शूलपाणिं विरूपाक्षं सर्वप्राणिप्रणाशनम्

beheld the trident-wielder, with deformed eyes, the destroyer of all living beings.

खादन्ति चैव घ्नन्ति स्म चित्रगुप्तेन चोदिताः 201.

Urged on by Citragupta, they began to devour and strike.

वयमद्य महाभाग त्रायस्व जगतः पते

Today, O greatly fortunate one, protect us, Lord of the world.

ज्वरः क्रुद्धो महातेजा योधानां तु सहस्रशः

Fever, enraged and of great brilliance, attacked thousands of warriors.

विविधान्सन्दिदेशाऽत्र पुरुषानग्निवर्चसः

He dispatched here various men, blazing like fire.

पच शीघ्रमिमान्पापान्योगेन च बलेन च

Burn these sinners quickly, with your power and might.

ज्वराज्ञया च ते सर्वे जीमूतघननिःस्वनाः

By Fever’s command, all of them, roaring like thunderclouds,

बहुशस्त्रप्रहारैश्च शस्त्रैश्च विविधोज्ज्वलैः

with many blows of weapons and with various shining arms,

मोचयामास संग्रामं स्वयमेव यमस्ततः

Yama himself then released the battle.

गत्वा ज्वरं महाभागं विनयात्सान्त्वयन्मुहुः

Going to the mighty Fever, he repeatedly appeased and soothed him with respect.

प्रविवेश गृहं स्वं तु सम्भ्रमेणेदृशेन तु

Then, in such confusion, he entered his own house.

धर्मराजोऽथ विश्रान्तं कालभूतं महाज्वरम् 201.

Then the Lord of Dharma, having rested, approached Kāla, the great Fever.

रोषायासकरं चैव सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः

He, honored by all the worlds, was the cause of anger and exhaustion.

शासेमहि यथाकामं यथादृष्टं यथाश्रुतम्

We shall rule as we wish, as we have seen, and as we have heard.

लोकान्सर्वानहं हन्मि सर्वघाती न संशयः

I destroy all the worlds; I am the slayer of all—there is no doubt.

राक्षसानां हतास्तत्र षष्टिकोट्यो रणाजिरे

There, sixty million Rākṣasas were slain on the battlefield.

ततो ह्युपरतं युद्धं धर्मराजो यमः स्वयम्

Then the battle ceased, and Dharmarāja Yama himself—

सम्भाषन्ते ततो दूताश्चित्रगुप्तं तथैव च

Then the messengers spoke with Citragupta as well.

स्वकर्मगुणभूतानि ह्यशुभानि शुभानि च

Indeed, both unwholesome and wholesome deeds, which are formed by the qualities of one's actions—

उपस्थानं च कुर्वन्ति कालचिंतकमब्रुवन्

They present themselves and spoke to Kāla-cintaka.

तदैवोत्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतां प्रभो

"Now arise! Stand! Forgive, forgive, O Lord!"

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे संसारचक्रे राक्षसकिंकरयुद्धं नामैकाधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus, in the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa, in the divine scripture, in the cycle of transmigration, this is the two hundred and first chapter, named 'The Battle of Rākṣasas and Servants.'

अथ नारकिदण्डनकर्मविपाकवर्णनम् विस्मयस्तु मया दृष्टस्तस्मिन्नद्भुतदर्शनः

Now, the description of the results of the punishments of hell: I beheld a wonder there, a marvelous sight.

प्राप्नुवन्ति फलं ते वै ये च क्षिप्ताः पुरा जनाः

Those people who were cast there before, indeed, receive their fruits.

सन्तप्ता बहवो ये ते तैस्तैः कर्मभिरुल्बणैः

Many are tormented there by those various dreadful actions.

दुराचारं पापरतं निर्घृणं पापचेतसम्

Those of evil conduct, devoted to sin, merciless, and wicked-minded—

पितृघ्नो मातृगोघ्नस्तु सर्वदोषसमन्वितः

A slayer of father, mother, or cow, possessed of all faults—

एनं पाचय तैलस्य घृतक्षौद्रस्य वा पुनः ६ !। नराधममिमं क्षिप्त्वा प्रदीप्ते हव्यवाहने

Cast this lowest of men into blazing fire, and cook him in oil, or again in ghee and honey.

शयनासनहर्त्तारमग्निदायी च यो नरः

The man who steals beds or seats, or who gives fire—
