Naming the deceased in this way, one should offer the funeral cake upon the earth.
Thus ends the one hundred and eighty-seventh chapter, entitled 'The Origin of Śrāddha,' in the divine scripture of the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa.
Now begins the section on the origin of the piṇḍa-rite of śrāddha: You are the god of gods, the lord of the worlds, unattached.
Śrī Varāha said: When the lifespan has ended, one should perform the third bath in the water of a river.

One should offer a ball of food, and also give thirty handfuls of water.

On the tenth day, garments should be purified with alkali and the like.
And on the eleventh day, the ekoddiṣṭa rite should be performed according to rule.
The ekoddiṣṭa is for people of the four varṇas, O Mādhavi.
Having bathed and become pure, one should join the departed with the ancestors.

By service to the fallen and to Śūdras, O beautiful one,

Reciting the name of the deceased, for whose sake the rite is performed,
Having gone to the invited Brāhmaṇa, humbly and with concentration,
You have gone to the heavenly world, as ordained by Death.
After the sun has set, one should go to the house of a Brāhmaṇa.

Taking the remains to a pure place, with concentration,
A share, properly made, should be sixty-four times as much as the good deed.
Even in the shade of an elephant, or at the riverside, or under a tree,
That land which is not seen by chickens, dogs, or pigs,
A chicken by the wind of its wings, and a caṇḍāla as upon the earth,
These are to be avoided by the wise in funeral rites, O beautiful one,
Serpents, spirits, sacrifices, and all that is movable and immovable,

Let them bathe, O Earth, on the ground immediately thereafter,
