Varaha Purana

एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं मया विस्तरतो मुने

All this has been explained to you in detail by me, O sage.

दक्षिणस्य च विप्रर्षे तथा शृंगेश्वरस्य च

Of the southern region, O best of Brahmins, and likewise of Shringeśvara—

व्युष्टिः क्षेत्रस्य महती तीर्थानां च समुद्भवः

The great extent of the land and the origin of the sacred places—

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे गोकर्णशृंगेश्वरादीनां माहात्म्यं नाम षोडशाधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus ends the two hundred sixteenth chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of Gokarna, Shringeśvara, and Others,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.

; अथ धरणीवराहसंवादफलश्रुतिवर्णनम् उक्तं भगवता सर्वं यथावत्परमेष्ठिना

Now, the description of the merit gained from hearing the dialogue between the Earth and Varaha: All has been told exactly as it was by the supreme Lord.

भगवद्विश्वरूपस्य स्थाणोरप्रतिमौजसः

Of the divine, all-pervading form of the Lord, of Sthanu, whose might is unmatched—

यथा शरीरं शृङ्गं च पुण्यक्षेत्रे प्रतिष्ठितम्

How his body and the horn were established in the holy land—

तन्मे ब्रूहि महाभाग यथातत्त्वं जगत्पते पुलस्त्यो वक्ष्यते शेषं यदतोऽन्यन्महामुने

Tell me this in truth, O greatly fortunate one, Lord of the world. Pulastya will relate the rest, O great sage, whatever remains.

सर्वेषामेव तीर्थानामेषां फलविनिश्चयम्

The certain results of all these sacred places—

पुत्रो मे मत्समः सम्यग्वेदवेदांगतत्त्ववित्

My son, equal to me, thoroughly learned in the Veda and its branches—

यशस्वी कीर्त्तिमान्भूत्वा वन्द्यते प्रेत्य चेह च

Becoming renowned and celebrated, he will be honored both after death and here in this world.

मंगल्यं च शिवं चैव धर्मकामार्थसाधकम्

It brings auspiciousness and welfare, and accomplishes righteousness, desire, and wealth.

धन्यं यशस्यं पापघ्नं स्वस्तिकृच्छान्तिकारकम्

It is blessed, brings fame, destroys sin, brings well-being, and brings peace.

कीर्तयित्वा व्रजेत्स्वर्गं कल्यमुत्थाय मानवः इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्देवः परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः ।। 217.

Having recited it, a person rises to happiness and goes to heaven. Thus, having spoken, the blessed god, the supreme creator, ceased.

सनत्कुमारं सन्दिश्य विरराम महायशाः

Having instructed Sanatkumara, the illustrious one became silent.

वराहभूमिसंवादं सारमुद्धृत्य सत्तमाः

Extracting the essence of the dialogue between Varaha and the Earth, O best ones—

सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः स याति परमां गतिम्

One who is freed from all sins attains the highest state.

प्रयागे ब्रह्मतीर्थे च तीर्थे चामरकण्टके

At Prayaga, at the Brahma-tirtha, and at the tirtha of Amarakaṇṭaka,

कपिलां द्विजमुख्याय सम्यग्दत्त्वा तु यत्फलम्

the merit gained by properly giving a Kapila cow to a foremost Brahmin—

श्रुत्वाऽस्यैव दशाध्यायं शुचिर्भूत्वा समाहितः

by hearing just these ten chapters, having become pure and attentive,

यः पुनः सततं शृण्वन्नैरन्तर्येण बुद्धिमान्

whoever, moreover, listens constantly and without interruption, with understanding,

सर्वयज्ञेषु यत्पुण्यं सर्वदानेषु यत्फलम्

the merit that is obtained from all sacrifices and the fruit of all gifts—

तत्प्राप्नोति न सन्देहो वराहवचनं यथा

that is attained; there is no doubt, just as the words of Varaha declare.

अपुत्रस्य भवेत्पुत्रः सपौत्रस्य सुपौत्रकः 217.

For one without a son, a son will be born; for one with a grandson, a great-grandson will be born.

तस्य नारायणो देवः सन्तुष्टः स्याद्धि सर्वदा

For him, the god Narayana will always be pleased.

श्रुत्वा तु पूजयेच्छास्त्रं यथा विष्णुं सनातनम्

Having heard, one should worship the scripture just as one worships the eternal Vishnu.

यथाशक्ति नृपो ग्रामैः पूजयेच्च वसुन्धरे

A king should, according to his ability, worship the earth with villages.

सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुसायुज्यमाप्नुयात्

Freed from all sins, he attains union with Vishnu.

अथ पुराणपठनादिविषयानुक्रमणिकाध्यायः वीरेश्वरेण सह माधवभद्रनाम्ना काश्यां वराहकथितं लिखितं पुराणम्

Now, the chapter on the sequence of topics such as the reading of the Purana: the Purana spoken by Varaha in Kashi, together with Viresvara, named Madhavabhadra, was written down.
