कुलेषु सुदरिद्रेषु सञ्जाताः पापकर्मिणः 198.
Born in extremely poor families, they are doers of evil deeds.
वृत्तस्था भुञ्जते हेमांश्चातुर्वर्ण्यान्विशेषतः
Those who remain upright enjoy gold, especially among the four castes.
इह विश्राम्य ते धीराः किंचित्कालं सहानुगाः
Here, the steadfast ones rest for a while, accompanied by their followers.
बहुसुन्दरनारीके समृद्धे सुसमाहिताः
They are settled among many beautiful women in prosperity, with full concentration.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे संसारचक्र यातनानां स्वरूपवर्णनं नामाष्टनवत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Varaha Purana, in the divine scripture, is the chapter called 'Description of the Forms of the Torments of the Cycle of Samsara', being the one hundred and ninety-eighth.
पुनः संसारचक्रयातनास्वरूपवर्णनम् तस्मिन् क्षितितलं सर्वमायसैः कण्टकैश्चितम्
Again, the description of the forms of the torments of the cycle of samsara: there, the whole earth is covered with illusory thorns.
अथान्ये छिन्नपादास्तु छिन्नपाणिशिरोधराः
Then, others have severed feet, severed hands, heads, and necks.
ये तु धर्मरता दाता वपुष्मन्तो यथा गृहे
Those who are devoted to righteousness, generous, and handsome, as in their homes—
याचमानाः स्थिता नित्यं सुशीतैस्तोयभोजनैः
Those who stand asking, always with cool water and food.
कृत्वा पूजां परां तत्र प्रतीक्षन्ते परं जनम्
Having performed supreme worship there, they await other people.
आलोके च प्रदर्श्यन्ते वृक्षाश्च भुवनानि च
In the light, trees and worlds are shown.
तत्र गत्वा तु ते दूताः प्रविशन्ति सुदारुणाः
Having gone there, those messengers enter, exceedingly fierce.
अथान्ये तु श्वभिर्घोरैरापादतलमस्तकम्
Then others, with fierce dogs, are devoured from the soles of their feet to the crown of their heads.
अथान्ये तु महारूपा महादंष्ट्रा भयानकाः
Then others, of enormous form, with great fangs, terrifying in appearance—
अन्नानि दीयमानानि भक्ष्याणि विविधानि च 199.
—even when various foods and delicacies are given to them—
अयःशरमयी नारी वह्नितप्ता सुदारुणा
A woman made of iron arrows, heated in fire, exceedingly dreadful,
धावन्तं चानुधावंती त्विदं वचनमब्रवीत्
pursues the fleeing man, and as she chases him, she speaks these words:
मातृष्वसा ते दुर्बुद्धे मातुलानी पितृष्वसा
"Your mother's sister, O wicked-minded one, your maternal uncle's wife, your father's sister—
श्रोत्रियाणां द्विजातीनां जाया वै धर्षितास्त्वया
—the wives of learned Brāhmaṇas and twice-born men—you have violated them."
किं प्रधावसि निर्लज्ज व्यसनैश्चोपपादितः
"Why do you run, shameless one, afflicted by your own vices?"
एवं वै बोधयन्तीह श्रावयन्ति पुनःपुनः
Thus, instructing him in this way, she makes him hear it again and again.
ज्ञानिनां च सहस्रेषु जातं जातं तथा स्त्रियः
Among thousands of the wise, such women are born again and again.
वृषलीर्बहुलैर्दुःखैः किं क्रन्दसि पुनः पुनः
"Why do you cry out again and again, O wretch, suffering many torments from low-born women?"
दशधा त्वं मया पाप नीयमानः पुनःपुनः
"Tenfold, O sinner, I shall drag you again and again."
न मोक्ष्यसे मया पाप कुतो गच्छसि मूढ वै 199.
"You will not be released by me, O sinner; where do you think you are going, truly deluded one?"
तत्र तत्रैव पाप त्वां न त्यक्ष्ये पारदारिकम्
"Wherever you go, O sinner, I will not abandon you, adulterer."
गोपाला इव दण्डेन कालयन्तो मुहुर्मुहुः
Like cowherds with sticks, they drive him on again and again.
भक्ष्यन्ते श्वापदैरन्यैः श्वभिः काकैस्तथाऽपरे
He is devoured by other beasts of prey, by dogs, and by crows as well.
दावाग्निसदृशाकारं प्रदीप्तं सर्वतोऽर्चिषा
He sees a blazing fire, resembling a forest conflagration, with flames on every side.
दह्यमानान्सुतप्तांश्च संश्रयन्ते द्रुमान्पुनः
Burned and scorched, they again take refuge under trees.
