Then, going to the Brahmins, even to his own house where he resides—
—to ants and other beings, and entirely to the share of the departed—
When all those have eaten, and the poor and helpless have been satisfied,
All the food he gives, O beautiful one, becomes inexhaustible for him.

I have explained this in detail, both directly and to Narada.

Having invoked the departed, being pure and composed—

—with offerings accompanied by mantras, for all the four orders—
When the rites for the departed are completed, and likewise when the year is full—
The paternal grandfather, daughter-in-law, wife, relatives, and kin—
Having wept for a moment himself, then he turns away.
Whose is the mother, whose is the father, whose is the wife, and whose are the sons?
The funeral rites for the dead should indeed be performed with affection.

Nārada said: You have established the law for all the four classes.
The ancestral offering is to be performed in the month after the funeral, and likewise on each day.
It is prescribed for Brāhmaṇas, and for Śūdras it is without mantras.
They constantly perform the śrāddha; this is called the naimiśrāddha.
Having spoken thus, the best of sages, Nārada, foremost among the twice-born—
In this way, the intention for the offering and the origin of the śrāddha, O Mādhavi—
Thus ends the one hundred and eighty-eighth chapter, named 'The Origin of the Śrāddha and the Piṇḍa Ritual,' in the divine scripture of the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa.
Now, the section on the origin of the piṇḍa ritual: The śrāddha has been heard as it was performed, along with all matters of purity and impurity.
