There, through bathing and giving, one obtains the desired result.
Thus ends the one hundred and fifty-seventh chapter, named 'Praise of Bathing and Other Acts at Malayarjuna and Other Sacred Places,' in the glorious Varaha Purana, concerning the greatness of Mathura.
Now, the manifestation of the Mathura sacred places: My region of Mathura extends for twenty yojanas.
In the rainy season, one should stay at that place which brings joy.
In the seven continents, there are sacred places and holy abodes.
Seeing me, awakened from sleep, on the earth in Mathura,
O Earth, seeing my lotus-like face awakened from sleep,
All the inhabitants of Mathura are recipients of liberation.
Having bathed again in the Kalindi, one is honored in my world.
By whomsoever Kesava is circumambulated in Mathura,
With a vessel filled with ghee and with complete garments,
Five yojanas in breadth and five in length,
That place is abundant in all desired enjoyments and attended by groups of apsaras,
One ascends there daily, adorned with a circle of radiance,
O Devi, they always long for that; merit exists from what is done on earth,
O Devi, in the house of the virtuous, a human is born there; the deity protects the field, and this destroys sin,
From beings such as animals, ghosts, demons, and obstructive spirits,
Śrī Varāha said: They do not disturb, seeing those who are devoted to me,
For protection, I have appointed the guardians of the directions, O beautiful-faced one,
Indra protects the east, and Yama protects the south,
Kubera, of great strength and valor, protects the north,
Whoever builds a house or palace in Mathurā,
In Mathurā, O greatly fortunate one, and at the pond with pure water,
There, whoever gives up their life after bathing, O Earth,
There itself, always wondrous, hear what I am telling you,
In winter it becomes warm, and in summer it becomes cool,
It does not increase in the rainy season, nor does it decrease in the summer,
At every step, O Earth, the fruit of pilgrimage is found in Mathurā,
During the rainy season, one should bathe diligently at the prominent holy sites.
And also at the sacred currents and confluences of rivers.
