Varaha Purana

परमेष्ठिगुणैर्युक्तो लघुवद्भीतितः पुरा । नमस्कं कुरुते मोघं पृथिव्यां पद्मजः स्वयम् ।। २१.

'Though endowed with the virtues of the Supreme Lord, formerly, out of fear, even the self-born Lotus-born one offered futile salutations on earth.'

एवमुक्त्वा गरुत्मन्तमारुरोह हरिस्तदा । शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिः पीतवासा जनार्दनः ।। २१.

Having spoken thus, Hari, clad in yellow garments, holding conch, discus, and mace in his hands, the sustainer of the people, then mounted Garuda.

ततो हरिहरं युद्धमभवल्लोमहर्षणम् । रुद्रः पाशुपतास्त्रेण विव्याध हरिमोजसा । हरिर्नारायणास्त्रेण रुद्रं विव्याध कोपवान् ।। २१.

Then there arose a hair-raising battle between Hari and Hara; Rudra struck Hari with the Pashupata weapon with great force, and Hari, enraged, struck Rudra with the Narayana weapon.

नारायणं पाशुपतमुभेऽस्त्रे व्योम्नि रोषिते । युयुधाते भृशं दिव्यं परस्परजिघांसया । दिव्यं वर्षसहस्त्रं तु तयोर्युद्धमभूत् तदा ।। २१.

Both the Narayana and Pashupata weapons, released in anger, clashed in the sky; the two fought fiercely, each intent on destroying the other, and their divine battle lasted a thousand years.

तत्रैकं मुकुटोद्बद्धं मूर्द्धन्यं जटजालकम् । एकं प्रध्मापयच्छङ्खमन्यडुमरुकं शुभम् ।। २१.

There, one wore a crown adorned with matted locks upon his head; one blew a conch, while the other sounded a beautiful drum.

एकं खङ्गकरं तत्र तथाऽन्यं दण्डधारिणम् । एकं कौस्तुभदीप्ताङ्गमन्यं भूतिविभूषितम् ।। २१.

One held a sword in his hand, the other bore a staff; one’s body shone with the Kaustubha gem, the other was adorned with sacred ashes.

एकं गदां भ्रामयति द्वितीयं दण्डमेव च । एकं शोभति कण्ठस्थैर्मणिभिस्त्वस्थिभिः परम् । एकं पीताम्बरं तत्र द्वितीयं सर्पमेखलम् ।। २१.

One whirled a mace, the other a staff; one’s neck gleamed with jewels, the other with bones; one was clad in yellow garments, the other wore a serpent as a belt.

एवं तौ स्पर्द्धिनावस्त्रौ रौद्रनारायणात्मकौ । अन्योऽन्यातिशयोपेतौ तदालोक्य पितामहः ।। २१.

Thus, those two, fierce and rivalrous, embodying Rudra and Narayana, each surpassing the other, were beheld by the Grandfather (Brahma).

उवाच शाम्यतामस्त्रौ स्वस्वभावेन सुव्रतौ । एवं ते ब्रह्मणा चोक्तौ शान्तभावं प्रजग्मतुः ।। २१.

He said, 'Let the weapons be withdrawn, O virtuous ones, each according to his own nature.' Thus addressed by Brahma, they both became peaceful.

तथा विष्णुहरौ ब्रह्मा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह । उभौ हरिहरौ देवौ लोके ख्यातिं गमिष्यथः ।। २१.

Then Brahma spoke these words to Vishnu and Hara: 'Both of you, Hari and Hara, will become renowned in the world as gods.'

अयं च यज्ञो विध्वस्तः संपूर्णत्वं गमिष्यति । दक्षस्य ख्यातिमाँल्लोकः संतत्याऽयं भविष्यति ।। २१.

'This sacrifice, though disrupted, will reach completion; the world will gain fame through Daksha and his lineage.'

एवमुक्त्वा हरिहरौ तदा लोकपितामहः । ब्रह्मा लोकानुवाचेदं रुद्रभागोऽस्य दीयताम् ।। २१.

Having spoken thus to Hari and Hara, the Grandfather of the worlds, Brahma, addressed the assembly: 'Let Rudra’s share be given to him.'

रुद्रभागो ज्येष्ठभाग इतीयं वैदिकी श्रुतिः । स्तुतिं च देवाः कुरुत रुद्रस्य परमेष्ठि नः ।। २१.

'Rudra’s share is the foremost portion—so declares the Vedic revelation. O gods, offer praise to Rudra, our supreme lord.'

भगनेत्रहरं देवं पूष्णो दन्तविनाशनम् । स्तुतिं कुरुतमा शीघ्रं गीतैरेतैस्तु नामभिः । येनायं वः प्रसन्नात्मा वरदत्वं भजेत ह ।। २१.

'Praise the god who destroyed Bhaga’s eye and Pūṣan’s teeth, quickly offer hymns with these names, so that, pleased in spirit, he may grant you boons.'

एवमुक्तास्तु ते देवाः स्तोत्रं शंभोर्महात्मनः । चक्रुः परमया भक्त्या नमस्कृत्य स्वयंभुवे ।। २१.

Thus addressed, the gods, with utmost devotion, offered hymns of praise to the great-souled Shambhu, bowing to the self-born one.

देवा ऊचुः । नमो विषमनेत्राय नमस्ते त्र्यम्बकाय च । नमः सहस्त्रनेत्राय नमस्ते शूलपाणये ।। २१.

The gods said: 'Salutations to the one with the fierce eye, salutations to you, Three-eyed One; salutations to the thousand-eyed, salutations to you who hold the trident.'

नमः खट्वाङ्गहस्ताय नमो दण्डभृते करे । त्वं देव हुतभुग्ज्वालाकोटिभानुसमप्रभः ।। २१.

Salutations to you who hold the skull-staff, salutations to you who bear the rod in your hand; O god, your brilliance equals the blaze of a million suns and fires.

अदर्शनेऽनयद् देव मूढविज्ञानतोऽधुना । कृतमस्माभिरेवेश तदत्र क्षम्यतां प्रभो ।। २१.

O god, through ignorance and lack of discernment, we have acted wrongly; forgive us, O lord, for this offense.

नमस्त्रिनेत्रार्त्तिहराय शंभो त्रिशूलपाणे विकृतास्यरूप । समस्तदेवेश्वर शुद्धभाव प्रसीद रुद्राच्युत सर्वभाव ।। २१.

Salutations to the three-eyed remover of suffering, O Shambhu, trident-bearer, of fearsome face and form; lord of all gods, of pure nature, be gracious, O Rudra, imperishable one, all-pervading.

पूष्णोऽस्य दन्तान्तक भीमरूप प्रलम्बभोगीन्द्रलुलन्तकण्ठ । विशालदेहाच्युत नीलकण्ठ प्रसीद विश्वेश्वर विश्वमूर्त्ते ।। २१.

O fierce-toothed Pūṣan, terrifying in form, whose neck is adorned by the serpent Pralamba, whose body is vast, O Achyuta, O blue-throated one, be gracious, Lord of all, embodiment of the universe.

भगाक्षिसंस्फोटनदक्षकर्मा गृहाण भागं मखतः प्रधानम् । प्रसीद देवेश्वर नीलकण्ठ प्रपाहि नः सर्वगुणोपपन्न ।। २१.

O performer of Daksha's sacrifice, whose eyes flash like Bhaga's, accept the principal share of the sacrifice; be gracious, Lord of the gods, O blue-throated one, protect us, endowed with all virtues.

सिताङ्गरागाप्रतिपन्नमूर्त्ते कपालधारिंस्त्रिपुरघ्न देव । प्रपाहि नः सर्वभयेषु चैव उमापते पुष्करनालजन्म ।। २१.

O deity whose form is adorned with white sandal paste, bearer of the skull, destroyer of the three cities, protect us from every danger, O consort of Uma, born from the lotus stalk.

पश्याम ते देहगतान् सुरेश सर्गादयो वेदवराननन्त । साङ्गान् सविद्यान् सपदक्रमांश्च सर्वान् निलीनांस्त्वयि देवदेव ।। २१.

O Lord of the gods, we see within your body the origins of creation and the Vedas, complete with their limbs, knowledge, and verses—all absorbed in you, O God of gods.

भव शर्व महादेव पिनाकिन् रुद्र ते हर । नताः स्म सर्वे विश्वेश त्राहि नः परमेश्वर ।। २१.

O Bhava, Śarva, Mahādeva, wielder of the bow, Rudra, Hara, we all bow to you, Lord of all; protect us, Supreme Lord.

इत्थं स्तुतस्तदा देवैर्देवदेवो महेश्वरः । तुतोष सर्वदेवानां वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ।। २१.

Thus praised by the gods, the great Lord of gods, Maheśvara, was pleased and spoke these words to all the gods.

रुद्र उवाच । भगस्य नेत्रं भवतु पूष्णो दन्तास्तथा मखः । दक्षस्याच्छिद्रतां यातु यज्ञश्चाप्यदितेः सुताः । पशुभावं तथा चापि अपनेष्यामि वो सुराः ।। २१.

Rudra said: Let Bhaga's eye be restored, Pūṣan's teeth as well, and the sacrifice of Daksha be made whole; let the sons of Aditi regain their status, and I will remove the animal nature from you, O gods.

मद्दर्शनेन यो जातः पशुभावो दिवौकसाम् । स मयाऽपहृतः सद्यः पतित्वं वो भविष्यति ।। २१.

The animal nature that arose among the gods from seeing me has been taken away by me; you shall be freed from it immediately.

अहं च सर्वविद्यानां पतिराद्यः सनातनः । अहं वै पतिभावेन पशुमध्ये व्यवस्थितः ।। २१.

I am the eternal, original lord of all knowledge; I am established as the master among animals by virtue of lordship.

अतः पशुपतिर्नाम मम लोके भविष्यति । ये मां यजन्ति तेषां स्याद् दीक्षा पाशुपती भवेत् ।। २१.

Therefore, my name in the world shall be Paśupati; those who worship me shall have the Paśupati initiation.
