द्विजानां प्रीणनं कृत्वा स्वधान्नपटुभोजनैः
Having satisfied the twice-born with excellent meals of one's own food,
हर्षस्तु सुमहाञ्जातो रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः
Great joy arises for Rāma, whose actions are untainted.
महोत्सवं च कर्तुं स शत्रुघ्नस्य महात्मनः
And a great festival is to be held for the noble Śatrughna.
एकादश्यां सोपवासः स्नात्वा विश्रान्तिसंज्ञके
On the eleventh day, with fasting, after bathing at the place called Viśrānti,
तस्मिन्मुक्त्वा यथाकामं ब्राह्मणान्वै प्रतर्प्य च
There, having gratified the brāhmaṇas as desired,
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः पितृभिः सह मोदते
Freed from all sins, he rejoices together with his ancestors.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे मथुरामाहात्म्ये शत्रुघ्नलावणे रामतीर्थयात्रायामष्टसप्तत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred seventy-eighth chapter, entitled 'The Pilgrimage to Rāmatīrtha in the Section on the Greatness of Mathurā and the Slaying of Lavaṇa by Śatrughna,' in the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
धरण्युवाच विनापराधो मनुजः सापराधश्च जायते
Earth said: A man is born both without fault and with fault.
कर्मणाचरणेनैव करणेन जुगुप्सितः
He becomes blameworthy only through the performance of actions.
श्रीवराह उवाच भक्षणं दन्तकाष्ठस्य राजान्नस्य तु भोजनम्
Śrī Varāha said: Eating with a tooth-stick, eating the king's food,
मैथुनं शवसंस्पर्शं पुरीषोत्सर्गमेव च
Sexual union, touching a corpse, and the act of defecation,
अभाष्य भाषणं चैव पिण्याकस्य च भक्षणम्
Speaking without being addressed, and eating oil-cake,
गुरोश्चालीकनिर्बन्धः पतितान्नस्य भक्षणम्
The insistence on a teacher’s food, and eating food that has fallen.
अदानं तुवरान्नस्य जालपादवराकयोः
Not giving green or uncooked food to the poor or those caught in a net.
तथैव देव पूजायां निषिद्धकुसुमार्च्चनम्
Likewise, in the worship of the gods, offering forbidden flowers.
पानं सुराया देवस्य अन्धकारे प्रबोधनम्
Drinking liquor for the deity, or awakening in darkness.
अपराधास्त्रयस्त्रिंशत्समाख्याता मया धरे 179.
O Earth, I have thus described thirty-three offenses.
दूरस्थो न नमस्कारं कुर्यात्पूजा तु राक्षसी सवासाः पंचगव्याशी मलसंवस्त्रकं क्रमात् प्राजापत्येन शुद्धिः स्यान्नीलीवस्त्रस्य धारणात्
If one, being far away, does not offer salutations, the worship becomes demonic; wearing clothes, consuming five products of the cow, and wearing soiled garments in succession—purification is by the prājāpatya rite, or by wearing blue garments.
चान्द्रायणद्वयं कुर्याद्गुरोः क्षयितमुत्तमम्
One should perform two cāndrāyaṇa penances for the gravest offense against the teacher.
चान्द्रायणं पराकं च प्राजापत्यं तथैव च
Cāndrāyaṇa, parāka, and likewise prājāpatya penances.
उपवासस्तु पंचाहं पंचगव्येन शुद्ध्यति
Fasting for five days, and purification by taking the five products of the cow.
पुष्पाभावेऽर्च्चनं स्नानं देवस्पर्शं च कारयन्
When there are no flowers, one should perform worship, bathing, and touching the deity.
सुरापाने द्विजातीनां चान्द्रायणचतुष्टयम्
For drinking liquor, four cāndrāyaṇa penances are prescribed for twice-born men.
ब्रह्मकूर्च्चेन शुद्धिः स्याद्गोप्रदानत्रयेण च
Purification is achieved by the brahmakūrcca rite or by giving three cows.
मुच्यते त्वपराधैस्तु तथा विष्णोः स्तवं पठन्
One is freed from offenses also by reciting a hymn to Viṣṇu.
पुनः पुनरुवाचेदं देवदेवो जनार्दनः 179.
Again and again, the god of gods, Janārdana, spoke this.
मुहुर्त्तमात्रे सा देवी संज्ञां प्राप्येदमब्रवीत्
That goddess, regaining consciousness for a moment, spoke this.
प्रायश्चित्तानि भूरीणि कृतानि तु नरैः सदा
Many acts of atonement have always been performed by people.
अस्ति कश्चिदुपायोऽत्र येन त्वं नृषु तुष्यसि
Is there any means here by which you are pleased with people?
श्रीवराह उवाच कृतोपवासः स्नानेन गंगायां शुद्धिमाप्नुयात्
Śrī Varāha said: One who has fasted and bathed in the Gaṅgā attains purification.
