All the sin accumulated throughout life is destroyed at that very moment.
A man who bathes three times is freed from all sins.
In the bright fortnight of Kārtika, the eleventh lunar day is declared.
That is the supreme, unmanifest, and multiform embodiment of Viṣṇu.
Those devoted to Nārāyaṇa who observe it properly by the rules,
Having taken refuge in the Ekādaśī, long ago Mahādeva was asked,
The Earth said: Those who are engaged in stealing Brahman’s wealth and in killing Brāhmaṇas,
O Lord, those who betray their teacher or friend,
And those who are involved in taking the property of others, O Lord of the gods,
The hypocrites, those who transgress boundaries, and those who say 'there is no justice',
And those men, O Lord, who are engaged in these and other sins,
Śrī Varāha said: I will tell you a secret, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
Those men who are associated with great sins and devoid of merit,
That is the supreme, unmanifest, and multiform power of Viṣṇu.
O blessed one, those men who are greatly devoted to sin should observe it.
O Earth, there is truly no other means besides this.
Just as the bright fortnight, so too the dark fortnight—both should be observed with effort.
Therefore, with all diligence, the Dvādaśī should always be performed.
What is acquired by mind, speech, and deed—
O beautiful-faced one, it burns away ancient sins again and again in this world.
If you men wish to reach that supreme abode of Viṣṇu,
With arms raised, I declare—listen to this instruction of mine.
One should not drink water with a conch, nor kill fish or boars.
He is a murderer of a brāhmaṇa, a drinker of liquor, a thief, and one who approaches his teacher’s wife.
What sin has not been committed by that wicked self-destroyer?
And he who is unable to observe the bright Ekādaśī—
The vow of Dvādaśī should be performed with a single meal and with charity.
He becomes one who partakes of great sins and never attains a good destination anywhere.
That one Dvādaśī is meritorious; it should be observed as Prabodhinī.
He obtains all the fruits of the twelve Dvādaśīs.
