क्रूरो भीरुर्विषादि च हिंसको निरपत्रपः
He is cruel, fearful, addicted to vice, violent, and shameless.
तामसं तद्विजानीयादुच्यमानो न बुद्ध्यति
Know that as tamasic; when spoken to, he does not understand.
प्रबलो वाचि युक्तश्चाचलबुद्धिः सदायतः
He is strong in speech, unsteady in mind, and always suspicious.
क्षान्तो दान्तो विशुद्धात्मा विज्ञेयः श्रद्धयान्वितः
He who is patient, self-controlled, pure in soul, and endowed with faith is to be known as such.
एवं सञ्चिन्तयानस्तु न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि
Thus reflecting, you should not give in to sorrow.
लज्जा धृतिश्च धर्मश्च श्रीः कीर्तिश्च स्मृतिर्नयः
Modesty, fortitude, righteousness, prosperity, fame, memory, and wisdom—
त्यजन्ति सर्वधर्मश्च शोकेनोपहतं नरम्
All these, along with every virtue, abandon a man afflicted by grief.
मूढ: स्नेहप्रभावेण कृत्वा हिंसानृते तथा
Deluded by the power of attachment, he commits violence and falsehood.
स्नेहं सर्वेषु संयम्य बुद्धिं धर्मे नियोजयेत्
Restraining attachment towards all, one should direct the mind towards righteousness.
चातुर्वर्णस्य वक्ष्यामि यश्च स्वायंभुवोऽब्रवीत् 187.
I shall declare the duties of the four varnas, as spoken by Svayambhu.
कुशास्तरणशायी च दिशः सर्वा न पश्यति
Lying on a bed of kusha grass, he does not look in any direction.
वाचयेत्स्नेहभावेन भूमिदेवा द्विजातयः
With affection, he should cause the twice-born, the earth-gods, to recite.
परलोकहितार्थाय गोप्रदानं विशिष्यते
For the sake of benefit in the next world, the gift of a cow is especially praised.
एतासां चैव दानेन शीघ्रं मुच्येत किल्बिषात्
By giving these gifts, one is quickly freed from sin.
पश्चाछ्रुतिपथं दिव्यमुत्कर्णेन च श्रावयेत्
Afterwards, let him make the divine sound heard in the right ear.
दृष्ट्वा सुविह्वलं ह्येनं मम मार्गानुसारिणम्
Seeing him greatly distressed, following my path,
मंत्रेणानेन कर्तव्यं सर्वसंसारमोक्षणम्
By this mantra, the release from all worldly existence should be performed.
मन्त्रः- ॐ गृह्णीष्व मे सुविमलं मधुपर्कमाद्यं संसारनाशनकरं त्वमृतेन तुल्यम्
Mantra: Om, accept from me this purest madhuparka, the foremost, which destroys worldly existence, equal to nectar.
तत एतेन मन्त्रेण दद्याद्वै मधुपर्ककम् 187.
Then, with this mantra, one should indeed offer the madhuparka.
एवं विनिस्सृते प्राणे संसारं च न गच्छति
Thus, when the life-breath has departed in this way, he does not return to worldly existence.
महावनस्पतिं गत्वा गन्धांश्च विविधानपि
Going to a great tree and gathering various kinds of fragrant substances,
तेजोऽव्ययकरं चास्य तत्सर्वं परिकल्प्य च
And arranging all those things that bestow unfailing brilliance for him,
तीर्थाद्यावाह्नं कृत्वा स्नापनं तस्य कारयेत्
After invoking the sacred waters and the like, one should have him bathed.
कुरुक्षेत्रं च गङ्गा च यमुना च सरिद्वरा
Kurukshetra, the Ganga, and the Yamuna, the best of rivers,
गण्डकी भद्रनामा च सरयूर्बलदा तथा
The Gandaki, the auspicious Bhadra, and the Sarayu, giver of strength,
| पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि चत्वारः सागरास्तथा
And all the sacred places on earth, as well as the four oceans,
तस्या उपरि संस्थाप्य दक्षिणाग्रं शिरस्तथा
Having placed her above him, with her southern tip at his head,
दिव्यानग्निमुखान्ध्यात्वा गृह्य हस्ते हुताशनम्
Meditating on the divine, fire-faced ones, and taking fire in hand,
कृत्वा सुदुष्करं कर्म जानता वाप्यजानता 187.
Whether knowingly or unknowingly performing a most difficult act,
धर्माधर्मसमायुक्तो लोभमोहसमावृतः
Joined with righteousness and unrighteousness, enveloped by greed and delusion,
