मम मायाबलेनैव कृतं श्राद्धं द्विजातिभिः
The śrāddha performed by twice-born men is accomplished solely by the power of my māyā.
नपुंसकाश्चित्रकारा वसुपालविनिन्दकाः
Eunuchs, painters, and those who revile the protectors of wealth,
नर्त्तका गायनाश्चैव तथा रङ्गोपजीविनः
Dancers, singers, and likewise those who make their living from the stage,
राजोपसेवकाश्चैव वाणिज्यक्रयविक्रयाः
Those who serve kings, as well as buyers and sellers in trade,
असंस्कारप्रवृत्ताश्च शूद्रकर्मोपजीविनः
Those who act without proper rites, and those who live by the work of śūdras,
दीक्षितः क्रोडपृष्ठश्च यश्च वार्धुषिको द्विजः
The initiated, the one who carries a pig on his back, and the twice-born who is a barber,
तस्करा लेखकाराश्च याजका रङ्गकारकाः १९०.
Thieves, scribes, priests-for-hire, and those who work on the stage,
सर्वकर्मकरा ये च सर्वविक्रयिणस्तथा
All laborers, and likewise all who sell various goods,
दूराध्वानं गता ये च तत्र कर्मोपजीविनः
Those who have traveled a long distance and those who make their living by such work,
श्राद्धकालमनुप्राप्तं राजसं तं विदुर्बुधाः
When the time for śrāddha arrives, the wise know this as rājasa (impure).
एतान्न पश्येच्छ्राद्धेषु पितृपिण्डेषु माधवि
O Mādhavi, one should not see these persons at śrāddha offerings to the ancestors.
पितरस्तस्य षण्मासं दुःखमृच्छन्ति दारुणम्
The ancestors of such a person experience terrible suffering for six months.
धृतं तु जुहुयादग्नावादित्यं चावलोकयेत्
One should offer what is held into the fire and look upon the sun.
गंधपुष्पं च धूपं च दद्यादर्घ्यं तिलोदकम्
One should give fragrance, flowers, incense, arghya, and water with sesame seeds.
पुनश्चान्यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणु तत्त्वेन सुन्दरि
Again, I will tell you something else; listen to the truth, O beautiful one.
मृतान्नं ये न भुञ्जंति कदाचिदपि माधवि
Those who never partake of food offered to the dead, O Mādhavi,
प्रेतान्नं भुञ्जमानास्तु श्राद्धमर्हन्ति ये द्विजाः १९०.
Twice-born men who partake of food meant for the dead are worthy to perform the śrāddha.
दम्भकार कृतोच्छिष्टं कृत्वा तु नरकं व्रजेत्
But one who, out of hypocrisy, leaves remnants after eating, surely goes to hell.
माघमासे तु द्वादश्यां सर्पिर्युक्तं तु पायसम्
In the month of Māgha, on the twelfth day, one should offer rice cooked with ghee.
सवत्सां कपिलां दद्यादात्मनः शुद्धिकामुकः
Desiring self-purification, one should give a tawny cow with her calf.
स्नानोपलेपनं भूमे कृत्वा विप्रान्प्रमन्त्रयेत्
After bathing and anointing the body with earth, one should invite the Brāhmaṇas with mantras.
यत्नेन मिथुनं श्राद्धे भोजयित्वा विसर्ज्जयेत्
With care, after feeding a married couple at the śrāddha, one should let them go.
अमायां तु च यो मूर्खो दन्तकाष्ठं हि खादति
But the fool who chews a tooth-stick on the new moon day—
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यामुदिते च दिवाकरे
When the night has passed and the sun has risen—
श्मश्रुकर्म च कर्त्तव्यं नखानां छेदनानि च
One should perform shaving and the cutting of nails.
पक्वान्नं तत्र वै कार्यं सुविमृष्टं च शुद्धितः
There, one should prepare well-cooked food, thoroughly cleansed and pure.
स्वागतं च तथा कृत्वा पाद्यार्थं सलिलं शुचि १९०.
Having welcomed them, one should offer pure water for washing the feet.
आसनं कल्पयित्वा तु आवाह्य तदनन्तरम्
After arranging seats, one should then invite them.
धूपं दीपं तथा वस्त्रं तिलोदकमथापि वा
Then, incense, a lamp, cloth, and water mixed with sesame should be offered.
भस्मना मण्डलं कार्यं पङ्क्ति दोषनिवारकम्
A circle should be made with ashes, to remove the faults of the line (of guests).
