There exists a supreme and divine field named Mucukunda.
There, by bathing in the pond, a person attains the desired water.
The sin committed in this birth, and that which was committed in other births—
What need is there for many mantras for one whose devotion is to Janardana?
Having performed circumambulation, O Devi, whoever rests—
Upon seeing Hari awakened in Mathura, O Earth—
On the ninth day of the month of Kumuda, O Earth—
A slayer of a Brahmin, a drinker of liquor, a killer of a cow, and one who has broken vows—
On the eighth day, having reached Mathura and after brushing the teeth—
Wearing washed garments, having bathed well, devoted to the vow of silence—
If another person touches one who is performing circumambulation—
Having gone to Mathura and seen the self-born deity—
In front of the deity, O Earth, there is a well with pure water.
It is called Catuḥsāmudrika, renowned in the three worlds.
There, when one gives up the breath, he attains my world.
Thus ends the one hundred and fifty-eighth chapter, named 'The Glory of the Mathura Tirtha,' in the Mathura Mahatmya of the glorious Varaha Purana.
Now, the circumambulation of Mathurā and related rites have been heard many times, O Lord, along with the extensive virtues of the sacred places.
Such a result cannot be attained by gifts, austerities, or sacrifices.
O Hari, the journey to the holy places across the four ends of the earth—
Is there any means here by which it may be fully accomplished?
Śrī Varāha said: By circumambulating according to the prescribed path, measuring the auspicious distance—
The proper measure of yojanas is to be observed in the circumambulation of the earth.
These sacred places, the gods, and the stars in the sky—
By Brahmā, Lomaśa, Nārada, and Dhruva—
By these many gods, the earth with its oceans and forests—
And by the wandering of the great-souled Sugrīva in between—
And also by some who have attained yogic perfection, such as Mārkaṇḍeya and others—
And by beings of little strength and intelligence, endowed with little vitality—
Whatever fruit arises from journeying to the holy places in the seven continents—
Whoever, having reached Mathurā, performs circumambulation—
