षष्टिशतसहस्राणि वर्षाणान्तु स रावणः । देवतानां ऋषीणाञ्च घोरं कृत्वा प्रजागरम् ।। ९.
For sixty thousand years, Rāvaṇa, having caused terrible wakefulness among gods and sages, endured.
त्रेतायुगे चतुर्विंशे रावणस्तपसः क्षयात्। रामं दाशरथिं प्राप्य सगणः क्षयमीयिवान् ।। ९.
In the twenty-fourth Tretā Yuga, when his ascetic power was exhausted, Rāvaṇa, along with his followers, met his end at the hands of Rāma, son of Daśaratha.
महोदयः प्रहस्तश्च महापांशुखरस्तथा। पुष्पोत्कटायाः पुत्रास्ते कन्या कुम्भीनसी तथा ।। ९.
Mahodaya, Prahasta, and Mahāpāṃśukhara, as well as the sons of Puṣpotkaṭā; and Kumbhīnasī is her daughter.
त्रिशिरा दूषणश्चैव विद्युज्जिह्वश्च राक्षसः। कन्या ह्यसलिका चैव वाकायाः प्रसवाः स्मृताः ।। ९.
Triśirā, Dūṣaṇa, and Vidyujjihva are rākṣasas; and Asalikā is the daughter of Vākā—these are remembered as her offspring.
इत्येते क्रूरकर्माणः पौलस्त्या राक्षसा दश। दारुणाबिजनाः सर्वे देवैरपि दुरासदाः ।। ९.
Thus, these ten rākṣasas born of Paulastya, fierce in their deeds, are all of dreadful lineage and difficult even for the gods to withstand.
सर्वे लब्धवराश्चैव पुत्रपौत्रसमन्विताः। यक्षाणाञ्चैव सर्वेषां पौलस्त्या ये च राक्षसाः ।। ९.
All are endowed with boons, accompanied by sons and grandsons; and all the rākṣasas descended from Paulastya are counted among the yakṣas as well.
आगस्त्यवैश्वामित्राणां क्रूराणां ब्रह्मरक्षसाम्। वेदाध्ययनशीलानां तपोव्रतनिषेविणाम् ।। ९.
Among them are the cruel brahmarākṣasas of Agastya and Viśvāmitra, who are devoted to Vedic study and the observance of austerities and vows.
तेषामैडविडो राजा पौलस्त्यः सव्यपिङ्गलः। इतरे वै यज्ञमुखास्तेन रक्षोगणास्त्रयः ।। ९.
Among them, the king Iḍaviḍa, a Paulastya, is Savyapiṅgala; the others are Yajñamukha, and thus there are three groups of rākṣasas.
यातु धाना ब्रह्मधाना वार्त्ताश्चैव दिवाचराः । निशाचरगणास्तेषां चत्वारः कविभिः स्मृताः ।। ९.
Yātudhānas, Brahmadhānas, Vārttās, and those who roam by day; among them, four groups of night-dwellers are remembered by the sages.
पौलस्त्या नैऋताश्चैव आगत्स्याः कौशिकास्तथा। इत्येताः सप्त तेषां वै जातयो राक्षसाः स्मृताः ।। ९.
Paulastyas, Naiṛtas, descendants of Agastya, and Kauśikas—these seven are remembered as the lineages of rākṣasas among them.
तेषां रूपं प्रवक्ष्यामि स्वभावेन व्यवस्थितम्। वृत्ताक्षाः पिङ्गलाश्चैव महाकाया महोदराः ।। ९.
I will describe their appearance, as determined by their nature: they have round eyes, are tawny, possess great bodies and large bellies.
अष्टदंष्ट्रा शङ्कुकर्णा ऊर्द्ध्वरोमाण एव च। आकर्णदारितास्याश्च मुञ्जधूमोर्द्ध्वमूर्द्धजाः ।। ९.
They have eight fangs, conch-shaped ears, hair standing upright, mouths torn up to the ears, and tufts of hair rising like munja grass and smoke.
स्थूलशीर्षाः सिताभाश्च ह्रस्वकाश्च प्रवाहुकाः। ताम्रास्या लम्बजिह्वौष्ठा लम्बभूस्थूलनासिकाः ।। ९.
They have large heads, pale complexions, short stature, and long arms; copper-colored mouths, hanging tongues and lips, drooping cheeks, and thick noses.
नीलाङ्गा लोहितग्रीवा गम्भीराक्षा विबीषणाः । महाघोरस्वराश्चैव विकटा बद्धपिण्डिकाः ।। ९.
With dark limbs, red necks, deep-set eyes, and terrifying appearance; their voices are exceedingly dreadful, they are misshapen, and their thighs are bound together.
स्थूलाश्च तुङ्गनासाश्च शिलासंहनना दृढाः। दारुणाभिजनाः क्रूराः प्रायशः क्लिष्टकर्मिणः ।। ९.
They are thick-bodied, have prominent noses, strong as rocks, of fierce lineage, cruel, and mostly engaged in harsh deeds.
सकुण्डलाङ्गदापीडा मुकुटोष्णीषधारिणः। विचित्र वस्त्राभरणाश्चित्रस्रगनुलेपनाः ।। ९.
They wear earrings, armlets, diadems, and turbans; their garments and ornaments are varied, and they adorn themselves with diverse garlands and ointments.
अन्नादाः पिशितादाश्च पुरुषादाश्च ते स्मृताः। इत्येतद्रूपसाधर्म्यं राक्षसानां बुधैः स्मृतम्। न समस्तबलं बुद्धं यतो मायाकृतं हि तत् ।। ९.
They are known as eaters of food, flesh, and even humans; such is the form and nature of rākṣasas as remembered by the wise. Yet their full strength is not known, for it is shaped by illusion.
पुलहस्य मृगाः पुत्राः सर्वे व्यालाश्च दंष्ट्रिणः । भूताः पिशाचाः सर्पाश्च भ्रमरा हस्तिनस्तथा ।। ९.
The sons of Pulaha are all wild beasts and fanged creatures; spirits, piśācas, serpents, bees, and elephants as well.
वानराः किन्नराश्चैव यमकिम्पुरुषास्तथा। येऽन्ये चैव परिक्रान्ता मायाक्रोधवशानुगाः ।। ९.
Vānaras, kinnaras, yama-kimpuruṣas, and others who wander about, all are subject to illusion and anger.
अनपत्यः क्रतुस्तस्मिन् स्मृतो वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे। न तस्य पुत्रः पौत्रो वा तेजः संक्षिप्य वा स्थितः ।। ९.
Kratu is remembered as childless in the interval of Vaivasvata; he has neither son nor grandson, and his energy remains diminished.
अत्रेर्वंशं प्रवक्ष्यामि तृतीयस्य प्रजापतेः। तस्य पत्न्यश्च सुन्दर्यो दशैवासन्पतिव्रताः ।। ९.
I shall now recount the lineage of Atri, the third among the progenitors; he had ten beautiful wives, all devoted to their husband.
भद्राश्वस्य घृताच्यां वै दशाप्सरसि सूनवः। भद्रा शूद्रा च मद्रा च शलदा मलदा तथा ।। ९.
From Ghritachi, the apsaras, Bhadrashva had ten sons: Bhadra, Shudra, Madra, Shalada, Malada,
वेला खला च सप्तैता या च गोचपला स्मृता । तथा मानरसा चैव रत्नकृटा च ता दश ।। ९.
Vela, Khala—these seven—and also the one known as Gocapala, as well as Manarasa and Ratnakrita; these are the ten.
आत्रेयवंशकृत्तासां भर्त्ता नाम्ना प्रभाकरः। भद्रायां जनयामास सोमं पुत्रं यशस्विनम् ।। ९.
Their husband, named Prabhakara, was the founder of the Atreya lineage; from Bhadra, he begot Soma, a renowned son.
स्वर्भानुना हते सूर्ये पतमानो दिवो महीम्। तमोऽभिभूते लोकेऽस्मिन् प्रभा येन प्रवर्त्तिता ।। ९.
When the sun was struck down by Svarbhanu and was falling from the sky to the earth, as darkness overtook this world, it was he who set the light in motion.
स्वस्ति तेऽस्त्विति चोक्तः स पतन्निह दिवाकरः। ब्रह्मर्षेर्वचनात्तस्य न पपात दिवो महीम् ।। ९.
As he was falling, the sun was addressed, 'May well-being be yours'; by the words of the Brahmarshi, he did not fall from the sky to the earth.
अत्रिश्रेष्ठानि गोत्राणि यश्चकार महातपाः । यज्ञेष्वत्रिघनश्चैव सुरैर्यश्च प्रवर्त्तितः ।। ९.
That great ascetic Atri established the foremost lineages; and in sacrifices, he was called Atrighana, and was set in motion by the gods.
स तास्वजनयत् पुत्रानात्मतुल्याननामकान्। दश तास्वेव महता तपसा भावितप्रभा ।। ९.
He begot sons among them, equal to himself and bearing his name; ten of them, indeed, endowed with great austerity and radiant power.
स्वस्त्यात्रेया इति ख्याता ऋषयो वेदपारगाः । तेषां विख्यातयशसौ ब्रह्मिष्ठौ सुमहौजसौ ।। ९.
Known as the Svastyatreyas, these sages were accomplished in the Vedas; among them, two were famed for their glory, devoted to Brahman and of immense energy.
दत्तात्रेयस्तस्य ज्येष्ठो दुर्वासास्तस्य चानुजः । यवीयसी सुता तस्या मबला ब्रह्मवादिनी। अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमं श्लोकं पौराणिकाः पुरा ।। ९.
Of these, Dattatreya was the eldest, and Durvasa was his younger brother; his youngest child was a daughter, Ambala, learned in the Brahman; here too the ancient narrators recite this verse.
