There I shall tell a wondrous thing, pleasing to the mind and ears.
On the twelfth and fourteenth days, those who are faithful and self-controlled—
At that time, O Devi, I arrived in Mathura.
There, I established four kinds of golden images.
Whoever beholds these images—firm, beautiful, with lovely brows—he is liberated.
The third is of Vamana, and the fourth is of Raghava.
By him, the earth, bounded by the four oceans, was surely traversed.
Among all the sacred places there, Asikunda is the greatest.
Beginning from Asikunda, O excellent one, the sequence of holy sites is recounted.
Whoever beholds those images there becomes fit for union with Brahman.
Thus ends the one hundred sixty-sixth chapter, named 'The Glory of Asikunda,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.
Sri Varaha said: Formerly, a Rakshasa spoke to a great-souled Brahmin.
The Earth said: For what reason did the Brahmin ask? Tell me everything, Lord.
Sri Varaha said: He does not worship the gods, nor does he honor the virtuous.
Even upon reaching a holy place, he does not perform bathing.
At both twilights and while lying down, that deluded one always remains so.
Always delighting in sinful conduct, associating with evil, his mind is most wicked.
Of all duties, householdership has been declared the best by the Self-born.
Just as all creatures live depending on their mother,
So that most wicked man, committing theft, joins with sins.
While fleeing, he then fell into a deep, dark pit.
Having fallen into the pit, he, appearing terrifying, remained there.
Among them, one Brahmin protected the earth by means of a charm.
Then a demon came there and spoke to the Brahmin: 'O Brahmin, I shall give you whatever is in your mind.'
'Food, long awaited, and as much as you desire.'
'By which I may devour the caravan until I am satisfied.'
'I have come alone for the caravan; I will not let it go under any circumstance.'
'You are not able to look at me, for by the power of my mantra, if my food is killed, O Brahmin, the fault will be yours.'
'Have compassion, O best of Brahmins, let food be given to me.'
'By what fault of action have you attained the state of a demon?'
