ऋषयश्चैवमुक्तास्तु परं हर्षमुपागताः। परं शुश्रूषवो भूयः पप्रच्छुस्तदनन्तरम् ।। २२.
When the sages had been addressed in this way, they became exceedingly joyful; eager to listen further, they questioned again immediately.
ऋषय ऊचुः ।। वंशानामानुपूर्व्येण राज्ञाञ्चामिततेजसाम्। स्थितिञ्चैषां प्रभावञ्च ब्रूहि नः परिपृच्छताम् ।। २२.
The sages said: Tell us, in proper sequence, about the dynasties and the kings of immeasurable energy, their existence and their greatness, as we inquire.
एवमुक्तस्ततः सूतस्तथाऽसौ लोमहर्षणः। शुश्रूषामुत्तराख्याने ऋषीणां वाक्यकोविदः ।। २२.
Thus addressed, the charioteer Lomaharṣaṇa, skilled in the words of the sages, prepared himself to listen to the subsequent narration.
आख्यानकुशलो भूयः परं वाक्यमुवाच ह । ब्रुवतो मे निबोधस्व ऋषिराह यथा मम ।। २२.
Expert in storytelling, he spoke further, saying: 'Hear what the sage told me, just as it was spoken to me.'
वंशानामानुपूर्व्येण राज्ञाञ्चामिततेजसाम्। स्थितिं चैषां प्रभावञ्च ब्रुवतो मे निबेधत ।। २२.
Listen as I recount, in order, the lineages and the status and power of the kings of boundless energy.
वरुणस्य पत्नी सामुद्री शुनोदेवीत्युदाहृता । तस्याः पुत्रौ कलिर्वैद्यः सुता च सुरसुन्दरी ।। २२.
Varuṇa's wife, called Sāmudrī and also known as Śunodevī, bore two sons, Kali and Vaidya, and a daughter, Surasundarī.
कलि पुत्रौ महावीर्यौ जयश्च विजयश्च ह। वैद्यपुत्रौ घृणिश्चैव मुनिश्चैव महाबलौ ।। २२.
Kali's sons, Jay and Vijaya, were of great strength; Vaidya's sons, Ghṛṇi and Muni, were also mighty.
प्रजानामत्तुकामानामन्योन्यस्य प्रभक्षिणौ। भक्षयित्वा तावन्योन्यं विनाशं समवापतुः ।। २२.
Desiring to consume the creatures, those two devoured each other and thus met their destruction.
कलिः सुरायां सञ्जज्ञे तस्य पुत्रो मदः स्मृतः । त्वाष्ट्री हिंसा कलेर्भार्य्या ज्येष्ठा या निकृतिः स्मृता ।। २२.
Kali was born among the gods; his son is known as Mada. Kali's wife was Tvāṣṭrī, whose elder sister, Nikṛti, is remembered as Himsā.
असूतान्यान् कलेः पुत्रांश्चतुरः पुरुषादकान्। नाकं विघ्नं च विख्यातं सद्रमं विधमन्तथा ।। २२.
She gave birth to four other sons of Kali, all man-eaters: Nāka, Vighna, Sadrama, and Vidhama, as they are known.
अशिरस्कस्तयोर्विघ्नो नाकश्चैवाशरीरवान्। सद्रमश्चैक हस्तोऽभूद्विधमश्चैकपात्स्मृतः ।। २२.
Of those, Vighna was headless, Nāka was bodiless, Sadrama had only one hand, and Vidhama is remembered as one-footed.
सद्रमस्य तथा पत्नी तामसी पूतना स्मृता । रेवती विधमस्यापि तयोः पुत्राः सहस्रशः ।। २२.
Sadrama's wife was Tāmasī, known as Pūtanā; Vidhama's wife was Revatī. Their sons numbered in the thousands.
नाकस्य शकुनिः पत्नी विघ्नस्य च अयोमुखी। राक्षसास्तु महाशीर्षाः सन्ध्याद्वयविचारिणः ।। २२.
Nāka's wife was Śakuni, and Vighna's wife was Ayomukhī. The Rakṣasas, with great heads, wandered at twilight.
रेवतीपूतनापुत्रा नैऋता नामतः स्मृताः। ग्रहास्ते राक्षसाः सर्वे बालानान्तु विशेषतः। स्कन्दस्तेषामधिपतिर्ब्रह्मणोऽनुमते प्रभुः ।। २२.
The sons of Revatī and Pūtanā are called Naiṛtas. All those Rakṣasas are known as planets, especially among children. Skanda is their lord, empowered by Brahmā.
बृहस्पतेर्या भगिनी वरस्त्री ब्रह्मचारिणी। योगसिद्धा जगत्कृत्स्नमसक्ता चरते सदा ।। २२.
Bṛhaspati's sister, a noble woman and celibate, accomplished in yoga, always wanders unattached throughout the whole world.
प्रभासस्य तु सा भार्या वसूनामष्टमस्य तु। विश्वकर्मा सुतस्तस्या जातः शिल्पिप्रजापतिः ।। २२.
She was the wife of Prabhāsa, the eighth of the Vasus. Their son was Viśvakarmā, the artisan and progenitor.
त्वष्टा विराजो रूपाणां धर्म्मपौत्र उदारधीः। कर्त्ता शिल्पसहस्राणां त्रिदशानाञ्च वास्तुकृत् ।। २२.
Tvaṣṭā, son of Dharma, wise and radiant, is the creator of thousands of crafts and the architect of the gods.
यः सर्वेषां विमानानि देवतानाञ्चकार ह। मानुषाश्चोपजीवन्ति यस्य शिल्पं महात्मनः ।। २२.
He made all the aerial vehicles for the deities, and humans also live by the skill of this great soul.
प्रह्लादी विश्रुता तस्य त्वष्टुः पत्नी विरोचना। विरोचनस्य भगिनी माता त्रिशिरसस्तु सा ।। २२.
Prahlādī, renowned, was Tvaṣṭā's wife, Virocanā. She was also the sister of Virocana and the mother of Triśiras.
देवाचार्यस्य महतो विश्वकर्मस्य धीमतः। विश्वकर्मात्मजश्चैव विश्वकर्ममयः स्मृतः ।। २२.
The great and wise Viśvakarmā, teacher of the gods, had a son called Viśvakarmamaya, remembered by that name.
सुरेणुरिति विख्याता स्वसा तस्य यवीयसी। त्वाष्ट्री सा सवितुर्भार्य्या पुनः संज्ञेति विश्रुता ।। २२.
She who is renowned as Sureṇu, the younger sister of him, the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ, became the wife of Savitṛ, and is later known as Saṃjñā.
असूत तपसा सा तु मनुं ज्येष्ठं विवस्वतः। यमौ पुनरसूतासौ यमञ्च यमुनाञ्च ह ।। २२.
By her austerity, she gave birth to Manu, the eldest son of Vivasvat; and again she bore the twins, Yama and Yamunā.
सा तु गत्वा कुरून् देवी वडवारूपधारिणी। सवितुश्चाश्वरूपस्य नासिकाभ्यां तु तौ स्मृतौ ।। २२.
That goddess, assuming the form of a mare, went to the land of the Kurus; and from the nostrils of Savitṛ, who had taken the form of a horse, those two were remembered as born.
असूत सा महाभागा त्वन्तरिक्षेऽश्विनौ किल। नासत्यञ्चैव दस्रञ्च मार्त्तण्डस्यात्मजावुभौ ।। २२.
She, the illustrious one, gave birth in the sky to the Aśvins—Nāsatya and Dasra—both sons of Mārttaṇḍa.
ऋषय ऊचुः।। कस्मान्मार्त्तण्ड इत्येष विवस्वानुच्यते बुधैः। किमर्थं साऽश्वरूपा वै नासिकाभ्यामसूयत। एतद्वेदितुमिच्छामस्तत्त्वं विब्रूहि पृच्छताम् ।। २२.
The sages said: Why is Vivasvān called Mārttaṇḍa by the wise? For what reason did she, in the form of a mare, give birth through the nostrils? We wish to know this truth; please explain it to us who ask.
सूत उवाच।। चिरोत्पन्नमतिर्भिन्नमण्डं त्वष्ट्रा विदारितम्। दृष्ट्वा गर्भवधाद्भीतः कश्यपो दुःशितोऽभवत् ।। २२.
Sūta said: When the egg, long conceived, was split apart by Tvaṣṭṛ, seeing the embryo destroyed, Kaśyapa became distressed out of fear.
अण्डे द्विधाकृते त्वण्डं दृष्ट्वा त्वष्टारमब्रवीत्। नैतदण्डं भवान्नूनं मार्त्तण्डस्त्वं भवानघ ।। २२.
When the egg was divided in two, seeing this, he said to Tvaṣṭṛ: 'Surely, this is not the egg; you are Mārttaṇḍa, O sinless one.'
न खल्वयं मृतोऽण्डे च इति स्नेहात् पिताऽब्रवीत्। तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा नामान्वर्थमुदाहरत् ।। २२.
Out of affection, the father said, 'He is not dead in the egg.' Hearing those words, the name was given accordingly.
यन्मार्त्तण्डो भवेत्युक्तः पित्राऽण्डे वै द्विधा कृते। तस्माद्विवस्वान्मार्त्तण्डः पुराणज्ञैर्विभाष्यते ।। २२.
Because the father said, 'You are Mārttaṇḍa,' when the egg was split in two, therefore Vivasvān is called Mārttaṇḍa by those who know the ancient lore.
ततः प्रजाः प्रवक्ष्यामि मार्त्तण्डस्य विवस्वतः। विजज्ञे सवितुः संज्ञाभार्यायान्तु त्रयं पुरा ।। २२.
Now I will tell of the offspring of Mārttaṇḍa, Vivasvān; formerly, three were born from Saṃjñā, the wife of Savitṛ.
