दृष्टो भवद्भिः सर्वं यदस्माकं सुदुरत्ययम्
All that is exceedingly difficult for us has been witnessed by you.
इति विश्राव्य वचनं राजानं स ऋषिं जनान्
Having thus proclaimed these words to the king, the sage, and the people,
आरुह्य वरयानं ते गताः स्वर्गं वृता सुरैः ततः स राजशार्दूलः सगणः परिवारकैः
they ascended the celestial vehicle and went to heaven, accompanied by the gods; then that tiger among kings, with his retinue and attendants,
दृष्ट्वा तीर्थस्य माहात्म्यं प्रणम्य ऋषिसत्तमम्
having seen the greatness of the sacred place, bowed to the foremost sage.
एतत्ते कथितं भद्रे माहात्म्यं मथुराभवम्
This, O blessed one, is the greatness of Mathurā that has been told to you.
पठति श्रद्धया युक्तो ब्राह्मणानां च सन्निधौ 180.
One who recites this with devotion in the presence of Brāhmaṇas,
एतत्त्वयानाव्रतिने न चाशुश्रूषये तथा
this should not be recited by you to those without vows, nor to those who do not listen properly.
तीर्थानां परमं तीर्थं धर्माणां धर्ममुत्तमम्
Among sacred places, it is the supreme; among dharmas, it is the highest dharma.
कथनीयं महाभागे पुण्यान्भागवतान्सदा एतच्छ्रुत्वा प्रभोर्वाक्यं धरणी विस्मयान्विता
It should always be narrated, O greatly fortunate one, to the pious devotees; hearing this word of the Lord, the earth was filled with wonder.
पप्रच्छ मुदिता देवी प्रतिमास्थापनं प्रति
The delighted goddess asked regarding the installation of the image.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे मथुरावर्णनं नामाशीत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Varāha Purāṇa, in the divine scripture, is the one-hundred-and-eighty-first chapter named 'Description of Mathurā.'
अथ मधुकाष्ठाप्रतिमायामर्चास्थापनम् एवं श्रुत्वा परं स्थानं सा मही संशितव्रता
Now, the establishment of worship for the image made of Madhuka wood; having heard thus, the earth, steadfast in her vow, attained the supreme place.
संश्रुत्य विस्मयाविष्टा प्रत्युवाच वसुन्धरा अहो क्षेत्रप्रभावो वै यस्त्वया समुदाहृतः
Having heard and filled with wonder, Vasundharā replied: 'Ah, the power of the field which you have described!'
यं श्रुत्वा देवतत्त्वेन जातास्मि विगतज्वरा
Having heard this, through the essence of divinity, I have become free from affliction.
मम प्रीत्यर्थमखिलं तद्विष्णो वक्तुमर्हसि
For my pleasure, O Viṣṇu, you ought to speak all of this.
ताम्रे कांस्ये च रौप्ये च तिष्ठसि स्थापितः कथम्
How do you remain established in copper, bronze, and silver?
ब्रह्मचारी समासाद्य कथं तिष्ठसि माधव
O Mādhava, how do you abide when approached by a celibate?
कथं तिष्ठसि वा सव्ये भित्तिसंस्थो जनार्दनः
How do you remain, O Janārdana, on the left side, situated on a wall?
एवं धरावचः श्रुत्वा प्रत्युवाचादिसूकरः प्रतिमा यस्य कर्त्तव्या तदानीय वसुन्धरे
Hearing these words of the earth, the primordial boar replied: ‘O Vasundharā, when one must make an image, bring it here.’
प्रतिमां कारयेच्चैव लक्षणोक्तां वसुन्धरे
O Vasundharā, one should indeed make the image according to the prescribed characteristics.
ततः सम्पूजयेद्देवि संसारभवमुक्तये 181.
Then, O goddess, one should worship for liberation from worldly existence.
कृत्वा तत्प्रतिमां चैव प्रतिष्ठाविधिनार्च्चयेत्
Having made that image, one should worship it according to the rite of installation.
कर्पूरं कुंकुमं चैव त्वचं चागुरुमेव च
Camphor, saffron, skin, and also aguru should be used.
एतैर्विलेपनं दद्यादर्चितस्तु विचक्षणः
With these, the wise person should offer anointment after worship.
विधानपूर्वकं चैव मंगल्यं चैव पायसम्
He should also offer auspicious rice pudding, prepared according to the prescribed method.
एवं सर्वं ततो दद्यात्पूजायां विहितं शुभम्
Thus, afterwards, he should give all the auspicious items prescribed for worship.
प्राणायामं ततः कृत्वा इमं मन्त्रमुदीरयेत्
Then, having performed prāṇāyāma, he should recite this mantra.
ससम्भ्रमं लोके सुप्रतीतस्तिष्ठ काष्ठे स त्वं भुवि
With reverence in the world, you stand firmly in wood, O you who are well established on earth.
पुनः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य शुद्धैर्भागवतैः सह
Again, having circumambulated with pure devotees,
नोर्द्ध्वं न तिर्यगीक्षेत कामक्रोधविवर्जितः
He should not look upward or sideways, remaining free from desire and anger.
