Varaha Purana

अभिप्रायं च सर्वेषां जानामि द्विजसत्तम 213.

O best of twice-born, I know the intention of them all.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे गोकर्णेश्वरमाहात्म्ये त्रयोदशाधिकद्विशततमोऽ ध्यायः

Thus ends the two hundred thirteenth chapter in the glorification of Gokarneshvara, in the divine scripture of the Varaha Purana.

; पुनः गोकर्णमाहात्म्यनन्दिकेश्वरवरप्रदानवर्णनम् अन्तर्हितं ततस्तस्मिन्भवे वै भूतनायके

Again, the account of the greatness of Gokarna and the granting of boons by Nandikeshvara: Then, in that existence, the lord of beings became invisible.

चतुर्भुजस्त्रिणयनो दिव्यसंस्थानसंस्थितः

He stood there with four arms, three eyes, and a divine form.

त्रिशूली परिघी दण्डी पिनाकी मौञ्जमेखली

Holding a trident, a club, a staff, and the Pinaka bow, wearing a girdle of munja grass—

आस्थितः पादमाकृष्य ह्याह्वयन्निव स द्विजः

He stood, drawing back his foot, as if calling out, that twice-born one.

तं दृष्ट्वा खेचराः सर्वा देवताः परिशंकिताः

Seeing him, all the celestial beings moving in the sky became apprehensive.

तेभ्यः श्रुत्वा सहस्राक्षः सर्वे चान्ये दिवौकसः

Hearing this, the thousand-eyed one and all the other dwellers of heaven—

अयं कश्चिद्वरं लब्ध्वा ह्युमाकान्तान्महेश्वरात्

‘This one, having obtained a boon from Maheshvara, beloved of Uma—

यादृशोऽस्य महोत्साहस्तेजोबलसमन्वितः

Such is his great enthusiasm, endowed with brilliance and strength—

यावच्चैवोजसा नाकमसौ चंक्रमते प्रभुः

As long as he moves through heaven with such power, this lord—

एवमुक्त्वा तु ते तत्र मया सह सुरोत्तमाः 214.

Thus speaking, those excellent gods remained there with me.

विधाता भगवान्विष्णुः प्रभुस्त्रिभुवनेश्वरः

The Creator, the Blessed Vishnu, the Lord, the Ruler of the three worlds—

कृतेन तेन विबुधाः पश्यन्ति मुनयश्च तं

By that act, the gods and sages behold him.

जगाम तत्र यत्रासौ नन्दी तिष्ठति देववत् सफलं जीवितं मेऽद्य सफलश्च परिश्रमः

He went to the place where Nandi stands, like a god; today my life is fulfilled, and my effort has borne fruit.

यन्मे दृष्टः सुराध्यक्षः सर्वलोकगुरुर्हरिः

Because I have seen Hari, the lord of the gods, the teacher of all worlds.

यच्च मे प्रभुरव्यग्रः प्रीतः पापहरो हरः

And because the Lord Hara, remover of sins, was calm and pleased with me.

परो मेऽनुग्रहः सोऽत्र पूतोऽस्मि खलु साम्प्रतम्

This is a supreme favor to me; now, indeed, I am purified.

मामुद्दिश्य हितं तथ्यं तथैव च न चान्यथा

He spoke what is true and beneficial for me, and not otherwise.

तेनास्मि परमप्रीत आदृतः परमेष्ठिना वयं तं वरदं देवं द्रक्ष्यामस्ते वरप्रदम्

Therefore I am deeply pleased and honored by the supreme Lord; we shall see that god who grants boons, that bestower of blessings.

तवैष तपसा तुष्टः स्वयं प्रत्यक्षताङ्गतः

By your austerity, he is satisfied and has appeared directly before you.

कुत्र द्रक्ष्यामहे देवं भगवन्तं कपालिनम् अनुगृह्य तु मां देवस्तत्रैवादर्शनं गतः ।।214.

Where shall we see the god, the blessed Lord Kapalin? Having favored me, the god vanished from sight right there.

न जाने कुत्र वा देवं कुत्रास्ते तद्गवेष्यताम् किमत्र नन्दिनं देवो येनासौ नोक्तवान्प्रभुम्

I do not know where the god is, or where he abides; let him be sought. Why did the god speak to Nandi about the Lord?

तन्मे कथय देवेश गुह्यं किं चास्ति शूलिनः यदुक्तवान्महेशानो नाख्येयोऽस्मि पुरान्जनि

Tell me, Lord of gods, is there any secret of the trident-bearer? What did the great Lord say that I, a person of old, should not be told?

किमुक्तवान्महादेवो नन्दिनं तच्छृणुष्व मे अस्ति कश्चित्समुद्देशः क्षितेः सिद्धोऽद्रिसंकटः

What did Mahadeva say to Nandi? Hear it from me: there is a certain region on earth, a sacred place among mountains.

पारे हिमवतः पुण्ये तपोवनगणैर्युतः

On the far side of the Himalaya, blessed and filled with groups of ascetic groves.

सोऽनुग्राह्यो मयावश्यं तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषः

He must certainly be favored by me, his sins burned away by austerity.

तस्य नाम्ना च तत्स्थानं दिव्यं चिरतपोभृतम्

That place, named after him, is divine and inhabited by those who have performed long penance.

मृगरूपेण चरता तत्र वै त्रिदशा मया

There, while roaming in the form of a deer, I was seen by the gods.
