Having spoken thus, the illustrious Indra, seeing Sukarmā, the renowned Brahmin, calmed of anger, vanished there itself.
O best of Brahmins, his disciple was the wise Pauṣyañji, and the second was Hiraṇyanābha Kauśikya, a king's son.
Pauṣyañji taught half of the thousand Saṃhitās, and thus his virtuous disciples became known as the Northern Sāmagas.
The valiant Kauśikya taught five hundred Saṃhitās, and the disciples of Hiraṇyanābha are remembered as the Eastern Sāmagas.
Lokākṣī, Kuthumi, Kuśītī, and Lāṅgali—these four were disciples of Pauṣyañji; now hear of their branches.
Rāṇāyanīya, son of Taṇḍi, and another, the learned Mūlacārī; Sakatiputra and Sahasātyaputra—know these as the branches of Lokākṣī.
Kuthumi had three sons by birth: Rasapāsara, Bhāgavitti, and the brilliant one; these are known as the three branches of the Kauthumas.
Śauridyu and Śṛṅgiputra, both steadfast in conduct, and Rāṇāyanīya, son of Sumitra—these are experts in the Sāmaveda.
Śṛṅgiputra, the great ascetic, taught three Saṃhitās: Caila, Prācīnayoga, and Surāla, O best of Brahmins.
The Kauthuma, Pārāśarya, taught six Saṃhitās: Āsurāyaṇa and Vaiśākhya, both devoted to the ancient Veda.
Prācīnayogaputra and the wise Patañjali—these are the branches of Kauthuma; six branches of Pārāśarya are remembered. Lāṅgali and Śālihotra each taught six Saṃhitās.
Bhāluki, Kāmahāni, Jaimini, Lomagāyin, Kaṇḍa, and Kolaha—these six are known as the Lāṅgalas. These disciples of Lāṅgali established the Saṃhitās.
Then Kṛta, son of Hiraṇyanābha and prince, composed twenty-four Saṃhitās, O best of men, and taught them to his disciples—now hear their names.
Rāḍa, Mahavīrya, Pañcama, Vāhana, Tālaka, Pāṇḍaka, Kālikā, Rājika, Gautama, Ajabasta, and Somarāja—these are his disciples in order.
Pṛṣṭhagna, Parikṛṣṭa, Ulūkhalaka, Yavīyasa, Vaiśāla, Aṃgulīya, and Kauśika—
Sālimañjarisatya, Kāpīya, Kānīka, and Parāśara the righteous—these are the Sāmagas who have passed on.
But among all the Sāmagas, two are said to be the foremost: Pauṣyañji and Kṛti, who are the arrangers of the Saṃhitās.
Sumantu divided the Atharva Veda into two parts and gave them to the twice-born; then he gave the entire text again to Kabandha, along with the knowledge in proper order.
Kabandha, having divided it into two, gave one part again to Pathya; the second, for the study of the Veda, he divided once more into four parts.
Modo, Brahmabala, Pippalāda, Śaukāyani the knower of dharma, and the fourth, Tapana—these four steadfast disciples are known as the students of Vedasparśa.
Again, know that the division of Pathya’s tradition is threefold: Jājali, Kumuda and others, and the third is remembered as Śaunaka.
Śaunaka, dividing it into two, gave one part to Babhrava; the wise one gave the second Saṃhitā to Saindhavāyana.
Saindhava gave it to Muñjakeśa, and that was again divided into two; Nakṣatrakalpa, Vaitāna, the third Saṃhitānidhi, the fourth is the Kalpa of Aṅgiras, and the fifth is Śāntikalpa.
These are the foremost Atharvaṇa divisions of the Saṃhitās; having made sixfold arrangements, I have also spoken of the Purāṇa, O best of sages.
Ātreya, the wise Sumati, Kāśyapa, Akṛtavraṇa, Bhāradvāja, Agnivarcā, Vasiṣṭha, Mitrayu, Sāvarṇi, Somadatta, Suśarmā, and Śāṃśapāyana—
These steadfast disciples of mine, O Brāhmaṇa, in the Purāṇas, each made three Saṃhitās from three.
Kāśyapa, Sāvarṇi, Śāṃśapāyana, and Sāmikā are the compilers of the Saṃhitās; this is the earlier Saṃhitā.
All these are in four sections and express a single meaning; in different recensions they are distinct, just as the branches of the Veda; all are of four thousand verses, except the Śāṃśapāyanika.
The Lomaharṣaṇika is the root, then come the Kāśyapika, and the third is Sāvarṇika, who are learned in the meaning of Yajur Veda sentences.
Other Śāṃśapāyanikas are adorned with the meaning of injunctions; there are eight thousand and six hundred Ṛk verses.
