There, no formal resolve is needed; one should address the ancestors, O beautiful one.
The wise should recite mantras for warding off evil spirits.
After giving an upper garment and a seat, one should perform the piṇḍa inquiry.
One should offer piṇḍas to the three generations, beginning with the father.
And one should give, with self-control, into the hand of a brāhmaṇa, that which is inexhaustible.
As long as the three balls of rice remain on the earth,
Having purified himself by touching water and becoming clean, he should offer the waters of appeasement.
The waters are known by the names Vaiṣṇavī, Kāśyapī, and Akṣayā.
He should offer the third water at the śrāddha; thus is the rite declared.
By such giving, the ancestors and the gods are satisfied—of this there is no doubt.
One should offer the śrāddha according to rule to brāhmaṇas who are excellent in knowledge.
If a twice-born performs śrāddha lacking in mantras or proper rites,
Or if a brāhmaṇa devoid of knowledge lifts the vessel,
Thus, O blessed one, I have described to you the unsurpassed rite for the ancestors.
And now, O Earth, what else do you wish to hear?
Thus ends the one hundred and ninetieth chapter, entitled 'The Determination of the Śrāddha and Ancestor Rite,' in the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
Now, the section on the origin, offering, and mixing of madhuparka: Having thus heard many dharmas, ascertained from the treatises on dharma,
The Earth said: Though I have heard much and often, I am not yet satisfied.
For my own benefit, you should speak the secret.
Tell me, what substances are to be given, and to whom?
The Lord, in the form of Varāha, replied to the Earth.
Śrī Varāha said: The origin and the offering, and whatever is diminished thereby—
I, along with Brahma and Rudra, bring about the dissolution of the world.
Then, from the southern part of my body, a person emerged, O Earth.
There, Brahma, who had arisen from my body, questioned me.
O god, this is subtle and light; it does not suit you.
Thus, he was born from me, established in all actions.
Here, O Brahman, I have resolved this, and likewise for Rudra.
The origin of the madhuparka and the certainty of its self-born nature.
What is to be done with the madhuparka? Tell me this, without omission.
