And those men, O Lord, who are engaged in these and other sins,
Śrī Varāha said: I will tell you a secret, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
Those men who are associated with great sins and devoid of merit,
That is the supreme, unmanifest, and multiform power of Viṣṇu.
O blessed one, those men who are greatly devoted to sin should observe it.
O Earth, there is truly no other means besides this.
Just as the bright fortnight, so too the dark fortnight—both should be observed with effort.
Therefore, with all diligence, the Dvādaśī should always be performed.
What is acquired by mind, speech, and deed—
O beautiful-faced one, it burns away ancient sins again and again in this world.
If you men wish to reach that supreme abode of Viṣṇu,
With arms raised, I declare—listen to this instruction of mine.
One should not drink water with a conch, nor kill fish or boars.
He is a murderer of a brāhmaṇa, a drinker of liquor, a thief, and one who approaches his teacher’s wife.
What sin has not been committed by that wicked self-destroyer?
And he who is unable to observe the bright Ekādaśī—
The vow of Dvādaśī should be performed with a single meal and with charity.
He becomes one who partakes of great sins and never attains a good destination anywhere.
That one Dvādaśī is meritorious; it should be observed as Prabodhinī.
He obtains all the fruits of the twelve Dvādaśīs.
On that day, whatever is done becomes exceedingly great and imperishable here.
Then one obtains merit a crore-fold and the reward beloved of Keśava.
Just as the holy Prabodhini is sacred, so too is that night on which Hari sleeps.
Whether in lying down, awakening, or even turning over, all pertain to Hari.
Therefore, one should observe the Dvādaśī fast with all effort.
O beautiful one, the Ekādaśī that falls with the moon in the month of Kārttika—
Whatever is performed on that day, O auspicious one, is remembered as having infinite merit.
Having bathed and worshipped the deity, one attains the highest reward.
The wise should place a water-filled pot,
and upon it, place Janārdana in the form of a fish.
