पश्चिमायां दिशि तथा रजसः पुत्रमच्युतम्। केतुमन्तं महात्मानं राजानं सोऽभ्यषेचयत् ।। ९.
In the western direction likewise, he anointed his son, the great-souled Ketumanta, as king.
मनुष्याणामधिपतिं चक्रे चैव सुतं मनुम्। तैरियं पृथिवी सर्वा सप्तद्वीपा सपत्तना । यथाप्रदेशमद्यापि धर्मेण परिपाल्यते ।। ९.
He made Manu, his son, lord of mankind; by them, the entire earth with its seven continents and cities is still governed according to its regions by righteousness.
स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे पूर्वं ब्रह्मणा तेऽभिषेचिताः। नृपा ह्येतेऽभिषिच्यन्ते मनवो ये भवन्ति वै ।। ९.
In the previous interval of Svāyambhuva, these were anointed by Brahmā; indeed, those who become Manus are anointed as kings.
मन्वन्तरेष्वतीतेषु गता ह्येतेषु पार्थिवाः। एवमन्येऽभिषिच्यन्ते प्राप्ते मन्वन्तरे पुनः। अतीतानागताः सर्वे स्मृता मन्वन्तरेश्वराः ।। ९.
In past Manvantaras, these kings have departed; likewise, others are anointed when a new Manvantara arrives; all past and future rulers are remembered as lords of the Manvantaras.
राजसूयेऽभिषिक्तश्च पृथुरेभिर्नरोत्तमैः। वेददृष्टेन विधिना कृतो राजा प्रतापवान् ।। ९.
Pṛthu, anointed at the Rājasūya by these foremost men, was made king, powerful, according to the rite seen in the Vedas.
एतानुत्पाद्य पुत्रांस्तु प्रजासन्तानकारणात् । पुनरेव महाभागः प्रजानां पतिरीश्वरः ।। ९.
Having produced these sons for the purpose of continuing the people, the greatly fortunate lord again became master of the beings.
कश्यपो गोत्रकामस्तु चचार परमं तपः । पुत्रौ गोत्रकरौ मह्यं भवेतामित्यचिन्तयत् ।। ९.
Kaśyapa, desiring a lineage, undertook supreme austerity, thinking, 'May I have two sons who will establish a lineage for me.'
तस्य प्रध्यायमानस्य कश्यपस्य महात्मनः। ब्रह्मणोंऽशौ सुतौ पश्चात् प्रादुर्भूतौ महौजसौ ।। ९.
As Kaśyapa, the great-souled, was meditating, two sons, portions of Brahmā, endowed with great energy, appeared afterwards.
वत्सारश्चासितश्चैव तावुभौ ब्रह्मवादिनौ। वत्सारान्निध्रुवो जज्ञे रैभ्यश्च स महायशाः ।। ९.
Vatsāra and Asita, both speakers of Brahman, were born; from Vatsāra came Nidhruva, and from Raibhya, the greatly renowned.
रैभ्यस्य रैभ्या विज्ञेया निध्रुवस्य निबोधत। च्यवनस्य सुकन्यायां सुमेधाः समपद्यत ।। ९.
From Raibhya, the Raibhya lineage should be known; from Nidhruva, listen: Sumedha was born to Cyavana and Sukanyā.
निध्रुवस्य तु या पत्नी माता वै कुण्डपायिनाम्। असितस्यैकपर्णायां ब्रह्मिष्ठः समपद्यत ।। ९.
The wife of Nidhruva was the mother of the Kuṇḍapāyins; from Asita and Ekaparṇā, a Brahmin of highest excellence was born.
शाण्डिल्यानां वचः श्रुत्वा देवलः सुमहायशाः। निध्रुवाः शाण्डिल्या रैभ्यास्त्रयः पश्चात्तु कश्यपाः ।। ९.
Hearing the words of the Śāṇḍilyas, Devala, of great fame, and the Nidhruvas, Śāṇḍilyas, Raibhyas, and later the Kaśyapas.
वरप्रभृतयो देवा देवलस्य प्रजास्त्विमाः। चतुर्युगे त्वतिक्रान्ते मनोर्ह्येकादशे प्रजाः। अथावशिष्टे तस्मिस्तु द्वापरे सम्प्रवर्तते ।। ९.
The gods beginning with Vara are the progeny of Devala; when the four ages have passed, in the eleventh Manu, the progeny remain, and in the Dvāpara, they continue.
मानसस्य चरिष्यन्तस्तस्य पुत्रो दमः किल। मानसस्तस्य दायादस्तृणबिन्दुरिति श्रुतः ।। ९.
Of Mānas, while he was living, his son Dama is said to be; Mānas, his heir, is known as Tṛṇabindu.
त्रेतायुगमुखे राजा तृतीये सम्बभूव ह। तस्य कन्या त्विडविडा रूपेणाप्रतिमाभवत्। पुलस्त्याय स राजर्षिस्तां कन्यां प्रत्यपादयत् ।। ९.
At the beginning of the Tretā Yuga, in the third age, a king was born; his daughter, Tviḍaviḍā, was unmatched in beauty. That royal sage gave his daughter to Pulastya.
ऋषिरिडविडायान्तु विश्रवाः समपद्यत। तस्य पत्न्यश्चतस्रस्तु पौलस्त्यकुलवर्द्धनाः ।। ९.
Viśravāḥ became the husband of Ṛṣi Tviḍaviḍā; he had four wives who increased the lineage of the Paulastyas.
बृहस्पतेर्बृहत्कीर्त्तिर्देवाचार्यस्य कीर्त्तितः । कन्यां तस्योपयेमे स नाम्ना वै देववर्णिनीम् ।। ९.
Bṛhaspati, the renowned preceptor of the gods, is celebrated; he married a maiden named Devavarṇinī.
पुष्पोत्ककटाञ्च वाकाञ्च सुते माल्यवतः स्थितौ। कैकसीं मालिनः कन्यां तासान्तु श्रृणुत प्रजाः ।। ९.
Puṣpotkakaṭā and Vākā were the two sons of Mālyavat; Kaikasī was the daughter of Mālin. Now listen to the offspring of these women.
ज्येष्ठं वैश्रवणं तस्य सुषुवे देववर्णिनी। दिव्येन विधिना युक्तमार्षेणैव श्रुतेन च। राक्षसेन च रूपेण आसुरेण बलेन च ।। ९.
Devavarṇinī bore the eldest, Vaiśravaṇa, endowed with divine qualities, in accordance with sacred law and tradition, possessing the form of a Rākṣasa and the strength of an Asura.
त्रिपादं सुमहाकायं स्थूलशीर्षं महातनुम्। अष्टदंष्ट्रं हरिच्छ्मश्रुं शङ्कुकर्णं विलोहितम् ।। ९.
He had three feet, a massive body, a large head, eight fangs, tawny beard, conch-shaped ears, and was reddish in appearance.
ह्रस्व बाहुं प्रबाहुञ्च पिङ्गलं सुविभीषणम्। वैवर्तज्ञानसम्पन्नं सम्बुद्धं ज्ञानसम्पदा ।। ९.
With short and long arms, tawny and very fearsome, endowed with knowledge of transformation, awakened and rich in wisdom.
एवंविधं सुतं दृष्ट्वा विश्वरूपधरं तथा। पिता दृष्ट्वाब्रवीत्तत्र कुबेरोऽयमिति स्वयम् ।। ९.
Seeing such a son, possessing a universal form, the father declared there, 'He is Kubera,' by his own words.
कुत्सायां क्वितिशब्दोऽयं शरीरं बेरमुच्यते । कुबेरः कुशरीरत्वान्नाम्ना तेन च सोऽङ्कितः ।। ९.
The word 'kuti' denotes reproach, and 'bera' means body; because of his deformed body, he was marked with the name Kubera.
यस्माद्विश्रवसोऽपत्यं सादृश्याद्विश्रवा इव। तस्माद्वैश्रवणो नाम नाम्ना लोके भविष्यति ।। ९.
Because he was the son of Viśravas and resembled Viśravas, he will be known in the world by the name Vaiśravaṇa.
ऋद्ध्यां कुबेरोऽजनयद्विश्रुतं नलकूबरम्। रावणं कुम्भकर्णञ्च कन्यां शूर्पणखान्तथा। विभीषणं चतुर्थांस्तान्कैकस्यजनयेत्सुतान् ।। ९.
Through prosperity, Kubera begot the famous Nalakūbara. Kaikasī bore Rāvaṇa, Kumbhakarṇa, the daughter Śūrpaṇakhā, and the fourth, Vibhīṣaṇa, as her sons.
शङ्कुकर्णो दशग्रीवः पिङ्गलो रक्तमूर्द्धजः। चतुष्पाद्विंशतिबुजो महाकायो महा बलः ।। ९.
Ten-headed, conch-eared, tawny, with red hair, four-footed, twenty arms, of great size and immense strength.
जात्याञ्जननिभो दंष्ट्रो लोहितग्रीव एव च। राजसेनो जययुक्तो रूपेण च बलेन च ।। ९.
Black as collyrium by birth, with fangs and a red neck, endowed with royal power, victorious, in form and in strength.
सत्यबुद्धिर्दृढतनू राक्षसैरेव रावणः । निसर्गाद्दारुणः क्रूरो रावणाद्रावणस्तु सः ।। ९.
Rāvaṇa, with true understanding and a strong body, was a Rākṣasa by nature—fierce, cruel, and thus called Rāvaṇa.
हिरण्यकशिपुस्त्वासीत्स राजा पूर्वजन्मनि। चतुर्युगानि राजात्र त्रयोदश स राक्षसः ।। ९.
In a previous birth, he was the king Hiraṇyakaśipu; as a Rākṣasa, he ruled for thirteen cycles of four ages.
ताः पञ्चकोट्यो वर्षाणामाख्याताः सङ्ख्यया द्विजैः। नियुतान्येकषष्टिश्च सङ्ख्याविद्भिरुदाहृता ।। ९.
Those five crore years have been declared by the twice-born as the count; and sixty-one niyutas have been stated by those skilled in reckoning.
