मुनयोऽप्सरसो यक्षा मोहिता मम मायया
Sages, celestial nymphs, and yakshas are all deluded by my maya.
तपस्तपोधनानां च सिद्धक्षेत्रं हि तत्कृतम्
That place has become a field of accomplishment for those devoted to austerities.
कुरुक्षेत्रादपि बुधाः क्षेत्रमेतद्विशिष्यते
The wise declare that this field surpasses even Kurukshetra.
प्रभवन्ति यतः सर्वा गंगाद्याः सरितां वराः
For from here arise all the foremost rivers, beginning with the Ganga.
सर्वे प्रस्रवणाः पुण्याः सर्वे पुण्याः शिलोच्चयाः
All the springs here are sacred, and all the lofty rocks are holy.
शैलेश्वर इति ख्यातः शरीरं यत्र मे स्थितम्
It is known as Shaileśvara, where my body is established.
भागीरथी वेगवती कलुषं दहते नृणाम् 215.
The Bhagirathi, swift-flowing, burns away the sins of men.
पानावगाहनात्तस्यास्तारयेत्सप्त वै कुलान्
By bathing or immersing in her waters, one uplifts seven generations.
तत्र स्नात्वा दिवं यान्ति मृतास्ते त्वपुनर्भवाः
Those who bathe there and die ascend to heaven and are not born again.
उद्धराम्यहमेतान्वै प्रीतः संसारसागरात्
Pleased, I rescue them from the ocean of worldly existence.
स्नापनार्थे मम शुचिः श्रद्दधानोऽनसूयकः
Whoever, pure, faithful, and free from envy, bathes there for my ablution—
आहृतस्याग्निहोत्रस्य यत्फलं तस्य तद्भवेत्
He attains the same fruit as is gained by offering Agnihotra.
मृगशृङ्गोदकं नाम नित्यं मुनिजनप्रियम्
There is a water source called Mriga-shringa, always dear to the sages.
यावज्जीवकृतं पापं तत्क्षणादेव नश्यति
Whatever sin has been committed throughout life is instantly destroyed there.
अग्निष्टोमफलं तत्र स्नातमात्रः प्रपद्यते
By merely bathing there, one obtains the fruit of an Agnishtoma sacrifice.
न तां पापाः कृतघ्नो वा कदाचित्प्राप्नुयान्नरः
No sinful or ungrateful man ever attains that place.
वाग्मत्यां ते नराः स्नान्ति लभन्ते चोत्तमां गतिम् 215.
Men who bathe in the Vagmati attain the highest state.
वाग्मत्याः सलिले स्नात्वा ये मां पश्यन्ति संस्कृताः
Those who, purified, behold me after bathing in the waters of the Vagmati—
मत्प्रभावात्तु स्नातस्य सर्वं नश्यति किल्बिषम्
By my power, all sin is destroyed for one who bathes.
वाग्मत्याः सलिले स्नात्वा ये मां पश्यन्ति संस्कृताः
Those who, purified, behold me after bathing in the waters of Vagmati—
तत्र तत्र फलं दद्याद्राजसूयाश्वमेधयोः
There, in every place, one should offer the fruit equal to that of the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices.
मूलक्षेत्रं तु विज्ञेयं रुद्रेणाधिष्ठितं स्वयम्
Know that the root sanctuary is presided over by Rudra himself.
वृतो नागसहस्रैस्तु द्वारि तिष्ठति मे सदा
Surrounded by thousands of serpents, he always stands at my gate.
प्रथमं स नमस्कार्यस्ततोऽहं तदनन्तरम्
He should first be saluted, and then I, immediately after.
वन्दते परया भक्त्या यो मां तत्र नरः सदा
Whoever always worships me there with supreme devotion—
गन्धैर्माल्यैश्च मे मूर्त्तिमभ्यर्च्चयति यो नरः
Whoever honors my form with scents and garlands—
यस्तु दद्यात्प्रदीपं मे पर्वते श्रद्धयान्वितः 215.
And whoever, with faith, offers me a lamp on the mountain—
गीतवादित्रनृत्यैस्तु स्तुतिभिर्जागरेण वा
With song, instruments, dance, hymns, or by keeping vigil—
दध्ना क्षीरेण मधुना सर्पिषा सलिलेन वा
With curd, milk, honey, ghee, or even water—
यः श्राद्धे भोजनं दद्याद्विप्रेभ्यः श्रद्धयान्वितः
Whoever, with faith, gives food to Brāhmaṇas at a śrāddha—
