दृष्टाः सोमेन सुश्रोणि देवताजीर्णपीडिताः
They were seen by Soma, O lovely-hipped one, suffering from the indigestion caused by the deities.
सोम उवाच एवं तु भाषमाणस्य सोमस्य तदनन्तरम्
Soma spoke: Thus, after Soma had spoken,
ऊचुस्ते सोममेवापि वाक्यं नः श्रूयतामिति
They said to Soma: Let our words be heard.
श्राद्धे नियोजितास्तैस्तु पितृपिण्डेन तर्पिताः
Those appointed at the śrāddha were satisfied by the ancestral offering.
सोम उवाच सहितास्तत्र गच्छामो यथा श्रेयो भविष्यति
Soma spoke: Together, let us go there, so that what is best may occur.
एवमुक्तास्तु सोमेन पितृदेवास्तदन्तरे
Thus addressed by Soma, the ancestral deities at that moment,
दृष्ट्वा पितामहं देवं प्रणम्य सहसा क्षितौ १९०.
Seeing the divine Pitamaha, they quickly bowed down to the earth.
य एते पितरो देव दुःखिताजीर्णपीडिताः
These ancestors, O god, afflicted by suffering and indigestion,
यथा नश्यंति जीर्णानि तथा कुरु पितामह
Just as things that are digested perish, so do likewise, O Pitamaha.
उवाच वचनं तत्र ब्रह्मा योगीश्वरं प्रति
There, Brahma spoke these words to the lord of yogis.
आगताः शरणं चात्र सोमेन सहिता मम
They have come here for refuge, together with Soma, to me.
ब्रह्मणा चैवमुक्तस्तु ईश्वरः परमेश्वरः
Thus addressed by Brahmā, the Supreme Lord, the Highest Lord,
पश्यते ईश्वरं तत्र योगवेदाङ्गनिर्मितम्
There, he beholds the Lord, fashioned from the limbs of Yoga and the Vedas.
निर्मिता विष्णुना ब्रह्मन् वैष्णव्या मायया च ते
Created by Viṣṇu, O Brahman, through his Vaiṣṇava Māyā, are they.
पिता तु ब्रह्मदैवत्यो मम गात्राद्विनिर्मितः
My father, the divine Brahmā, was fashioned from my own body.
प्रपितामहो रुद्रदेवो मम गात्राद्विनिर्मितः
My great-grandfather, Rudra Deva, was also fashioned from my own body.
ब्राह्मणानां हितार्थाय निर्मिता विष्णुमायया १९०.
For the welfare of the Brāhmaṇas, they were created by Viṣṇu's Māyā.
आगताः शरणं ब्रह्मन्सोमेन सहिता यदि
If, O Brahman, they have come for refuge together with Soma,
शृणु तत्ते प्रवक्ष्यामि ब्रह्मन्लोकपितामह
Listen, O Brahman, Grandfather of the worlds, I shall declare that to you.
श्राद्धे तु प्रथमं तस्य दातव्यं मानुषेषु वा
At a śrāddha, the first portion must be given to him, or among men.
ईश्वरेणेवमुक्तस्तु ब्रह्मा कमलसंभवः
Thus addressed by the Lord, Brahmā, born from the lotus, spoke.
प्रदीप्तस्तेजसा वह्निः सर्वभक्षो हुताशनः
The fire, blazing with radiance, the all-consuming eater of offerings,
ब्रह्माग्निं भाषते तत्र शृणुष्व च हुताशन
There, Brahmā addresses Agni: 'Listen, O eater of offerings,'
त्वया भुक्तेति भोक्ष्यन्ति देवताः समरुद्गणाः
When you have consumed it, the deities along with the Maruts will partake.
पश्चाद्दत्तं तु तं पिण्डं सह सोमेन भुञ्जते
Afterwards, that offered cake is eaten together with Soma.
प्रस्थिताः सह सोमेन देवतास्ता वसुन्धरे
The deities, together with Soma, then departed, O Earth.
एवं तु प्रथमं श्राद्धं दद्यादग्नेर्वसुन्धरे १९०.
Thus, O Earth, the first śrāddha should be given to Agni.
पश्चात्पिण्डान्प्रदद्याच्च दर्भानास्तीर्य भूतले
Afterwards, one should offer the cakes, having spread darbha grass on the ground.
पितामहाय रुद्रांशसंभूताय तु मध्यमम्
To the grandsire, and to the middle portion born from Rudra,
विधिना मन्त्रपूर्वेण श्राद्धं कुर्वन्ति ये नराः
Men perform the śrāddha rite with the prescribed mantras and procedure.
