कालिका शतिकेभ्यश्च सर्पा जायन्ति सर्वशः। संस्वेदजाश्च जायन्ते वृश्चिकाः शुष्कगोमयात् ॥ ८.
From black cloth, snakes are born in all directions; and from dried cow dung, sweat-born creatures such as scorpions arise.
गोभ्यो हि महिषेभ्यश्च जायन्ते जन्तवः प्रभो। मत्स्यादयश्च विविधा अण्डकुक्षौ विशेषतः ॥ ८.
From cows and buffaloes, O lord, creatures are born; especially, various kinds of fish and others are produced in eggs.
चैवीरिकाश्च जायन्ते तथा गोजाकुलानि च। तथान्यानि च सूक्ष्माणि जलौकादीनि जातयः ॥ ८.
Likewise, caivīrikās arise, as do herds of cattle; and other subtle beings, such as leeches and similar kinds, are also born.
मक्षिकाणां विकाराणि जायन्ते जात योऽपरे । प्रायेण तु वसन्त्यस्मिन्नुच्छिष्टोदककर्द्दमे ॥ ८.
Various forms of flies are produced, as are other types that are mostly found in leftover water and mud.
मशकानां विकाराणि भ्रमराणां तथैव च। तृणेभ्यश्चैव जायन्ते पुत्रिका पुत्रभासकाः ॥ ८.
Different forms of mosquitoes and bees likewise come into being; and from grasses are born creatures called putrikās and putrabhāsakas.
मणिच्छेदास्तथा व्यालाः पोतजाः परिकीर्त्तिताः। शतवेरिविकाराणि करीषेभ्यो भवन्तिह ॥ ८.
Fragments of gems, serpents, and those born in ships are mentioned; and various forms of śataveri arise here from dung.
एवमादिरसङ्ख्यातो गणः संस्वेदजो मया। समासाभिहितो ह्येष प्राक्कर्मवशजः स्मृतः ॥ ८.
Thus, this innumerable group born from sweat has been briefly described by me; it is said to be produced by previous actions.
तथाऽन्ये नैऋताः सत्त्वास्ते स्मृता उपसर्गजाः। पूतास्तु योनिजाः केचित्केचिदौत्पत्तिकाः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
Likewise, there are other beings called naiṛtas, known as those born from affliction; some are considered to be womb-born, while others are said to be spontaneous.
प्रायेण देवाः सर्वे वै विज्ञेया ह्युपपत्तिजाः । केचित्तु योनिजा देवाः केचिदेवानिमित्ततः ॥ ८.
Generally, all the gods should be understood as being born by manifestation; but some gods are womb-born, and some arise without cause.
तूलालाघश्च कोलश्च शिवा कन्या तथैव च। अपत्यं सरमायास्तु गणा वै सरमादयः ॥ ८.
Tūlālāgha, Kola, Śivā, and Kanyā as well; and the offspring of Saramā—the groups known as the Saramās.
श्यामश्च शबलश्चैव अर्जुनो हरितस्तथा। कृष्णो धूम्रारूणश्चैव तूलालाघश्च कद्रुकाः ॥ ८.
Śyāma, Śabala, Arjuna, Harita, Kṛṣṇa, Dhūmrārūṇa, Tūlālāgha, and Kadrukas.
सुरसाथ विजज्ञे तु शतमेकं शिरो मतम्। सर्पाणां तक्षको राजा नागानाञ्चापि वासुकिः । द्र. गरुडपुराणे १.१९७.१२ मध्ये वासुकेः पार्थिवमण्डले एवं तक्षकस्य वायुमण्डले स्थितिः तमोबहुल इत्येष गणः क्रोधवशात्मकः ॥ ८.
Surasā is said to have produced a hundred-headed one; among serpents, Takṣaka is king, and among nāgas, Vāsuki; this group, full of darkness, is governed by wrath.
पुलहस्यात्मजा सर्गस्ताम्रायास्तन्निबोधत। बह्वन्यास्त्वभिविख्यातास्ताम्रायाश्च विजज्ञिरे ॥ ८.
Now hear of the offspring of Pulaha’s son, Tāmrā; many others, well-known, were also born from Tāmrā.
श्येनी भासी तथा क्रौञ्ची धृतराष्ट्री शुकी तथा। अरुणस्य भार्या श्येनी तु वीर्यवन्तौ महाबलौ। सम्पातिञ्च जटायुञ्च प्रसूता पक्षिसत्तमौ ॥ ८.
Śyenī, Bhāsī, Krauñcī, Dhṛtarāṣṭrī, and Śukī; Śyenī, the wife of Aruṇa, gave birth to the mighty Sampāti and Jaṭāyu, the foremost of birds.
सम्पातिरजनत् पुत्रं कन्यामेकां तथैव च। जटायुषश्च ये पुत्राः काक गृध्राश्चकर्णिनः ॥ ८.
Sampāti fathered a son and also a daughter; and Jaṭāyu’s sons were crows and vultures with large ears.
भार्या गरुत्मतश्चापि भासी क्रौञ्ची तथा शुकी। धृतराष्ट्री च भद्रा च तास्वपत्यानि वक्ष्यते ॥ ८.
The wives of Garutmat—Bhāsī, Krauñcī, Śukī, Dhṛtarāṣṭrī, and Bhadrā—of these, their offspring will be described.
शुकी गरुत्मतः पुत्रान् सुषुवे षट् परिश्रुतान् । त्रिशिरं सुमुखञ्चैव बलं पृष्ठं महाबलम् ॥ ८.
Śukī bore to Garutmat six renowned sons: Triśiras, Sumukha, Bala, Pṛṣṭha, and the mighty Mahābala.
त्रिशङ्खनेत्रं सुमुखं सुरूपं सुरसं बलम्। एषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च गरुडानां महात्मनाम् ॥ ८.
Triśaṅkhanetra, Sumukha, Surūpa, Surasa, and Bala; these are the sons and grandsons of the great-hearted Garuḍas.
चतुर्दश सहस्राणि क्रूराणां पन्नगाशिनाम्। पुत्रपौत्रविसर्गाच्च तेषां वै वंशविस्तरः ॥ ८.
There are fourteen thousand cruel, serpent-eating ones; from their sons and grandsons, the lineage is extended.
व्याप्तानि यानि देशानि तानि वक्ष्ये यथाक्रमम्। शाल्मलिद्वीपमखिलं देवकूटञ्च पर्वतम् ॥ ८.
The regions they have filled, I will now describe in order: the entire Śālmalī island and the mountain Devakūṭa.
मणिमन्तञ्च शैलेन्द्रं सहस्रशिखरं तथा। पर्णमालं सुकेशञ्च शतश्रृङ्गं तथाचलम् ॥ ८.
Maniman, the lord of mountains, with a thousand peaks; Parṇamāla, Sukeśa, and the mountain Śataśṛṅga as well.
कौरजं पञ्चशिखरं हेमकूटञ्च पर्वतम्। प्रचण्डवायुप्रभवैर्दीपितैः पझरागिभिः ॥ ८.
Kauraja, the five-peaked one, and Hemakūṭa mountain, blazing with fierce winds and inhabited by Pajharāgis.
शैलजालानि व्याप्तानि गारुडैस्तैर्महात्मभिः । भासीपुत्राः स्मृता भासा उलूका काककुक्कुटाः ॥ ८.
Those noble Garuḍas filled the ranges of mountains; their sons are known as Bhāsas, Ulūkas, Kāka-kukkuṭas.
मयूराः कलविङ्काश्च कपोता लावतित्तिराः। क्रौञ्ची वार्द्धीणसान् श्येनी कुररान्सारसान्बकान् ॥ ८.
Peacocks, Kalaviṅkas, pigeons, Lāva and Tittira birds; Krauñcī, Vārddhīnas, Śyenī, Kurarās, Sārasas, and Bakas.
इत्येवमादयोन्येऽपि क्रव्यादा ये च पक्षिणः। धृतराष्ट्री च हंसांश्च कलहंसांश्च भामिनी ॥ ८.
Thus, and others as well, the flesh-eating birds; Dhṛtarāṣṭrī, Hamsas, and Kalahaṃsas, O beautiful one.
चक्रवाकांश्च विहगान्सर्वांश्चैवादकान् द्विजान्। एतानेव विजज्ञेऽथ पुत्रपौत्रमनन्तकम् ॥ ८.
Chakravākas and all other birds, and all water-dwelling twice-born; these indeed were produced, with countless descendants of sons and grandsons.
गरुडस्यात्मजाः प्रोक्ता इरायाः श्रृणुत प्रजाः। इरा प्रजज्ञे कन्या वैतिस्रः कमललोचनाः ॥ ८.
These are said to be the sons of Garuḍa; now hear of the offspring of Irā. Irā gave birth to three daughters with lotus-like eyes.
वन स्पतीनां वृक्षाणां वीरुधाञ्चैव मातरः। लता चैवाथ वल्ली च वीरुधा चेति तास्तु वै ॥ ८.
They are the mothers of forest trees, trees, and herbs; and also creepers and vines, and likewise the herbs.
लता वनस्पतीञ्जज्ञे ह्यपुष्पान् पुलिनस्थितान् । युक्तान्पुष्पफलैर्वृक्षान् लता वै सम्प्रसूयते ॥ ८.
The creeper gave birth to forest trees, those without flowers, standing on riverbanks; and the creeper also produced trees bearing flowers and fruits.
अथ वल्ली तु गुल्मांश्च त्वक्सारास्तृणजातयः। वीरुधा तदपत्यानि वंशश्चात्र समाप्यते ॥ ८.
Then the vine gave rise to bushes, fibrous plants, and grasses; these are the offspring of the herbs, and thus the bamboo is included here.
