जन्मान्तरसहस्रेषु समाराध्य वृषध्वजम्
After worshipping the Lord with the bull-banner through thousands of births—
पापक्षयमवाप्नोति चेश्वराराधने कृते
One attains the destruction of sin when the Lord has been worshipped.
मामाराध्य तथा याति तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम् 211.
Having worshipped me in this way, one attains that supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
संस्मृतः कीर्तितो वापि दृष्टः स्पृष्टोऽपि वा प्रिये
Whether remembered, praised, seen, or even touched, O beloved—
एतज्ज्ञात्वा तु विद्वद्भिः पूजनीयो जनार्दनः
Knowing this, the wise should worship Janārdana.
यम उवाच समाराध्य जगन्नाथं विधिना तल्लयङ्गता
Yama said: Having worshipped the Lord of the universe according to rule, they become absorbed in Him.
तेषां नैवास्त्ययं लोको यान्ति तत्परमं पदम्
For them, this world does not exist; they go to that supreme abode.
प्रबोधनाख्यां सुधियस्ते यांति परमं पदम्
Those wise ones, known as awakened, go to the supreme abode.
पश्यंति द्विजशार्दूल इति सत्यं मयोदितम्
O best of twice-born, what I have spoken is indeed true.
कथितं मे महाभाग यत्त्वया परिपृच्छितम्
O most fortunate one, I have explained what you asked me.
तत्ते सर्वं समासेन व्याख्यातं धर्मवत्सल
All that you inquired has been summarized and expounded for you, O lover of righteousness.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे पापनाशोपायवर्णनं नामैकादशाधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the two hundred and eleventh chapter, entitled 'Description of the Means for Destroying Sin,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.
अथ संसारचक्रोपाख्याने प्रबोधनीयवर्णनम् साधु साधु महाराज सर्वधर्मविदां वर
Now, in the account of the wheel of worldly existence, the description of awakening: Excellent, excellent, O great king, foremost among those who know all dharmas.
अतोऽहमपि सुप्रीतस्तव धर्मपथे स्थितः
Therefore, I am very pleased, as you stand firmly on the path of dharma.
त्वयाहं चैव राजेन्द्र पूजितश्च विशेषतः
O king of kings, you have honored me especially.
स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु महाराज त्वकम्पो भव सुव्रत
May blessings be upon you, O great king; be steadfast, O virtuous one.
तेजसा द्योतयन्सर्वं गगनं भास्करो यथा
Radiating with brilliance, illuminating everything like the sun in the sky.
गते तस्मिंस्तु सुचिरं स राजा धर्मवत्सलः
When he departed, after a long time, that king, devoted to dharma—
कृत्वा पूजां च मे युक्तां प्रियमुक्त्वा च सुव्रत
Having performed proper worship for me and spoken kindly, O steadfast one—
एतद्वः कथितं विप्रास्तस्य राज्ञः पुरोत्तमे
This has been told to you, O brahmins, in the presence of that foremost king.
वैशंपायन उवाच केचिद्वैखानसास्तत्र केचिदासन्निरासनाः
Vaiśampāyana said: Some were Vaikhānasa ascetics there, some were engaged in sitting and non-sitting practices.
साधु साध्विति चैवोक्त्वा विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनाः 212.
Having exclaimed 'Excellent, excellent,' their eyes widened in astonishment.
शालानीश्च तथा केचित्कापोतीवृत्तिमास्थिताः
Some were Śālānī ascetics, others lived like pigeons.
शिलोंच्छाश्च तथैवान्ये काष्ठान्ताश्च महौजसः
Others lived by gathering grains, and some, of great energy, subsisted on wood.
नानाविधिधराः केचिज्जितात्मानस्तु केचन
Some followed various disciplines, and some were self-controlled.
तथोर्द्ध्वशायिकाश्चान्ये तथान्ये मृगचारिणः
Likewise, some slept upright, and others roamed like deer.
अब्भक्षा वायुभक्षाश्च तथान्ये शाकभक्षिणः
Some subsisted on water, some on air, and others ate only vegetables.
तपसोऽन्यन्न चास्तीति चिन्तयित्वा पुनः पुनः
Reflecting again and again that there is nothing else but austerity,
त्यक्त्वा धर्ममधर्मं च शाश्वतीं धियमास्थिताः
They abandoned both righteousness and unrighteousness, and remained steadfast in eternal contemplation.
जगृहुर्नियमांस्तांस्तान्भयहेतोरनिन्दिताः
Blameless, they undertook various disciplines out of fear.
