Citragupta, mighty-armed and mindful of the welfare of all worlds,
Then those Rākṣasas, of various appearances and flesh-eating,
Wearing armor of bound iguana skin and bearing various weapons,
Again, rejoicing, they spoke: 'Command swiftly, O Lord!'
Hearing their words, Citragupta spoke:
'Ho, ho! Brave Mandehakas, guardians of my will!'
'Thus, having slain and bound them, return again as before.'
'Having slain those evildoers who act contrary to my wishes,'
The rākṣasas said: The ministers alone should be recognized as servants, though they number in the hundreds of thousands.
These have been designated for destruction by you yourself, O great-souled one.
For just as these have arisen, they all contemplate righteousness.
Let there not be a false promise from you, who are devoted to righteousness.
Rescue us, O hero, your mighty attendants.
Having spoken thus, then the terrible diseases, able to assume any form at will,
Some with elephants, others with horses, and also with chariots, mighty in strength,
Others with deer, jackals, buffaloes, tigers, and sheep,
Thus equipped with various vehicles, brandishing diverse weapons,
With the tumult of drums, trumpets, and the clamor of warriors,
Then a battle arose in that deep darkness.
The earth was illumined by severed heads adorned with earrings.
With blows from spears, javelins, staffs, tomaras, and swords,
A dreadful, tumultuous, and hair-raising battle took place.
Then, with arms entwined, they engaged in fierce hand-to-hand combat, seizing each other's hair.
Then those rākṣasas were broken by messengers of terrible valor.
Those piśācas, being slain, retreated from the battlefield, afflicted by war.
"Stop, stop! Where are you going?" "I will not go; stand firm!"
But, fool, you did not hurl a weapon at me that could cause me pain.
What are you saying, O wicked-minded one? It is I who have crossed over in battle.
There, suddenly, terrifying flesh-eating Rākṣasas appeared before you.
Then, when your shape-shifting Rākṣasas were broken,
