Varaha Purana

भो देव पाहि मुञ्चेति वदन्तः पुरुषं वचः 198.

They cry out, 'O Lord, protect, release!' speaking these words to the man.

पाषाणवर्षैः केचित्तु पांसुवर्षैश्च विद्रुताः

Some flee, struck by showers of stones and showers of dust.

द्रवन्ति च पुनस्तत्र दूतैश्चापि दृढं हताः

And again there, they run, and are firmly struck by the messengers.

वारिपूर्णं ततः कुम्भं शीतलं च जलं पुनः

Then a pot filled with water, and again cool water,

ततः पानीयरूपेण जलं तप्तं तु दीयते

Then, in the form of drinking water, hot water is given.

आलिङ्ग्यालिङ्ग्य दुःखार्त्ताः केचित्तत्र पतन्ति वै

Some, afflicted by sorrow, embrace each other and fall there.

अन्नानां च सुमिष्टानां भक्ष्याणां च विशेषतः

And of foods, especially the most delicious and edible ones,

दधिक्षीररसांश्चैव कृसरान्पायसं तथा

Curds, milk, juices, as well as rice and sweet porridge,

माध्वीकस्य च पानस्य सीधोर्जातीरसस्य च

And drinks of honey, liquor, and jasmine rice,

गोरसस्य च पानानि भाजनानि च नित्यशः

Drinks made from cow's milk, and vessels for them, always,

माल्यानि धूपं गन्धाश्च नानारससमायुताः 198.

Garlands, incense, and fragrances, all endowed with various scents.

भोजनेषु च सर्वेषु स्त्रियः कान्ता मनोहराः

Among all the foods, charming and lovely women,

फलानि कुण्डहस्ताश्च पात्रहस्तास्तथापराः

Fruits held in bowls, and others holding vessels in their hands.

अन्नदानरताश्चैव भोजयन्ति सहस्रशः

Those devoted to giving food provide meals to thousands.

उपस्थाप्य महायोग्यमत्र काले च योषितः

At this time, they arrange for highly capable women to be present.

निघ्नन्तश्च हसन्तश्च दूता निष्ठुरवादिनः

Messengers, harsh in speech, kill and laugh.

पापाशया निष्कृतिकाः सर्वदानविवर्जिताः

With sinful intentions, they are devoid of any means of atonement and always lack generosity.

निर्लज्जा गृहका देया याचितुं मनसा हिताः

Shameless housewives are given, favorable for requesting with the mind.

पानीयमथ काष्ठानि यद्यन्नं सुखमागतम्

Water, firewood, and whatever food comes easily are provided.

कुलेषु सुदरिद्रेषु सञ्जाताः पापकर्मिणः 198.

Born in extremely poor families, they are doers of evil deeds.

वृत्तस्था भुञ्जते हेमांश्चातुर्वर्ण्यान्विशेषतः

Those who remain upright enjoy gold, especially among the four castes.

इह विश्राम्य ते धीराः किंचित्कालं सहानुगाः

Here, the steadfast ones rest for a while, accompanied by their followers.

बहुसुन्दरनारीके समृद्धे सुसमाहिताः

They are settled among many beautiful women in prosperity, with full concentration.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे संसारचक्र यातनानां स्वरूपवर्णनं नामाष्टनवत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus, in the glorious Varaha Purana, in the divine scripture, is the chapter called 'Description of the Forms of the Torments of the Cycle of Samsara', being the one hundred and ninety-eighth.

पुनः संसारचक्रयातनास्वरूपवर्णनम् तस्मिन् क्षितितलं सर्वमायसैः कण्टकैश्चितम्

Again, the description of the forms of the torments of the cycle of samsara: there, the whole earth is covered with illusory thorns.

अथान्ये छिन्नपादास्तु छिन्नपाणिशिरोधराः

Then, others have severed feet, severed hands, heads, and necks.

ये तु धर्मरता दाता वपुष्मन्तो यथा गृहे

Those who are devoted to righteousness, generous, and handsome, as in their homes—

याचमानाः स्थिता नित्यं सुशीतैस्तोयभोजनैः

Those who stand asking, always with cool water and food.

कृत्वा पूजां परां तत्र प्रतीक्षन्ते परं जनम्

Having performed supreme worship there, they await other people.
