ब्राह्मणाय च दत्ता सा धनधान्यसमन्विता
There, a maiden endowed with wealth and grain was given to the brāhmaṇa.
कन्याऽस्थीनि तु संगृह्य मथुरामाजगाम ह
But gathering the girl's bones, he went to Mathurā.
नित्यं स्वर्गे वसति स यस्यास्थि ह्यर्द्धचन्द्रके
He in whose bones there is a crescent shape dwells always in heaven.
तेन सार्थेन सा कन्या मथुरायां जगाम च
With that caravan, that maiden went to Mathurā.
सुरूपा सुकुमाराङ्गी नीलकुंचितमूर्द्धजा
She was beautiful, with delicate limbs and dark, curly hair.
सुश्लिष्टाङ्गुलिपादा तु नखास्ताम्रोज्ज्वलाः शुभाः
Her fingers and toes were well-formed, her nails bright and coppery, auspicious.
क्षामोदरी समकुक्षिः पीनोन्नतपयोधरा 175.
She had a slender waist, even belly, and full, high breasts.
सुनखी स्वक्षिणी सुभ्रूः सुप्रमाणा सुभाषिणी
Her nails were fine, her eyes lovely, her brows beautiful, her form proportionate, and her speech pleasing.
यं यं पश्यति चार्वङ्गी यस्तां चैव प्रपश्यति
Whoever that charming-limbed maiden looked upon, and whoever looked upon her,
एवंविधा तत्र तत्र तीर्थस्नानपरायणा
Such as she, devoted everywhere to bathing at holy places,
कान्यकुब्जाधिपो राजा क्षत्रधर्मे व्यवस्थितः
The king of Kānyakubja, established in the duty of a kṣatriya,
प्रवर्त्तते सुवित्ताढ्य प्रेक्षणीयं मनोरमम्
Engaged in great wealth, delightful to behold, and charming,
तस्य देवस्य या वेश्यास्ताभिः सा प्रतिलोभिता
The courtesans of that lord, she was enticed by them.
गीतनृत्यादिषु रता तासां धर्ममुपागता
Fond of singing and dancing, she followed their way of life.
एवं वसति सा बाला देवस्यास्य परिग्रहा
Thus that young girl lived among the attendants of that lord.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे मथुरामाहात्म्ये कृष्णगंगाकालिञ्जरप्रभावे पंचसप्तत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred seventy-fifth chapter, on the greatness of Mathurā and the power of Kṛṣṇa-Gaṅgā and Kāliñjara, in the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
श्रीवराह उवाच वाणिज्यभाण्डमादाय समूहस्य प्रसंगतः
Śrī Varāha said: Taking the merchant's goods, in the company of the group,
सार्थेन निष्ठितः सोऽथ धनवान्रूपवांस्ततः
He, settled with the caravan, was then wealthy and handsome.
आक्रम्य तत्र सम्प्राप्ता यत्र सा मथुरा पुरी
Arriving there, they reached the city of Mathurā.
तस्मिन्स्थाने स पांचालः प्रातस्तु पुरुषैः सह ऐश्वर्यमदभावेन यानेन महता तदा
In that place, the Pāñcāla, early in the morning, with his men, with great pride and in a grand vehicle, then—
देवतादर्शनं कृत्वा दत्त्वा दानान्यनेकशः
After beholding the deity, he gave many gifts repeatedly.
कौतुकार्थं ततो गत्वा देवं गर्त्तेश्वरं तदा
Then, out of curiosity, he went to the deity named Gartteshvara.
धात्रेयिकायास्तस्याश्च बहुमानपुरःसरम्
With great respect, he also approached the woman named Dhātreyikā.
हारा रत्नमयास्तद्वद्ददौ लोभविमोहितः
Overcome by greed and delusion, he gave her necklaces made of jewels in the same manner.
स्नात्वा तीर्थे समीपे च कृष्णगङ्गोद्भवे सदा 176.
He always bathed at the holy place near the source of the Krishna and Ganga rivers.
एवं तु कुर्वतस्तस्य मासषट्कं ततो गतम्
In this way, as he continued, six months passed.
स्वाश्रमस्थेन दृष्टः स कृमियुक्तः समागतः
He was seen by someone residing in his own hermitage, covered with worms and having arrived there.
यावत्स्नानं स कुरुते पतते राशिमात्रकः
Whenever he bathed, a heap of worms would fall off.
एवं सुमन्तुना दृष्टमाश्चर्यं बहुवासरम्
Thus, Sumantu witnessed this astonishing event for many days.
इति चिन्तासमायुक्तस्तमपृच्छद्विशंकितः
Filled with anxious thoughts, he questioned him with suspicion.
