.
Her father, seeing her arrive, angrily said to Saṃjñā: "Go to your husband; do not despise the radiant one."

Again and again commanded to return to her husband, she became a mare, concealing her form, and went to the northern Kurus, where she grazed on grass.

Both were equal in likeness to the elder Manu; one was Śrutaśravas, wise in righteousness, and the other was Śrutakarman.
