Varaha Purana

दृष्टं च विष्ण्वायतनं तेजसा चोपशोभितम्

He saw the abode of Vishnu, shining with radiance.

वत्साऽयं कोऽत्र संचारी कदा किं तु पिता मम

'Who is this calf wandering here? When, and why? Yet, he is my father.'

क्षणमेकं तथा चैनं तस्य चिन्तान्वितस्य हि

For a moment, as he was thus absorbed in thought about him,

नमो नारायणायोक्त्वा निषसाद वरासने असंख्याताः समायाता यथा देवी तथैव ताः

Saying 'Salutations to Narayana,' he sat down on an excellent seat; countless goddesses arrived there, just as she did.

गीतं वाद्यं च नृत्यं च यथासौख्यं विहृत्य च

There was singing, instrumental music, and dancing, and they enjoyed themselves as they pleased.

देवतादक्षिणे भागे पक्षिणां च जटायुषाम्

On the right side of the goddess were the deities and the vulture birds.

शुको लेख्यसमस्तेषां मध्ये कृत्वा तु संविदम्

The parrot, having made his intention known, was placed in the midst of them all.

ते समाश्वास्य तं प्राहुः कथमस्मिन्भवान्गतः 171.

They comforted him and asked, 'How did you come here?''

शुकस्तान्प्रत्युवाचाथ पिता मे पोतसंस्थितः

Then the parrot replied to them, 'My father is on the raft.'

तस्य त्राणमभीप्सन्वै ह्यागतोऽत्र वरं गिरिम्

Desiring his protection, I have come here to this excellent mountain.

पक्षिण ऊचुः पोताभ्याशगतिं यासि पितुस्तव गतिं प्रति

The birds said, 'You go near the raft, following your father's path.'

ममैव पादविन्यासे क्रमयिष्ये यथा जलम्

'I will step in the water just as you place your feet.'

मम चंच्वावगाहेन नङ्क्ष्यन्ति जलजन्तवः

'By plunging my beak in, the aquatic creatures will perish.'

तारयामास वेगेन गत्वा पृष्ठं जटायुषः

He quickly carried him across and reached the back of Jatayu.

हृत्कण्ठं चैव गम्भीरं सुखेन सुकृती यथा

With a deep voice from his heart and throat, he spoke gently, as a virtuous one should.

सरोवरं च पद्माढ्यं मणिरत्नविभूषितम्

A lake filled with lotuses, adorned with jewels and precious stones.

पुष्पाण्यादाय देवं च पूजयित्वा स केशवम् दृष्ट्वा निलिल्ये चैकान्ते शुकस्यानुमते स्थितः

Having gathered flowers and worshipped the god Keśava, he, upon seeing him, withdrew and hid in a secluded place, remaining there with the consent of the parrot.

क्षणेन ता यथापूर्वं देवताश्चागताः पुनः 171.

In a moment, those deities returned again just as before.

स्वागतस्य क्षुधार्त्तस्य ब्रह्मिष्ठस्य महात्मनः

For the welcome of Gokarṇa, who was tormented by hunger, steadfast in Brahman, and of great soul—

गोकर्णस्य प्रयच्छध्वं येन तृप्तिस्त्रिमासिकी

Give to Gokarṇa that by which he will be satisfied for three months.

तथा कृत्वा तमूचुस्ता अभयं तेऽस्तु मा शुचः

Having done so, they said to him, 'May you be free from fear; do not grieve.'

गतास्ताः पुनरेवं च नित्यमेव दिने दिने

Those goddesses departed, and in this way, they came again every single day.

पोतात्तस्मादुत्ततार सुवातेनोपवाहितः

Then the boat rose up, carried along by a favorable wind.

रत्नानि बहु मौल्यानि आहृतानि बहून्यथ

Many jewels of great value were brought, and many other things as well.

निरीक्ष्यतेऽस्य संवासो न दृष्टश्चुक्रुशुस्ततः

His presence was sought, but not seen; then they cried out.

व्रीडायुतो निमग्नोऽयं निश्चितं मकरालये

Overcome by shame, he has surely sunk down into the abode of the makaras.

यथाभागं च रत्नानां भागं दास्यामहे परम्

We shall give each his proper share of the jewels, the highest portion.

एवं वसन्स गोकर्णो द्वीपस्थः शोकविह्वलः 171.

Thus, Gokarṇa, dwelling on the island, was overwhelmed with sorrow.

शुकेन मन्त्रमूढत्वात्पितुरेवं निवेदितम्

Because of confusion regarding the mantra, the parrot reported this to his father.
