She wept aloud in distress, recalling her former noble family.
Hearing her lament, the womenfolk gathered there.
By various means, they revived that man.
Then, he recounted the entire story and the great lineage.
Afterwards, he became dejected because of the forbidden union.
If a Brahmin is born as a murderer of Brahmins or a drinker of liquor,
Mother, teacher’s wife, sister, daughter, and daughter-in-law,
A killer of a Brahmin, a drinker of liquor, a slayer of a woman, and one who approaches his teacher’s bed,
Having heard thus, Panchali regarded only her eldest brother,
Jewels, garments, wealth, grain—whatever was present there,
For adorning Kalinjar, and especially for the purpose of gardens,
And for the purification of herself, she kindled the sacrificial fire,
The Panchala, too, with proper procedure, bowed to the sage, his teacher.
He performed the rites suitable for death at that place,
He purchased villages there and gave them to the Brahmins at that time,
He also distributed wealth among them, dividing it for the purpose of the sacrificial session,
Having bathed at Krishna’s sacred site, seeing the deity and bowing,
He built a temple there, instructing the merchants,
O deity, your divine knowledge is wondrous and hair-raising,
I have come, beginning from that time in Mathura, O teacher,
By your pure gaze, O sage, I was once beheld,
By the power of Krishna and the Ganga, I have again attained purity,
That truth has arisen in me—the sin of forbidden approach is gone.
Grant me permission, O lord; I bow to your feet.
As he was about to enter the fire there, a bodiless voice spoke in the sky.
Why, and out of fear of whom, do you, resolved upon death, act thus?
That place, marked by the discus-bearing foot, is as auspicious and exalted as Brahma's own realm.
Any sin committed at that holy site will become as hard as diamond to remove.
By bathing there even once, a person is freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin.
There is nothing equal to bathing at the five sacred fords here—of this there is no doubt.
