Varaha Purana

तथैव सर्वौषधयो जलानि वायुश्च पृथ्वी च स वायुसारथिः

Likewise, all medicinal herbs, waters, the wind, the earth, and the wind as charioteer—

अनेनैव तु मन्त्रेण कृत्वा कर्म सुपुष्कलम्

By performing the rite thoroughly with this very mantra,

एकान्ते स्नापयेन्मां च जलैः पूर्वाभिमन्त्रितैः

In seclusion, he should bathe me with the previously consecrated waters.

गात्रसंशोधनार्थाय इमं मन्त्रमुदाहरेत्

For the purification of the limbs, he should recite this mantra:

मन्त्रः – सरांसि ये ते च समस्तसागरा नद्यश्च तीर्थानि च पुष्कराणि

Mantra: All the lakes, all the oceans, the rivers, the sacred fords, and the holy ponds—

एवं मां स्नाप्य विधिना मम कर्मानुसारिणः 185.

Thus, bathing me according to the prescribed rite, in accordance with my injunctions—

गन्धधूपादिभिश्चैव यथाविभवशक्तितः

With sandalwood, incense, and the like, according to one's means and capacity—

तान्यानयित्वा वस्त्राणि ममाग्रे स्थापयेन्नरः

Having brought those garments, a person should place them before me.

मन्त्रः- वस्त्राणि देवेन्द्र मया हृतानि सूक्ष्माणि सौम्यानि सुखावहानि

Mantra: O Indra of the gods, these garments, subtle, gentle, and bringing comfort, have been taken by me.

वेदोपवेद ऋग्वेद यजुर्वेद सामवेद अथर्वणवेद संस्तुत इति नमः परम्परायेति पश्चान्मे प्रापणं दद्यान्मन्त्रवद्विधिपूर्वकम्

The Vedas and the auxiliary Vedas—Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda—are praised thus: 'Salutation to the lineage.' Afterwards, one should offer the prāpaṇa, accompanied by mantra and proper ritual.

दत्त्वा प्रापणकं तत्र दद्यादाचमनं ततः

Having given the prāpaṇaka there, one should then offer water for sipping.

विद्याः सर्वे ब्रह्म च ब्राह्मणाश्च ग्रहाः सर्वे सरितः सागराश्च

All knowledge, Brahman, Brahmins, all planets, all rivers, and all oceans—

आयाम यम कामदम वाम ॐ नमः पुरुषोत्तमायेति सूत्रम् अभिवादनं स्तुतिं चापि कृत्वा भागवतांश्छुचीन्

The thread: 'Length, restraint, desire-restraint, left, Om, salutation to Purushottama.' Having performed salutation and praise, one should honor the pure devotees.

सम्पूज्य ब्राह्मणान्पश्चाद्भोजयेत् पायसादिभिः

After worshipping the Brahmins, one should feed them with rice pudding and similar foods.

दद्यादभ्युक्षणं मह्यं तेनाहं पूजितोऽभवम्

One should offer sprinkling to me; by that, I am worshipped.

अङ्गुलीयकवासोभिर्दानसंमाननादिभिः 185.

With rings, garments, gifts, honors, and the like.

तेनाहं पूजितो देवि एवमेतन्न संशयः

By that, O goddess, I am worshipped; thus it is, without doubt.

नाशयिष्यामि तं देवि सत्यमतेद्ब्रवीमि ते

I will destroy him, O goddess; I speak this truth to you.

तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि मम लोकेषु तिष्ठति

He remains in my worlds for thousands of years.

तारितं च कुलं तेन पितृजं मातृजं तथा

By that, both his paternal and maternal lineage are liberated.

कथयिष्यामि ते ह्येवं रौप्येण स्थापनं मम

I will tell you now about my installation in silver.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे कांस्यप्रतिमास्थापनविधिर्नाम पंचाशीत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus, in the glorious Varaha Purana, the one hundred eighty-fifth chapter named 'The Procedure for Installing a Bronze Image' concludes.

श्रीवराह उवाच अश्लिष्टां चैव निर्दोषां सर्वतः परिनिष्ठिताम्

Śrī Varāha said: One that is tightly joined, flawless, and perfectly finished in every way.

चन्द्रपाण्डुरसङ्काशां सुश्लक्ष्णां निर्व्रणां शुभाम्

One that is bright as the moon, very smooth, without blemish, and auspicious.

ईदृशीं प्रतिमां कृत्वा मम कर्मपरायणः

Having made such an image, devoted to my rites—

स्तुतिभिर्मङ्गलैश्चैव मम वेश्मन्युपानयेत्

He should bring me into the house with auspicious praises and blessings.

मन्त्रः- ॐ यः सर्वलोकेष्वपि सर्वमर्घ्यं पूज्यश्च मान्यश्च दिवौकसामपि यो राजते यज्ञपतिश्च यज्ञे सूर्योदये मम कर्माग्निहोत्रम्

Mantra: Om. He who, in all worlds, is worthy of all offerings, worship, and honor—even among the gods; who shines as the lord of sacrifice at the sunrise; my ritual is the agnihotra.

मन्दश्चेति आदिमध्यस्वरूपायेति सुस्नातोऽलंकृतश्चैव स्थापयेत्तामुदड्मुखः

With the mantra 'manda', and 'to the one whose form is beginning, middle, and end', one who is well-bathed and adorned should place it facing east.

आश्लेषासु च नक्षत्रे राशौ कर्कटके स्थिते

When the nakshatra of embrace is present and the sign of Cancer is ascendant,
