Knowledge is the discernment of the difference between the unmanifest and the manifest, the transformation in the insentient, and the distinction between the sentient and the non-sentient.
This is remembered as the characteristic of the limbs of dharma, as taught by the ancient sages who knew the essence of dharma in the previous Svāyambhuva Manvantara.
Here I will explain to you the rule of the Manvantara, for each varṇa and for the fourfold varṇa system; and in each Manvantara, a different revelation is prescribed.
The Ṛk, Yajus, and Sāman hymns are to be recited as appropriate for each deity; but even at the time of the great dissolution, only the Śatarudriya is to be omitted.
The invocation, the hymn, proceed as before; the hymn of substances, the hymn of qualities, the hymn of actions, and the fourth, the hymn of lineage—these are the four kinds of hymns.
In all the Manus’ ages, as there are gods, for them Brahma initiates the fourfold hymn; thus, the emergence of mantras and their qualities is also fourfold.
In the Vedas—Atharva, Yajus, and Sāman—separately, the sages practiced severe austerity, the highest and most difficult to perform.
Mantras appeared here in earlier Manvantaras, arising in five ways: from satisfaction, from fear, from sorrow, from happiness, and from grief.
By the completeness of the sages’ austerity, and by their vision, spontaneously, the state of being a seer among the sages—I shall now explain its characteristics here.
A seer is said to be fivefold: of the past and the future; therefore, I shall explain the sages and the origin of their seerhood.
When the qualities are in equilibrium, at the time of total dissolution, and when there is transgression among the gods, or their mutual substitution, as appropriate.
That which arises without prior awareness is set in motion for the sake of consciousness; thus, what is unintentional is governed by consciousness.
And as those two proceed, just as two fish in water, the principle governed by consciousness operates according to the nature of the qualities.
Because of instrumentality, action then proceeds; and due to the relationship between object and subject, and because of the desire for the object, so it is.
Through time, which brings attainment, distinctions arise from causes; then, the manifest entities, beginning with the Great Principle, are perfected in sequence.
From the Great Principle arises ego, and from that, the elements and senses; the divisions of elements are born from these divisions, mutually; the effect, as the cause of perfection, transforms immediately.
Just as a spark, when struck, rises upward all at once, so too the knower of the field, when manifest, acts at one time through karma.
Just as a firefly is suddenly seen in darkness, so too the manifest arises from the unmanifest, like a firefly with its glow.
That Great One, embodied, is established where he was at first; there, the wise one stands, as at the entrance to a hall.
The Great One, beyond darkness, is distinguished by his difference; there, the wise one stands—thus, it is said, at the end of darkness.
The intellect, as it evolves, appears in four forms: knowledge, dispassion, lordliness, and righteousness—these four.
These, indeed, are the natural, clear marks of the Great One with body; the transformation of the Great Principle is called perfection.
Here, that which lies within the city is called the knower of the field, or knowledge of the field; because it dwells in the city, it is called puruṣa, and because of its knowledge of the field, it is so named.
The knower of the field is called 'bhagavān' due to knowledge of the field and mind; because he rests through intellect, he is indeed of the nature of consciousness; for perfection, both the manifest and unmanifest, which are insentient, are encompassed.
Thus, cessation is the knower of the field, united with the knower of the field; when the knower of the field is fully known, this realm becomes an object of enjoyment.
O sage, this root 'ṛṣ' means to go, to hear, to be true, and to practice austerity; when one is established in these, he is remembered as a seer by Brahmā.
At the very moment of cessation, the unmanifest is itself the seer through intellect; because he perceives the supreme, he is therefore remembered as the supreme seer.
From the meaning of movement, from the root 'ṛṣ', the name arises originally; because he is self-born, he is remembered as self-seer; the lords, self-manifested, are the mind-born sons of Brahmā.
Because the great one, established before, is not destroyed by measures, and because those wise ones perceive the great with all qualities, therefore they are called great seers, perceivers beyond intellect.
Among the lords, those who are auspicious and those who are of inner mind, having abandoned ego and darkness, arose from the essence of seerhood.
