There was a certain task for those excellent Brāhmaṇas; having reached the summit of Meru, they deliberated together at that time.
"Whoever among us, O best of Brāhmaṇas, does not arrive here within seven nights, let him be considered as having committed the slaying of a Brāhmaṇa—such was our agreement."
Then all of them, along with their groups, except Vaiśampāyana, departed within seven nights to the place where the assembly had been made.
Because of the words of the Brāhmaṇas, he incurred the sin of Brāhmaṇa-slaying. Then Vaiśampāyana, having gathered his disciples, spoke to them.
"O best of Brāhmaṇas, undertake the expiation for Brāhmaṇa-slaying on my behalf. All of you, having assembled, tell me what is beneficial."
"I alone shall perform it; let these sages remain. I shall raise the power by my own cultivated austerity."
Thus addressed, Yājñavalkya, angered, spoke: "Return to me all that you have learned from me."
Thus spoken to, he returned the Yajur mantras to his teacher, vomiting them out, stained with blood, O best knower of Brahman.
Then, having entered into meditation, he worshipped the Sun, O twice-born ones. That portion of the Yajus which had been lost ascended to the sky and remained there.
Then those Yajus that had gone upward into the solar orb, the Sun, pleased for the sake of Brahman, gave to the wise Yājñavalkya, taking the form of a horse.
The Brāhmaṇas who study those Yajus, which were given to him in the form of a horse, became known as Vājins.
Those by whom the expiation for Brāhmaṇa-slaying was performed are called Carakas, from the act of wandering. The disciples of Vaiśampāyana are thus known as Carakas.
Thus these Carakas have been described; now hear of the Vājins. They are the disciples of Yājñavalkya: Kaṇva, Vaideha, and Śālina.
Madhyandina, Śāpeya, Vidigdha, Uddala, Tāmrāyaṇa, Vātsya, Gālava, Śaiśirī, Āṭavī, Parṇī, Vīraṇī, and Parāyaṇa—these are named.
Thus these Vājins, fifteen in number, are remembered. In all, there are one hundred and one recensions of the Yajus.
Then Jaimini instructed his son Sumantu, and Sumantu, having a son, likewise instructed his son. Having a son, Sukarmā also instructed his son.
He, Sukarmā, quickly mastered a thousand Saṃhitās, and then, radiant as the sun, taught those thousand Saṃhitās.
When some studied during prohibited times, Indra struck them down; then, for the sake of his disciples, Sukarmā undertook a fast unto death.
Seeing him thus angered, Indra granted him a boon again: 'Two disciples of yours, endowed with great strength and fiery brilliance, will be born.'
'These two, both highly wise and studying together, will master a thousand Saṃhitās; O best of twice-born, do not be angry with them, for they are blessed divine beings.'
Having spoken thus, the illustrious Indra, seeing Sukarmā, the renowned Brahmin, calmed of anger, vanished there itself.
O best of Brahmins, his disciple was the wise Pauṣyañji, and the second was Hiraṇyanābha Kauśikya, a king's son.
Pauṣyañji taught half of the thousand Saṃhitās, and thus his virtuous disciples became known as the Northern Sāmagas.
The valiant Kauśikya taught five hundred Saṃhitās, and the disciples of Hiraṇyanābha are remembered as the Eastern Sāmagas.
Lokākṣī, Kuthumi, Kuśītī, and Lāṅgali—these four were disciples of Pauṣyañji; now hear of their branches.
Rāṇāyanīya, son of Taṇḍi, and another, the learned Mūlacārī; Sakatiputra and Sahasātyaputra—know these as the branches of Lokākṣī.
Kuthumi had three sons by birth: Rasapāsara, Bhāgavitti, and the brilliant one; these are known as the three branches of the Kauthumas.
Śauridyu and Śṛṅgiputra, both steadfast in conduct, and Rāṇāyanīya, son of Sumitra—these are experts in the Sāmaveda.
Śṛṅgiputra, the great ascetic, taught three Saṃhitās: Caila, Prācīnayoga, and Surāla, O best of Brahmins.
The Kauthuma, Pārāśarya, taught six Saṃhitās: Āsurāyaṇa and Vaiśākhya, both devoted to the ancient Veda.
