यदेवं विभृतं गर्भं रौद्रं शुक्रं महाप्रभम्। गर्भं त्वं धारयस्वैवमेषा ते दण्डधारणा ।। ११.
Since you have carried this fierce, radiant seed, you must bear the embryo; this shall be your punishment.
स शापरोषाद्रुद्राण्या अन्तर्गर्भो हुताशनः। बहून्वर्षगणान् गर्भं धारयामास वै द्विजाः ।। ११.
Thus, cursed by Rudrāṇī, Fire bore the embryo within for many years, O twice-born ones.
स गङ्गामुपगम्याह श्रूयतां सरिदुत्तमे। सुमहान् परिखेदो मे गर्भधारणकारणात् ।। ११.
He approached Gaṅgā and said, 'Listen, O supreme river, I am greatly afflicted because of bearing the embryo.'
मद्धितार्थमिमं गर्भमतो धारय निम्नगे। मत्प्रसादाच्च खेदो वै मन्दस्तव भविष्यति ।। ११.
'For my sake, bear this embryo, O river; by my favor, your affliction will become slight.'
तथेत्युक्त्वा तदा सा तु सम्प्रहृष्ट महानदी। तं गर्भं धारयामास दह्यमानेन चेतसा ।। ११.
Saying 'so be it,' the great river, delighted, bore the embryo, though her mind was burning.
सापि कृच्छ्रेण महता खिद्यमाना महानदी। कालं प्रकृष्टं सुमहद्घर्भधारणतत्परा ।। ११.
The great river, suffering greatly and enduring for a long time, was devoted to bearing the embryo.
तया परिगतं गर्भं कुक्षौ हिमवतः शुभे। शुभं शरवणं नाम चित्रं पुष्पितपादपम्। तत्र तं व्यसृजद्गर्भं दीप्यमानामिवानलम् ।। ११.
She placed the embryo in the pure womb of Himavat, in the beautiful place called Sharavana, adorned with blossoming trees; there she released the embryo, shining like fire.
रुद्राग्निगङ्गातनयस्तत्र जातोऽरुणप्रभः । आदित्यशतसङ्काशो महातेजाः प्रतापवान् ।। ११.
There was born the son of Rudra, Agni, and Gaṅgā, radiant as the dawn, resembling a hundred suns, possessing great energy and might.
तस्मिञ्जाते महाभागे कुमारे जाह्नवीसुते। विमानयानैराकाशं पतत्रिभिरिवावृतम् ।। ११.
When that illustrious son of Jahnavi was born, the sky was filled with celestial chariots, as if covered by birds.
देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुराकाशे मधुरस्वराः। मुमुचुः पुष्पवर्षञ्च खचराः सिद्धचारणाः ।। ११.
Divine drums resounded sweetly in the sky, and the Siddhas and Charanas, dwelling in the air, showered flowers.
जगुर्गन्धर्व्वमुख्याश्च सर्व्वशस्तत्र तत्र ह। यक्षा विद्याधराः सिद्धाः किन्नराश्चैव सर्वशः ।। ११.
The foremost Gandharvas sang everywhere, and all the Yakshas, Vidyadharas, Siddhas, and Kinnaras likewise.
महानाग सहस्राणि प्रवराश्च पतत्रिणः । उपतस्थुर्महाभागमाग्नेयं शङ्करात्मजम्। प्रभावेण तदा तेन दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः ।। ११.
Thousands of great serpents and excellent birds gathered around the illustrious son of Shiva and Agni; by his radiance, the demons, Danavas, and Rakshasas were subdued.
सह सप्तर्षिभार्याभिरादावे वाग्निसम्भवः। अभिषेकप्रयाताभिर्दृष्टो वर्ज्य त्वरुन्धतीम् ।। ११.
Born from Agni, he was seen at the beginning of the ritual with the wives of the seven sages, except for Arundhati, who had gone for the ablution.
ताभिः स बालार्कनिभो रौद्रः परिवृतः प्रभुः । स्निह्यमानाभिरत्यर्थं स्वकाभिरिव मातृभिः ।। ११.
Surrounded by them, the lord, fierce and radiant like a young sun, was cherished exceedingly by his own mothers.
युगपत्सर्वदेवीर्हि दिदृक्षुर्जाह्नवीसुतः। षप्मुखो व्यसृजच्छ्रीमांस्तासां प्रीत्या महाद्युतिः ।। ११.
Desiring to see all the goddesses at once, the illustrious son of Jahnu, radiant with great splendor, manifested six faces for their pleasure.
श्रीमान् कमलपत्राक्षस्तरुणादित्य सन्निभः। येन जातेन लोकानामाक्षेपस्तेजसा कृतः ।। ११.
He, glorious, lotus-eyed, resembling the rising sun, by whose birth the worlds were overwhelmed by his brilliance.
तेन जातेन महता देवानामसहिष्णवः। स्कन्दिता दानवगणास्तस्मात्स्कन्दः प्रतापवान् ।। ११.
By that great birth, intolerable to the gods, the hosts of Dānavas were scattered; therefore, he is the mighty Skanda.
कृत्तिकाभिस्तु यस्मात् संवर्द्धितः स पुरातनः। कार्त्तिकेय इति ख्यातस्तस्मादसुरसूदनः ।। ११.
Since he was nurtured by the Kṛttikās in ancient times, he became known as Kārttikeya, the slayer of the Asuras.
जृम्भतस्तस्य दैत्यारेर्ज्वालामालाकुलात्तदा। मुखाद्विनिर्गता तस्य स्वशक्तिरपराजिता ।। ११.
As the enemy of the Daityas yawned, then from his mouth, surrounded by a garland of flames, his own invincible power emerged.
क्रीडार्थञ्चैव स्कन्दस्य विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना। गरुडादिति सृष्टौ हि पक्षिणौ हि प्रभद्रकौ ।। ११.
And for Skanda’s sport, the mighty Viṣṇu created the two noble birds, Garuḍa and the son of Aditi.
मयूरः कुक्कुटश्चैव पताका चैव वायुना। यस्य दत्ता सरस्वत्या महावीणा महास्वना। अजः स्वयम्भुवा दत्तो मेषो दत्तश्च शम्भुना ।। ११.
The peacock, the rooster, and the banner were given by Vāyu; the great, resounding vīṇā by Sarasvatī; the ram by Svayambhū; and the sheep by Śambhu.
माया विहरणे विप्रा गिरौ क्रौञ्चे निपातिते। तारके चासुरवरे समुदीर्णे निपातिते ।। ११.
O brāhmaṇas, in the sport of illusion, when the mountain Krauñca was struck down, and when the great Asura Tāraka was raised up and then slain.
सेन्द्रोपेन्द्रैर्महाभागैर्देवरैग्निसुतः प्रभुः । सेनापत्येन दैत्यारिरभिषिक्तः प्रतापवान् ।। ११.
Then, with Indra and Upendra and the illustrious gods, the lord, son of Agni, was anointed as commander of the army, the mighty foe of the Daityas.
देवसेनापतिस्त्वेवं पठ्यते नरनायकः। देवारिस्कन्दनः स्कन्दः सर्वलोकेश्वरः प्रभुः ।। ११.
Thus, he is called the commander of the divine army, the leader of men, Skanda, the destroyer of the enemies of the gods, the lord of all worlds.
प्रमथैर्विविधैर्दवैस्तथा भूत गणैरपि । मातृभिर्विविधाभिश्च विनायकगणैस्तथा ।। ११.
With various Pramathas, Davas, and also with hosts of Bhūtas, with various Mothers and likewise with groups of Vināyakas.
सा त्वपश्यद्विमानानि पतन्ती सा दिवश्च्युता । त्रसरेणुप्रमाणानि तेष्वपश्यच्च्युतान् पितॄन् ।। ११.
She then saw aerial chariots falling, she herself cast down from heaven, and among them she saw her ancestors, fallen, the size of dust motes.
सुसूक्ष्मानपरित्यक्तानग्नीनग्निष्विवाहितान्। त्रायध्वमित्युवाचाथ पतन्ती तानवाक्शिराः ।। ११.
Extremely subtle, abandoned, their fires not tended, like extinguished flames—she, falling, spoke to them with bowed head: 'Protect me!'
तैरुक्ता सा तु माभैषीरित्युक्ताधिष्ठिताभवत्। ततः प्रासादयत्सा वै पितॄंस्तान् दीनया गिरा ।। ११.
Addressed by them, 'Do not fear,' she was thus reassured; then she sought to appease those ancestors with her plaintive words.
ऊचुस्ते पितरः कन्यां भ्रष्टैश्वर्यां व्यतिक्रमात्। भ्रष्टैश्वर्या स्वदोषेण तपसि त्वं शुचिस्मिते ।। ११.
The ancestors said to the maiden, deprived of her prosperity through transgression: 'Deprived of prosperity by your own fault, you must practice austerity, O fair-smiling one.'
यैः क्रियन्ते च कर्म्माणि शरीरैरिह दैवतैः । तैरेव तत्कर्मफलं प्राप्नुवन्तीह देवताः ।। ११.
Whatever acts are performed here by the gods with bodies, by those very acts do the deities obtain their results here.
