Varaha Purana

सांबस्तत्रैव संतस्थौ वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिः

Sāmba remained there, trembling, with hands joined in salutation.

कृष्णस्तु कथयामास नारदाय सविस्तरम्

But Kṛṣṇa began to relate the matter in detail to Nārada.

क्षणो नास्ति रहो नास्ति नास्ति कृत्ये विभावना

There is no moment, no privacy, and no concealment in action.

एकवासास्तथा गौरी श्यामा वा वरवर्णिनी 177.

Some wore a single garment, some were fair, some dark, all of excellent complexion.

सुरूपं पुरुषं दृष्ट्वा क्षरन्ति मुनिसत्तम

Upon seeing a handsome man, O best of sages, they are moved.

अतीव मानी तेजस्वी धार्मिकोऽतिगुणान्वितः

He is exceedingly proud, radiant, righteous, and endowed with great virtues.

नारदस्त्वेवमेवं च प्रतिपूज्य हरेर्वचः

And Nārada, having thus honored the words of Hari—

यथा एकेन चक्रेण रथस्य न गतिर्भवेत्

Just as a chariot cannot move with only one wheel,

पुंसः सुदृष्टिपातेन कृतकृत्या भवन्ति ताः

So, by the mere glance of a man with clear vision, they become fulfilled in their purpose.

सांबं दृष्ट्वैव ताः सर्वा अनङ्गेन प्रपीडिताः

Upon seeing Sāmba, all those women were afflicted by desire without physical contact.

तस्मात्सांबस्तु दुष्टात्मा तव स्त्रीणां विनाशकृत्

Therefore, Sāmba, with a wicked mind, has become the destroyer of your women.

मया श्रुतस्तु लोकेभ्यो ब्रह्मर्षिभ्यो मुहुर्मुहुः

I have heard this repeatedly from the worlds and from the Brahmarṣis.

त्वमिहार्हस्यमेयात्मन्मया नु कथितं हितम्

You, who are worthy here, have heard from me what is beneficial to you, O one whose nature is known to me.

कृष्णः शशाप सांबं तु विरूपत्वं भविष्यति 177.

Kṛṣṇa cursed Sāmba, saying, 'You shall become deformed.'

शरीरात्तु गलद्रक्तं पूतिगन्धयुतं सदा

From his body blood would always ooze, accompanied by a foul smell.

ततस्तु नारदेनैव साम्बशापविनाशकः

Then, by Nārada alone, the destruction of Sāmba’s curse was accomplished.

सांब सांब महाबाहो शृणु जांबवतीसुत

O Sāmba, O mighty-armed one, listen, son of Jāmbavatī.

नमस्कुरु यथान्यायं वेदोपनिषदादिभिः

Offer proper salutations according to the Vedas, Upaniṣads, and other scriptures.

सांब उवाच तस्य देवः कथं तुष्टो भविष्यति स वै मुने

Sāmba said: O sage, how will that god be pleased with me?

नारद उवाच ब्रह्मलोके पठिष्यामि ब्रह्मणोऽग्रे त्वहं सदा

Nārada said: I will always recite this in Brahmaloka before Brahmā.

सुमन्तुर्मर्त्त्यलोके च मनोः प्रकथयिष्यति कथं पूर्वाचले गत्वा मांसपिण्डोपमः प्रभो

And Sumantu will proclaim it among mortals, O lord, how, having gone to the eastern mountain, he became like a lump of flesh.

त्वत्प्रसादान्महद्दुःखं प्राप्तस्त्वहमकल्मषः यथोदयाचले देवमाराध्य लभते फलम्

By your grace, though I am sinless, I have suffered great distress; just as by worshipping the god at the eastern mountain, one attains the fruit.

मथुरायां तथा गत्वा षट्सूर्ये लभते फलम्

Likewise, by going to Mathurā, at the six Suns, one attains the fruit.

मथुरायां च मध्याह्ने मध्यन्दिन रवौ तथा 177.

And in Mathurā, at midday, at the midday Sun as well.

मथुरायां तथा पुण्यमुदयास्तं रवेर्जपन्

And in Mathurā, reciting at sunrise and sunset of the Sun, one attains merit.

कृष्णगङ्गोद्भवे स्नात्वा सूर्यमाराध्य यत्नतः

After bathing in the Krishna-Ganga, one should worship the Sun with diligence.

श्रीवराह उवाच मथुरां मुक्तिफलदां रवेराराधनोत्सुकः

Śrī Varāha said: Mathurā, which grants the fruit of liberation, inspires eagerness for worship of the Sun.

नारदोक्तेन विधिना सांबो जांबवतीसुतः

Following the procedure spoken by Nārada, Sāmba, son of Jāmbavatī,

कृत्वा योगेन चात्मानं सांबस्याग्रे रविस्तदा

Having composed his mind through yoga, Sāmba stood before the Sun at that time.
