तत सा पीवरी प्राह किमेवं भाषसे नृप
Then that Pivari said, 'Why do you speak thus, O king?'
मत्तः सुप्तः प्रमत्तश्च असम्बद्धं प्रभाषते
Intoxicated, asleep, or careless, he speaks incoherently.
पीवर्युवाच प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्याम्यहं देव गोपयिष्यसि मे यदि ।। 153.
Pivari said: 'I will give up my life, O lord, if you do not protect me.'
प्रियाया वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रत्युवाच नराधिपः
Hearing his beloved's words, the king replied.
तत्र गत्वा यथातत्त्वं वदिष्यामि शुभानने
There, having gone, I shall speak the truth as it is, O auspicious-faced one.
पुत्रान्संस्थाप्य दौहित्रान्स्वे स्थाने शुभान्प्रिये
Having established the sons and grandsons in their proper places, O beloved and auspicious one,
ततः सम्मानयामास जनं पुरनिवासिनम्
Then he honored the people who dwelled in the city.
राज्ये पुत्रान्नियोक्ष्यामि यदि वो रोचतेऽनघाः
I will appoint my sons to the kingdom, if it pleases you, O sinless ones.
नित्यमिच्छन्ति वै लोको यमस्येच्छन्ति नान्यथा
People always desire Yama’s wish; they do not wish otherwise.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन गच्छावो मथुरां पुरीम्
Therefore, with all effort, let us go to the city of Mathurā.
इदानीं तु मया ज्ञातं त्यागान्नास्ति परं सुखम्
Now I have come to know that there is no happiness greater than renunciation.
नास्ति रागसमं दुःखं नास्ति त्यागात्परं सुखम्
There is no suffering equal to attachment, and no happiness greater than renunciation.
प्रायेण सर्वकामानां परित्यागो विशिष्यते 153.
Generally, the abandonment of all desires is considered superior.
ततः पौरजनं दृष्ट्वा चतुरङ्गबलान्वितः
Then, seeing the citizens, accompanied by a fourfold army,
तेन दृष्टा पुरी रम्या वासवस्य पुरी यथा
By him, the beautiful city was seen, like the city of Indra.
रम्यं मधुवनं नाम विष्णुस्थानमनुत्तमम्
There is the delightful Madhuvana, the supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
एकादशी शुक्लपक्षे मासि भाद्रपदे तथा
On the eleventh day of the bright fortnight, in the month of Bhādrapada,
वनं कुन्दवनं नाम तृतीयं चैवमुत्तमम्
There is the forest called Kundavana, the third and most excellent.
एकादशी कृष्णपक्षे मासि भाद्रपदे हि वा
Or on the eleventh day of the dark fortnight, in the month of Bhādrapada,
चतुर्थं काम्यकवनं वनानां वनमुत्तमम्
The fourth is Kāmyakavana, the best among forests.
विमलस्य च कुण्डे तु सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
At the pure pond, one is freed from all sins.
पंचमं बकुलं नाम वनानामुत्तमं वनम्
The fifth is Bakula, the foremost among forests.
यमुनायाः परे पारे देवानामपि दुर्ल्लभम् 153.
On the farthest shore of the Yamunā, a place difficult even for the gods to attain,
तत्र गत्वा तु वसुधे मद्भक्तो मत्परायणः
There, O Earth, my devotee who is wholly devoted to me, having gone,
सप्तमं तु वनं भूमे खादिरं लोकविश्रुतम्
The seventh forest, renowned among people, is the Khādira forest, O Earth.
महावनं चाष्टमं तु सदैव तु मम प्रियम्
And the eighth is the great forest, which is always especially dear to me.
लोहजङ्घवनं नाम लोहजङ्घेन रक्षितम्
The forest named Lohajaṅgha, protected by Lohajaṅgha,
वनं बिल्ववनं नाम दशमं देवपूजितम्
The tenth forest is called Bilva forest, worshipped by the gods.
एकादशं तु भाण्डीरं योगिनः प्रियमुत्तमम्
The eleventh is Bhāṇḍīra, most excellent and beloved of yogis.
भाण्डीरं तमनुप्राप्य वनानां वनमुत्तमम्
Having reached Bhāṇḍīra, the foremost of all forests,
