Thus, in the glorious Varāha Purāṇa, in the divine scripture, is the one-hundred-and-eighty-first chapter named 'Description of Mathurā.'
Now, the establishment of worship for the image made of Madhuka wood; having heard thus, the earth, steadfast in her vow, attained the supreme place.
Having heard and filled with wonder, Vasundharā replied: 'Ah, the power of the field which you have described!'
Having heard this, through the essence of divinity, I have become free from affliction.
For my pleasure, O Viṣṇu, you ought to speak all of this.
How do you remain established in copper, bronze, and silver?
O Mādhava, how do you abide when approached by a celibate?
How do you remain, O Janārdana, on the left side, situated on a wall?
Hearing these words of the earth, the primordial boar replied: ‘O Vasundharā, when one must make an image, bring it here.’
O Vasundharā, one should indeed make the image according to the prescribed characteristics.
Then, O goddess, one should worship for liberation from worldly existence.
Having made that image, one should worship it according to the rite of installation.
Camphor, saffron, skin, and also aguru should be used.
With these, the wise person should offer anointment after worship.
He should also offer auspicious rice pudding, prepared according to the prescribed method.
Thus, afterwards, he should give all the auspicious items prescribed for worship.
Then, having performed prāṇāyāma, he should recite this mantra.
With reverence in the world, you stand firmly in wood, O you who are well established on earth.
Again, having circumambulated with pure devotees,
He should not look upward or sideways, remaining free from desire and anger.
He should perform their consecration with the action prescribed by the rite.
Mantra: ‘You, who are the foremost among all people, the refuge, the lord, you indeed dwell unfailing.’
Having thus performed all these, carry out the rite of my installation.
Worship with fragrant substances and flowers, with unguents and with food offerings.
By this procedure, O beautiful one, regarding the wood of the madhuka tree—
Whoever establishes the worship of the wooden image by this method—
Thus ends the one hundred and eighty-first chapter, entitled 'Establishing the Worship of the Madhuka Wood Image,' in the Divine Scripture of the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa.
Now, I will describe the installation of a stone image; listen to this, O Vasundharā.
Having found a well-formed stone, free from flaws and thoroughly examined—
A man should quickly inscribe upon it there, using a white marking stick.
