पौरुषेण समायुक्ताः सर्वलोकनयायताः
Endowed with manliness, they afflict all the worlds.
महासत्त्वो महातेजाः जरामरणवर्जितः
Of great strength and great brilliance, he is free from old age and death.
गायका हासकाश्चैव सर्वजीवप्रबोधकाः
There were singers and laughers, awakeners of all living beings.
दिव्याभरणशोभाभिः शोभमानाः सुतेजसः
Radiant in their splendor, they shone with the beauty of divine ornaments.
पर्यास्तरणसंछन्नेष्वासनेषु तथा परे
Elsewhere, seats were covered with various kinds of spread cloths.
अनेकाश्च नरास्तत्र वेदनाश्च सुदारुणाः
There were also many men there, and torments of great severity.
कामक्रोधविचारिण्यो नानारूपधराः स्त्रियः 197.
Women, acting under the sway of desire and anger, appeared in many different forms.
तासां हलहलाशब्दः सर्वासां च समन्ततः
The loud tumultuous noise of all those women resounded on every side.
कूष्माण्डा यातुधानाश्च राक्षसाः पिशिताशनाः
There were also ghouls, fiends, and flesh-eating demons.
एकबाहुर्द्विबाहुश्च त्रिबाहुर्बहुबाहुकः
Some had one arm, some two, some three, and some had many arms.
केचित्तु तत्र पुरुषाः सर्वशोभाविशोभिताः
But there were also men there, adorned with every kind of splendor.
स्रग्विणो बद्धपादाश्च सर्वाभरणभूषिताः
Wearing garlands, their feet bound, and adorned with all kinds of ornaments.
सशक्तितोमराः केचित्सधनुष्का दुरासदाः
Some held spears and javelins, others were armed with bows, difficult to approach.
सज्जिता दधिहस्ताश्च गन्धहस्ता ह्यनेकशः
Some stood ready, holding curds in their hands, and many bore fragrant substances.
धूपान्प्रगृह्य विविधान्वासांसि शुभदर्शनाः
Holding various kinds of incense, they wore garments of auspicious appearance.
वाजिकुञ्जरयुक्तानि हंसयुक्तानि चापरे
Some had vehicles drawn by horses and elephants, others by swans.
मयूरैः सारसैश्चैव चक्रवाकैश्च वाजिभिः 197.
And others had steeds in the form of peacocks, cranes, and chakravaka birds.
उज्ज्वला मलिनाश्चैव जीर्णवस्त्रा नवांशुकाः
Some were bright, some dirty, some in worn-out clothes, and others in new silk.
समार्जारी काचवर्णा कृष्णा चैव कलिस्तथा
There were those with cat-like, glassy, and black complexions, and also the figure of Kali.
एते पुरोगमास्तत्र कृतान्तस्य महात्मनः
These are the forerunners there of the great-souled Death.
नमस्कार्याश्च पूज्याश्च आपन्नेन हि नित्यशः
They are always to be saluted and honored by one who is afflicted.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे संसारचक्रे कृतान्तकालमृत्युकिङ्करवर्णनं नाम सप्तनवत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and ninety-seventh chapter, entitled 'Description of the Attendants of Death in the Wheel of Samsara,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.
अथ संसारचक्रयातनास्वरूपवर्णनम् मामेकमृषभं तत्र दर्शनं च ददौ यमः
Now, the description of the true nature of the torments of the cycle of worldly existence: There, Yama granted me the vision of a single bull.
याथातथ्येन मे पूजा कार्येण विधिनाऽकरोत्
He performed my worship exactly as prescribed, with the proper ritual.
अब्रवीच्च पुनर्हृष्टो ह्यास्यतां च वरासने
Then, delighted, he spoke again: 'Be seated on the seat of honor.'
तस्य वक्त्रं महारौद्रं नित्यमेव भयानकम्
His face was exceedingly fierce, always truly terrifying.
लोहिते तस्य वै नेत्रे जल्पतश्च पुनःपुनः
His eyes were blood-red, and he kept speaking again and again.
ततोऽहं तस्य भावेन भावितश्च पुनःपुनः
Then, because of his demeanor, I was repeatedly filled with emotion.
तस्य प्रीतिकरं सद्यः सर्वदोषविनाशनम्
Immediately, I recited a hymn pleasing to him, which destroys all faults.
कालवृद्धिकरं स्तोत्रं क्षिप्रं तत्र उदीरयन्
That hymn, which brings about longevity and quickly removes the effects of time, I uttered there.
