स्नानोपलेपनं भूमे कृत्वा विप्रान्प्रमन्त्रयेत्
After bathing and anointing the body with earth, one should invite the Brāhmaṇas with mantras.
यत्नेन मिथुनं श्राद्धे भोजयित्वा विसर्ज्जयेत्
With care, after feeding a married couple at the śrāddha, one should let them go.
अमायां तु च यो मूर्खो दन्तकाष्ठं हि खादति
But the fool who chews a tooth-stick on the new moon day—
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यामुदिते च दिवाकरे
When the night has passed and the sun has risen—
श्मश्रुकर्म च कर्त्तव्यं नखानां छेदनानि च
One should perform shaving and the cutting of nails.
पक्वान्नं तत्र वै कार्यं सुविमृष्टं च शुद्धितः
There, one should prepare well-cooked food, thoroughly cleansed and pure.
स्वागतं च तथा कृत्वा पाद्यार्थं सलिलं शुचि १९०.
Having welcomed them, one should offer pure water for washing the feet.
आसनं कल्पयित्वा तु आवाह्य तदनन्तरम्
After arranging seats, one should then invite them.
धूपं दीपं तथा वस्त्रं तिलोदकमथापि वा
Then, incense, a lamp, cloth, and water mixed with sesame should be offered.
भस्मना मण्डलं कार्यं पङ्क्ति दोषनिवारकम्
A circle should be made with ashes, to remove the faults of the line (of guests).
तत्र कार्यो न संकल्पः पितॄनुद्दिश्य सुन्दरि
There, no formal resolve is needed; one should address the ancestors, O beautiful one.
रक्षोघ्नमन्त्रपाठांश्च श्रावयीत विचक्षणः
The wise should recite mantras for warding off evil spirits.
उत्तरीयासनं दत्त्वा पिण्डप्रश्नं तु कारयेत्
After giving an upper garment and a seat, one should perform the piṇḍa inquiry.
पिण्डदानं प्रकुर्वीत पित्रादित्रितये तथा
One should offer piṇḍas to the three generations, beginning with the father.
ब्राह्मणस्य च हस्ते तु दद्यादक्षय्यमात्मवान्
And one should give, with self-control, into the hand of a brāhmaṇa, that which is inexhaustible.
पिण्डास्त्रयस्तु वसुधे यावत्तिष्ठन्ति भूतले
As long as the three balls of rice remain on the earth,
उपस्पृश्य शुचिर्भूत्वा दद्याच्छान्त्युदकानि च १९०.
Having purified himself by touching water and becoming clean, he should offer the waters of appeasement.
वैष्णवी काश्यपी चेति अक्षया चेति नामतः
The waters are known by the names Vaiṣṇavī, Kāśyapī, and Akṣayā.
तृतीयमुदके दद्याच्छ्राद्धे एवं विधिः स्मृतः
He should offer the third water at the śrāddha; thus is the rite declared.
एवं दत्तेन तुष्यन्ति पितृदेवा न संशयः
By such giving, the ancestors and the gods are satisfied—of this there is no doubt.
ज्ञानोत्तमेषु विप्रेषु दद्याच्छ्राद्धं विधानतः
One should offer the śrāddha according to rule to brāhmaṇas who are excellent in knowledge.
मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं यः श्राद्धं कुरुते द्विजः
If a twice-born performs śrāddha lacking in mantras or proper rites,
उद्धरेद्यदि पात्रं तु ब्राह्मणो ज्ञानवर्जितः
Or if a brāhmaṇa devoid of knowledge lifts the vessel,
एतत्ते कथितं भद्रे पितृकार्यमनुत्तमम्
Thus, O blessed one, I have described to you the unsurpassed rite for the ancestors.
अपरं चापि वसुधे किमन्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छसि
And now, O Earth, what else do you wish to hear?
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे श्राद्धपितृयज्ञनिश्चयो नाम नवत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and ninetieth chapter, entitled 'The Determination of the Śrāddha and Ancestor Rite,' in the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
अथ मधुपर्कोत्पत्तिदानसंकरणप्रकरणम् एवं श्रुत्वा बहून्धर्मान् धर्मशास्त्रविनिश्चयात्
Now, the section on the origin, offering, and mixing of madhuparka: Having thus heard many dharmas, ascertained from the treatises on dharma,
धरण्युवाच श्रुतं सुबहुशश्चैव तृप्तिर्मम न विद्यते
The Earth said: Though I have heard much and often, I am not yet satisfied.
ममैवानुग्रहार्थाय रहस्यं वक्तुमर्हसि
For my own benefit, you should speak the secret.
कानि द्रव्याणि कस्मै च देयानीति वदस्व मे
Tell me, what substances are to be given, and to whom?
