Afterwards, one should offer incense and a lamp, with the proper mantra.
Then, reciting the name and lineage, to the departed—
Mantra: Having left this world, you have gone to the highest state.
Fragrance-mantra: All fragrance, all flowers, incense, and likewise the lamp—
In this way, all garments and ornaments should be given to the Brahmin.
Thus, all such items, entirely, are to be offered as enjoyments for the departed.
For Shudras, the same is to be performed, but without mantras.
Having completed all this, one should feed the Brahmin with cooked food.
First, one should offer to the departed; no one else should touch it beforehand.
Divinity and Brahminhood are granted in the funeral offering.
It should be given in the place of the ancestors, accompanied by proper rites and mantras.
After cleansing the hands again and performing the prescribed purification,
A share for the departed should always be given from what the Brahmin is eating.
There, the share must be given for the sake of the one for whom the rite is performed.
Whoever obstructs what is given incurs the fruit of slaying a teacher.
Thus, righteousness is destroyed and the departed is not satisfied there.
But if someone gives the food for the departed among relatives and kin,
He stands as if false, and seeing, does not attain satisfaction.
But knowing the Brahmin's satisfaction with the cooked food, O Mādhavi,
Seeing that he has departed, one should not discard the leavings.
There, the leavings should be given, for a reason not to be censured.
Having become pure, and having performed the rites properly, the waters for peace should be offered with mantras; praise should be made with devotion as you stand.
Salutations, salutations to the earth, mother of the world, to the great mountain-bearing one.
Thus, by this offering of nivāpa, by your devotee, O beautiful one,
Going to the earth on the knees, having bowed to the best of Brahmins,
One should give a bed, O goddess, as well as ointment and bracelet.
Having rested there for a moment, he comes to the place of the nivāpa offering.
With a vessel made of udumbara wood, one should prepare water with black sesame seeds.
That water, purified by mantra, destroys all sins.
Afterwards, having thus dismissed the departed, one should give charity to a twice-born.
